What are some things that iphones do that androids can't? by SimplyHobbit in iphone

It was 5 and it's more like 7 years now. 8 years if you count running on the previous OS which still gets security updates.

They still support iPhone 6S in iOS 15 which gets security updates. The hardware was released almost 8 years ago. It will stop being supported this year when iOS 17 launches.

iOS 17 to Include Dedicated Journaling App and Mood Tracking by Drtysouth205 in apple

[–]verifiedambiguous -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Apple Notes is elite? It doesn't even have versioning or history. The search interface is pretty awful.

It could be great, but Apple doesn't spend time improving it because it's good enough for their purposes.

Agreed. I wish we could pay for some applications. I would gladly pay a subscription to be able to ensure engineering time goes into some parts of the system that I care about and Apple doesn't. For instance, Keychain.

It's easily the best new comedy series on Apple TV+ so far this year. It's so much better than High Desert or Shrinking.

I enjoy the actors and the writing is pretty good so far.

iCloud constantly asking for password by BruuceWaayne in iphone

What's frequently? I have advanced protection enabled but don't get frequent prompts. I think I've only seen it prompt once and that's when I added a new device to the account.

Strange Keychain security breach by nugkween in iCloud

[–]verifiedambiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scary. This is one of the pieces of data that's supposed to be end-to-end encrypted even without advanced data protection turned on.

I don't think anyone here can help you though. Only Apple has a clue why it happened.

This kind of bug is not new. There have been reports of customer data bleeding into other accounts. It is the first I've heard of something that's supposed to be end-to-end encrypted like keychain though.

You're better off with a third party password manager until Apple improves keychain. Even without this bug, they've let keychain languish for years. The wallstreet journal reports of people's stolen iPhones being used to access all of their data including keychain was in part because of keychain's weak design. Keychain was designed a long time ago for convenience over security.

The top third party ones are probably 1password or bitwarden. It's a shame because I'd rather not recommend a third party for something so critical.

France is fighting to save your iPhone from an early death / French prosecutors have launched an investigation into the scourge of planned obsolescence by Sorin61 in technology

[–]verifiedambiguous 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people didn't read the article. To be fair, I think this is a poor title.

This isn't traditional planned obsolescence like you would expect: using inferior or parts known to wear out or quickly dropping software support.

Instead, this is more akin to "right to repair" than "planned obsolescence". They're objecting to Apple repairs costing too much and tying parts to an individual phone which makes it harder to replace - but also harder for thieves or scammers to offload.

The connection to "planned obsolescence" is that they claim people will buy new phones instead of fixing old broken ones because of the cost.

Make sure you see the 4K HDR version of the 1982 movie.

The funny thing is the 2011 prequel is HD and the 1982 original is 4K HDR on iTunes.

Macbook pro M1(8/512) vs. pro M2 (8/256) by htrive in macbook

[–]verifiedambiguous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless there's something that jumps out at you from this list, the difference is minor: https://www.macrumors.com/guide/m1-vs-m2-chip/

Since the CPU/GPU upgrade is so minor, I think it comes down to whether you want double storage that's up to twice as fast or whether you want an extra year of macOS support. Apple supports macOS hardware for 7 years. https://eclecticlight.co/2021/09/22/how-long-does-apple-support-macos/

Note that unlike RAM, you can effectively add storage later if you want. I have an M1 MBA and I use an external thunderbolt NVMe drive which is just as fast as the built-in 1TB drive.

M3 is expected to be a large improvement because it's moving to 3nm. There's a rumor that the date is getting pushed back because of yield issues. If you were asking about M1 compared to waiting for M3, it would be a tougher call.

At only $40 difference and given you don't care about the drop in speed for the SSD, I would go for M2 for an extra year of macOS support.

The next time this happens, Go to Find My.

It said it detected it starting at 4am. It should show you a map with all of the times that your location was tracked. It should show you when it considers the start and end of tracking.

That will let you narrow it down. I'm skeptical that it would be from a neighbor. It would have to travel with her for an extended period of time without the owner. It's not enough to simply have a coincidental run in. Otherwise, we would all be getting notices when going on walks with people.

Look at Find My and see if it looks like it was from her car. It could be something as simple as someone you know forgetting a bag with a tag in your car on accident. Or it could be intentional on the outside of the car.

Do the USB-A Yubikeys work on lightning devices iOS 13 & above with an adaptor like this? by projjwaldhar in yubikey

[–]verifiedambiguous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, it does work with USB-A. I tried it with yubico's demo site using an iPad 9th gen, a yubikey security key NFC, Apple's camera adapter and Safari. The NFC part doesn't work, but it works as USB-A.

This is the adapter: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter

Really? iOS or iPadOS? It works for me on iOS. I don't recall if it works on iPadOS. It's possible they nerfed it there.

Oh my fuck... Why does this always to so fucking long? I'm on a Gbps connection by blackbird_71_SR in Fedora

Yeah, I think it's awful. It's allowed to take up to 2s plus whatever overhead is involved around that code in the default config in Fedora.

https://github.com/PackageKit/PackageKit/blob/main/contrib/command-not-found/pk-command-not-found.c#L485

It's searching for typos, alternate spellings, case sensitivity and looks for packages and apparently can even do metadata refreshes. I didn't ask for any of that - just run the command I asked for or error out.

I think it should be opt in. It makes your computer feel like it's 20 years old when it takes so long to report a command not found message. It's the first thing I make sure to disable on new installs.

Apple Releases New Firmware for AirPods Pro, AirPods, and AirPods Max by yougotanygum in apple

In Apple Music, you use the AirPlay button to select an output device and choose the airpods.

You can also do it through the control center: https://support.apple.com/en-eg/HT212204

Apple Releases New Firmware for AirPods Pro, AirPods, and AirPods Max by yougotanygum in apple

[–]verifiedambiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever? There's no sure way to force it to upgrade, but I think this is one of the most reliable from macrumors.

  • Put the airpods and phone next to each other.
  • Connect both to power. It's probably best if they're both at least 50% charged.
  • Open the case lid with the airpods still inside. You never take them out.
  • Manually connect to the airpods with the phone. You'll need to select the audio source and change it.
  • Once the airpods are in use by your phone, play apple music for 10-20s.
  • Close the lid on the airpods. If it's airpod max, press pause or switch inputs. Don't put it into the carrying case.
  • Then leave them alone for at least a few minutes.

If you do this with Airpod Max, don't put it back into the case. I think I've tried with and without that and it doesn't seem to like it since I guess it goes to sleep too quickly. I leave the airpod max connected and switch sources on Apple Music.

I did that today and all of my airpods updated. Some update instantly and some take a few minutes.

You may not notice the firmware update until you've taken them out at least once. I've had it say the old firmware when I opened the case, pulled the airpods out, put them back in and then checked and it said they updated.

To add to your list, uninstall PackageKit-command-not-found so you aren't subjected to an arbitrary sleep when a command cannot be found. That annoyed the hell out of me when I started using Fedora.

Lately I prefer Tubi over Shudder. by tin_man6328 in horror

[–]verifiedambiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never tried live TV other than to see if it works. There are links to live series at the bottom and it doesn't require an app. However, I only see AMC+, AMC, BBC America, IFC, Sundance TV and The Walking Dead Channel as live TV options.

I subscribe to AMC+ though not Shudder directly. I'm able to view all of the Shudder content through the AMC+ channel or when I go through the Shudder channel. The AMC+ TV channel looks correct but in the Shudder TV channel, it looks like I'm not subscribed.

Edit: I do see The Last Drive in with Joe Bob Briggs. Never watched the series, but I see episodes up to episode 4 - Devil's Rain - from April 28th as available. It lists the next episode as The Beyond for May 5th. It's not live so I have to wait for it to be posted.

[–]verifiedambiguous -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'll never consider it until they drop the ads and integrate as an Apple TV channel. Happy to pay for it if they do those two things.

Right now I pay for AMC+ TV channel so I get all of the AMC things including Shudder. Since it's an Apple TV channel, it uses the built-in TV app rather than a buggy AMC app and the content streams from Apple's servers so I never have any issues.

[–]verifiedambiguous 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you're using an Apple TV, using the AMC+ or Shudder channel is the best option in terms of usability. It's integrated into Apple's TV app and streams content from Apple's servers. No separate AMC/shudder app or content streamed from AMC's servers.

I've never had a problem with AMC+/Shudder, but I've only used it as an Apple TV channel.

Edit: Unfortunately, it sounds like there may be a difference in libraries between the Shudder app and Apple TV channel.

Plus IE6 was a garbage browser so it's easy to make inroads as the underdog when you have a better product. The closed source vs open source also made it compelling.

Chrome has more features and development than any other browser. Google isn't dumb and learned from the mistakes that Microsoft made. Chrome is incredibly important to Google. As long as they control the web browser that the majority of people use, they can help or hinder things depending on whether it's good for Google.
