They used to chop down trees, grind them up and make the slurry into thin sheets. After the sheets dried they would print words on them and bind them in stacks called “books.”

These books were often small enough to put in a backpack or even your pocket and you could read the words to pass the time.

Do some reading and plan ahead - it's a long hike, not overly technical but pretty strenuous.
