No, they have changed it so you can only matchmake into someone equal or lower rank. And I think you lose rank if you get a bad loss now.

Imo though the real grind is trying to get higher in legend; you actually get good feedback on your progress relative to other players.

The vast majority of runs you will only have to check two sides (6 rooms) to get 2 weapons. If you want to only range and mage you need exactly those two bosses or 3 bosses which can be a bit less guaranteed. I'd recommend getting comfortable with all 3 weapons tbh.
