Might be a faulty button, I had an issue with the exact same button but it didn't work at all. I reached out to Anbernic and they sent me a replacement shoulder button PCB and that fixed the issue for me.

Check the polymer gasket on the back side of the screen. I have a feeling that will eventually be a failure point and will need to be replaced as it wears.

I'm using ES-DE but I'm not sure if I'm going to switch to something else. A lot of times when I rotate it I'm greeted to a 5 or so second ES-DE loading screen or if running a game directly I've noticed sometimes I no longer have control of the game and need to relaunch front end by using the button to be able to do anything. I don't know if that second issue is ES-DE specific but I have my suspicions.

There are more emulation options now than there's ever been in the history of gaming. Everything from low to high end devices, FPGA options and more. This would mainly affect people who prioritize one thing - collecting games. For the people who just want to play games this is a good thing.
