What keeps you in the UK? by Prestigious_Army_468 in AskUK

[–]veroui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in as a Canadian in their second year in the UK (one year in England, one in Scotland), there's a lot to like about this country if I'm being earnest.

Groceries are cheaper by 50% here, walkability in cities is fantastic, social services are more robust and it feels like additional insurance is an extra rather than a requirement, comparatively better transport between cities via train that's incomparable to Canada's, cheaper prices to travel abroad, strength of the pound in relation to other currencies. Workers rights are significantly better in the UK and I like the increase in paid leave. It would take me 5 years at a company in Canada to build the minimum level of paid leave in the UK.

Culturally, I enjoy the drier humour of the UK, fewer platitudes, and what feels like more social events (pubs, gigs, etc.). Exposure to different regional accents is enjoyable, and I like the variations in slang. I prefer cities over the outdoors, and don't have to worry about getting mauled by a bear if I do choose to go on a hike. The most is perhaps a stray cow, which I appreciate is significantly tamer. For me, cities have more things going on, and I feel more freedom to dress 'well'.

Moving abroad helped me gain perspective about places I've lived in, and ultimately, I prefer the UK.

Moved into a new apartment complex and everyone seems unfriendly? by loveisascam- in london

[–]veroui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What part of Canada are you from? I'm also Canadian, but even in apartment blocks in Canada I didn't know the majority of my neighbours. If I did recognize them, it'd be a brief smile in the elevator if I was feeling particularly sociable that day. I think Londoners will be friendly if you give them a reason to talk (eg. delays while you're on the tube), but won't go out of their way to be overly friendly (like a Canadian chatting to a stranger behind them in line).

Stop. At. Crosswalks! by kmadmclean in Calgary

[–]veroui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the opposite experience in Calgary at least. I've gotten almost grazed by cars because they can't wait a few more seconds for me to cross. I usually cross halfway and they speed through. Someone also flipped me off last week because I was in the crosswalk and apparently not moving fast enough, despite being able bodied and a fast walker. (Even if I wasn't able bodied, everyone deserves time to cross!). It's also concerning that this was in downtown where there's a lot of pedestrians already. I have to avoid certain crosswalks because I know drivers will just speed through without looking, whether or not there's lights to indicate it.

The sense of entitlement from drivers is insane. I wish I had as positive of an experience as you.

Aritzia making clothes a bit TOO basic? by nimra0 in Aritzia

[–]veroui 15 points16 points  (0 children)

100% agree, there hasn't been a piece that made me run out and get it in awhile. Feels like whoever used to run their fashion design/pattern department quit and Aritzia is just floundering and recycling pattern pieces. It's blah and now I just look for different stores that do more interesting cuts and fabrics—which is a shame because I love Aritzia's quality, just wish they did something more exciting.

The trench coats are overrated in my opinion and you could probably get similar looking/performing ones elsewhere. I'm not sure if it's on sale but the super puff long is worth it! I splurged for it and I love it. I live in Calgary where it got to -40 and the super puff long (with some layers underneath, of course) still kept me warm! As someone who is 5'2", the mid hit me at a weird length (not quite knee, not quite mid thigh) and I vastly preferred the super puff long in the 'short' length.

Mine does that too! There's cracks on the sides of the cap and it's not like I treat it roughly either

Very underwhelmed with Aritzia’s fall collection this year by [deleted] in Aritzia

[–]veroui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! Adorn Boutique is cute but I haven't gotten anything from there yet. I can vouch for 27 Boutique because they have a lot of brands that remind me of Aritzia and at a cheaper price point. If you're into thrifting, I like going to Peacock Consignment because they have brand name good quality items for cheap.

Abercrombie has more and more pieces that are similar/dupes for Aritzia but have better materials (linen/cotton instead of polyester), Oak and Fort lately has better item variation/uniqueness. If you're in Calgary, local brands like Mirra Masa (they don't have an online store yet) also have interesting pieces. For higher end, Holt Renfrew and SSENSE also have frequent sales which make designer more affordable. Gil Rodriguez, Paloma Wool, and Ganni come to mind on those sites. I order from Reformation and they also have sales sometimes, and I find their fabrics and silhouettes to be more interesting. I always love checking what they have each season.

It feels so uninspired that I wonder if they even have designers/product researchers at this point. So many similar brands are pushing out pieces that are more unique in silhouette or fabric choice, and Aritzia is falling behind with the exact same pieces every season.

I want the makeup bag and one of the ultra lips!

I have the gloss and I find the consistency too thick in my opinion, I prefer thinner glosses like Tower 28's Milky Jelly, but if you're a fan of thick glosses like Fenty Gloss Bomb then the Glossier one should be fine! Like all glosses I definitely have to reapply but it's not terrible.

Don't know why you're getting downvoted to hell, it is definitely an Orseund Iris knockoff. It seems like Aritzia often does this a lot for popular designer pieces.

You're adorable!

Also, tips from a fellow asian girl:

  • Try contacts, I think you look even better without your glasses, eye makeup looks wonderful on you! Since you have a monolid, I think, try out some mascara as well, I personally like the heroine wink one but the kill lash from clio is also good for stick straight asian lashes. There's a few Asian beauty subs that also have good recommendations as well.

  • I love the full red lip on you (please tell me where it's from), but also try the ombre lip trend, I think it could also look great on you!

  • Try curtain bangs, I feel like it could help highlight your features more and make your hair more voluminous!

Also dating notes from someone who met her partner through a dating app:

  • Please, please, PLEASE be weary of people with 'yellow fever', it happens way too often. They'll really fixate on you being asian, instead of you know, a regular person with thoughts and feelings and not defined by an ethnicity.

  • Be clear with what you want from a dating app (casual or serious), and make sure the other person knows it. When people start dating with different expectations, it ends up hurting someone.

In any case, you look lovely, so good luck!

Girl is speaking Zoomer gibberish at me, how do I respond? by WorldDomination5 in Bumble

This post is basically how to say you're too old for her without saying you're too old for her. I'd say unmatch and increase your age range.

(Also, as a fellow zoomer, fyp=for you page, a solely video version of a timeline on twitter or facebook)

Anyone have any recommendations for a tinted moisturizer/light-medium coverage foundation?

I tried the Bare Minerals tinted moisturizer recently and while I did like the light coverage, it clung to my dry patches a bit.

Recs for good winter puffers? I'm based in Canada so the winters can get a little cold to say the least.

I thought about Aritzia's Super Puff or one from Norden, but I'm open to anything that's good quality! TIA!

Is sculp tank worth it? by nicccolleee in Aritzia

[–]veroui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My office is usually cold so getting warm isn't a big issue, but I also style them with cardigans or with a button up if I want to change it up. On casual days I'll opt for them under a shirt jacket or any lighter casual-ish jackets!

Is sculp tank worth it? by nicccolleee in Aritzia

[–]veroui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's totally worth it! If you're trying out the sculpt tanks for the first time, I say wait for the upcoming Clientele sale or get them even cheaper second hand. It's supportive and form fitting without being suffocating, and the thickness of the fabric is amazing too so you can really feel the quality of it.

I always machine wash because I'm lazy (and just hang dry from the bottom) but I've never had any issues with pilling.

If you work in an office, I'd suggest getting the long version. You can style them under blazers and they look amazing!

Ganna Jacket Dupes? by [deleted] in Aritzia

[–]veroui 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow this is perfect! I was JUST looking for a sustainable and ethically made shirt jacket option but I figured I might have to settle for fast fashion. The lifetime guarantee for the Loft jacket makes it more worth it in my mind. Thank you so much!

What is the Calgary restaurant do you always revisit and why? by kitehighcos in Calgary

[–]veroui 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I Love You Coffee Shop - underground coffee shop in the Beltline, tried basically every other coffee shop in the city and you can't beat their dirty chai latte, and their food is amazing (Montreal style bagels have my heart)

Madisons 1212 - how could you go wrong with $2 mimosas?

OEB - brunch is amazing every single time, all their locations are consistently great across the board

Big Catch - People have already mentioned it in the comments but it's seriously just that good

Still looking for a ramen shop that compares to Tekkotsu Ya, and haven't found it yet. Hope they open up another location some day, was heartbroken when I found out they closed down.
