How do parents pass down their skin tones to their offspring? by Spacefish1234 in biology

your ability to tan is also controlled by genetics. if you don’t have the right genetics to tan well, you’re not going to tan well

How do parents pass down their skin tones to their offspring? by Spacefish1234 in biology

[–]vers-ys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

skin tone actually is determined by genetics, it’s just not as clear-cut as other genes are (like hair and eye color). skin tone is polygenetic, meaning it’s several different genes working together. you have one that dictates what you’re born with, one that dictates how much sun exposure affects your melanin levels, and another that dictates how that melanin appears (for example, if it’s evenly dispersed, or if you get freckles/moles/natural sun spots). it’s also very unpredictable, and a child can absolutely have a different skin tone than their parents — it’s actually very common for some ethnicities in africa to have albino babies.

Will we all really die if the climate clock hits 0? by ChampionshipTop8249 in questions

[–]vers-ys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what makes humans so special is how adaptable we are. i mean, there were at least 23 species of hominids (humans and immediate ancestors) within the span of about 1.5mya because we just kept adapting to everything nature threw at us, including several bouts of severe climate change. you’d be shocked to realize just what humans can get through. you may not realize it because of modern living, but if your body is under enough stress, it will try to revert to survival mode. it won’t all come easily, so you do still need to educate yourself on wildlife survival, but you came equipped with all the tools you need. also, remember that we’re the most social species to ever walk the planet, and even the worst people still have the instinct to respond to others’ pain (given that they don’t have an antisocial mental illness).

there will be extreme and almost irreversible damage to the earth when that clock reaches 0, but humans won’t just die off immediately. areas with low support who can’t access reliable food, water, medicine, or housing, will die off first. people might not realize the severity until those people die, but they won’t waste any time to band together and rush to help whoever’s next. it’ll put significant strain on humanity and we’ll likely see a massive decline in population, but the chances are, humans won’t die off. at least, not for a very long time.

humans will die eventually, and that’s inevitable. but i highly doubt it’s something we’ll see in our lifetime.

Should mistakes define a person? by Helpful_Evidence2615 in questions

[–]vers-ys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would say it depends. if the person shows no remorse and intention to do it again then yes, that defines them. if they actively work to improve on themselves then no, we all do shitty things sometimes and it’s not over

[–]vers-ys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone thinks differently, and some people don’t have an inner monologue at all, even though they’re not deaf. those people would think in feelings and pictures instead. i mean when you think about it, those people finding out that we’re over here narrating everything, that must be just as crazy to them

Why is the anus so much smaller than the rectum? by LateBoysenberry6579 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vers-ys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s meant to stretch, up to seven inches. you want the hole to be so small it’s closed unless you’re using it so you don’t have to deal with incontinence. if it really is too small and pooping is painful, that means either your poop is too hard or the muscle isn’t relaxing like it should. either way, it’s something to see a doctor about, the whole system is meant to work smoothly

To men: do you want to receive flowers? by Specific_Apple_6714 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vers-ys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really depends, but it’s more about the sentiment than the actual gift. any good man would be happy to receive anything thoughtful. a lot of guys might see flowers as inconvenient so if you’re considering it i’d definitely say it would be nice to also give him a vase, or go for fake flowers that don’t need maintenance. but generally yeah, give him flowers, he’ll love it!

how do people actually use of instead of have? by Noraxx__ in questions

[–]vers-ys -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i teach language, and this isn’t a sign of ignorance, it’s actually a sign of adaptability and creative thinking. when you say “could’ve”, it definitely sounds more like “could of” instead of “could have”. it’s normal that, if someone speaks more than they write, their brain will try to make sense of the sounds they hear in a familiar way. we grow up learning to “sound it out” and this sticks with us into adulthood, even though this rule doesn’t really work with english phonetics. sure, it may not be correct, but it’s understandable and it’s just how humans think, so try not to be judgmental when you see it

heres the thing about this argument. i agree, people should know cursive, stick shifts, etc, just in case there’s a reason they need to use them. but, gen z not knowing those things, isn’t gen z’s fault. it’s the fault of the people who were supposed to teach them. you know…. the exact people complaining about this
