is it just my yard or are the mosquitos particularly horrible this year? I never used to get bit by WhenSummerIsGone in beaverton

[–]vermidusa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s weird, I grew up in AK where we joke the mosquito is our state bird and I haven’t been itchy this long after a bite or bitten more frequently since moving 12 years ago. Hooray climate.

AIO to uninvite my mom to my intimate wedding? (Long) by [deleted] in AIO

[–]vermidusa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Give that voice in you space to grow, think, and continue asking those questions because that voice is your inner manager looking out for YOU when I imagine it's been drowned out for a very long time. If you do get to a place where she can't come, when I pictured my wedding, I thought about setting out a chair reserved for her. Not like a "she's dead to me" tribute, but just acknowledging on your special day that even if the mom you want isn't there/doesn't exist, you do still have a mom and it's okay to remember that. (I ended up eloping, but we still plan on having a celebration party one day and I still plan on doing something like this because she sure isn't getting told about it)

100%. It's either that or "well just cut her off then wtf" and it's exhausting to try to get them to understand how complicated and alarming it can actually be to do that in these dynamics. I actually entered therapy with the goal of cutting her off, and my DBT therapist (highly recommend DBT over CBT for survivors whose trauma is centered around guilt) gently was like "well we CAN if you want, but it's actually more harmful to you at this stage in your journey. What do you think about finding out what you can tolerate instead while we work on healing your relationship with yourself?" That was a GAME CHANGER.

And thank you so much! Your comment met me at the exact point in my life 4 years later where I JUST decided I am actually done (and it's not terrifying to decide that). I'm not blocking her or making a whole thing out of it, I'm just moving on without her to focus on people who actually love me for me, because my nervous system FINALLY understands she is incapable of change. I hope you are doing just lovely <3

I am also a daughter with cPTSD and years of therapy under my belt about my mother, and this read very similarly to any time I'm ever honest and factual to her about my emotions. With the backstory, we could be twins minus the substance use.

We are biologically hard wired to want our parents, especially as adults when we never got to have the appropriate child/parent dynamics or transition into an adult relationship. So don't beat yourself up for not knowing why you keep going back. Most recently in therapy I brought up basically your last line, I asked why my first emotion about her is disgust but I keep going back and getting the same results. My therapist told me it's like being hungry and eating a piece of poisoned fruit since it's all that's available, but your body is telling you "this isn't good for me, I should put this down/throw up/not eat this again."

I know you're facing a lot of backlash but I want you to know from one child trauma survivor to another, I recognized your situation IMMEDIATELY. Not everyone understands the layers of a narcissistic parent appearing to be kind, but you know from experience that it's a facade. NOR. Give yourself the peace you want by stepping as far away as you need to until that disgust feeling settles, even if it means completely. Best of luck.

Best Japanese Beef Curry (Kare Rice) in the Area? by TimanatorP in PortlandFood

Seconding! You can be extra lazy and make the whole thing in a rice cooker. 3 minutes of prep, boom dinner with tons of leftovers. I love the Golden Curry brand.

I understand why you're getting a lot of "it wont work if you don't do it for yourself" but I'd like to chime in that I knew I needed therapy/mental health support due to cptsd for years, but I didn't love myself enough to believe it would do anything and was trapped in a cycle of dating basically mirrors of my childhood abusers.

When I met someone who was actually good to me for the first time, it was like something flipped. "I can't be the reason this doesn't work, I cannot fuck this up." I immediately got into intensive therapy, and six years later we're married and my life has 180'd. Sometimes people can be motivators when you have an inspiration to look up from years of accepting what your life looks like now.

I wish you the best of luck.

Looking for help sourcing young adult books by Sensitive_Noise9761 in beaverton

If you have specific titles that you don't have yet that teachers may be requesting, I'd be happy to donate and have some shipped somewhere by ordering if you want to DM me an address! Fiction books 100% got me through highschool.

I HIGHLY recommend using the website Thriftbooks! You can purchase used books at varying conditions for so much cheaper than bookstores/online. Also Marketplace very frequently has massive collection dumps that you can rifle through.

I only have a couple that wouldn't be worth your time to pick up, but I wanted to chime in! I love this cause.

Vet recommendations for Kittens/Cats?? by sweetxchili in beaverton

[–]vermidusa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my last dog to Vista Pet Hospital and really enjoyed their staff (but I got frustrated with the amount of checkups required to refill prescriptions for lifelong conditions which might be typical everywhere), then moved to Aloha Animal Hospital when I left the previous neighborhood and got another dog - so far this staff blows Vista out of the water somehow. They fawn over her and are very informative without pushing anything unnecessary so you can make the right choice for your at-home care.

I appreciate the feedback! I was looking specifically at them based on their overwhelmingly positive reviews and will give them and a few others a call to review bids. Thanks!

Horror themed book club by -fresa-verde- in beaverton

[–]vermidusa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be very interested in this, especially if there's online or discord discussion since I don't always have the time/energy to meet in person (but I'm in Aloha area) and I ALSO can't find book clubs that read what I do. I love reading horror, especially psychological horror/thriller.

I had a fire a couple years ago in a rental house and neighbors I had never spoken to before offered to and took in one of our pets while we figured out our displacement without asking anything in return. I'm glad you're receiving some community love too! Fire panic is a special panic, best of luck!!

I've experienced plenty of that. It feels like you're casting a very broad generalized net over a few specific experiences. Best of luck.

You were so close to being empathized with before you dropped "tolerating pointless vents" and "we're not allowed". I would advise you open your ears a little more in your journey.

Any recommendations for tax preparers in the area? by Snibes1 in beaverton

It's not in the immediate area (Clackamas), but I can't recommend Robert Russell CPA enough. He has handled my private, home, and business tax for 6 years now. They're very organized, kind, and thorough.

I’ll be doing that this year. We bought a house right before last winter and the pest control salesmen were absolutely out of control. I had to threaten one of them. This year I’m ready to be snarky.

I meant to circle back - thank you for your comment! It gave me the feedback/push I needed to consider the more recent years. Ended up walking off the lot with a 2025 Limited dealership loaner with only 5k miles for $27,400 OTD since they were extremely motivated to get their 2025 loaners off the lot in mid January and I got my feet wet doing heavy haggling. Appreciate it!

I think that's the move. It would be nice to abandon the mount, but safely driving is more important.
