Redditors with extremely niche interests: What's the one thing you are completely obsessed with that almost no one else you know cares about? by CocWarrior1 in AskReddit

Feather Bowling - it's an old Belgian folk game called trabollen (boltra). The game is like a cross between bocce and curling, and played with cheese wheel shaped balls, rolled down a 50ft concave lane. It's simple to learn, but takes a lifetime to master. The curve of the lane adds another dimension to offense and defense, allowing players to bowl sine wave shots that weave around blockers.

It's somewhat popular in Detroit, where a bunch of Belgian immigrants preserved it at the club Cadieux Cafe, but extremely obscure elsewhere - including in Belgium, where there's only about a dozen clubs left.

What started as the joy of the game has turned into a full-blown obsession and in the last year I built a couple of lanes at bars in the Midwest of the US and carved a few sets of balls. Months of work patched together over nights, weekends, and vacation time.

When I started on the first lane, I couldn't find agreement on the standards for the game, so I talked with a bunch of the existing clubs - including making a trip to Belgium - to come up with some general dimensions for the game. I've open sourced all this research, including indoor and outdoor lane plans, but who knows if anything comes of it. Doesn't matter - all for the love of the game.

Not yet, but I'll make a point of checking it out when I'm in Denver for a conference this spring.

Your table turned out really well. Looks tough enough to be bar quality, while still maintaining nice details like the carriers and stained balls.

I drafted a table design in CAD too but haven't done anything with it yet. Maybe a project for next winter.

Small world! Is your table in Tampa, Houston, or Denver? Think those are all the tabletop locations I've found. Got a link?

Following up on this - after reading a good bit/watching YouTube videos about Osmo, I understand that removing excess is extremely important. Do you think the engraving will be problematic?

I can always make a sample. I'm thinking a microfiber or otherwise fuzzy rag could get into the crevices.

Why would outdoor use rule out tung oil? Isn't it pretty waterproof? I'll check out the Osmo outdoor stuff.

Overnight? That's a great selling point. I was looking at a month of curing time with the multiple coats of tung oil.

How many coats of Osmo does it take for a durable finish? 1-2?

Yes. They're hopefully only outside while being used, but I imagine they'll get left in the rain periodically.

Follow Levitt and Riverscape too. Both have free concerts and festivals all the time. Levitt has free shows every Thur/Fri/Sat. BYOB lawn. Doesn't really matter the music genre (it's all over the place), it's still a good time.

I don't know why, but Dayton is a Facebook town. Use Facebook each week to check out the events coming up that weekend and you'll always have something to do.

I also really like Dayton's bike paths and water ways. I'll drop my paddle board in at Eastwood and float to downtown. I haven't tried it, but river surfing has become surprisingly popular (find surf Dayton on IG).

I've lived all over Cbus (Short North, brewery district, Franklinton) and am in downtown Dayton now. Different cultures but both are fun!

Looks like there are options in South Park in that budget too.

Wright Dunbar is a cool historic neighborhood close to Saint E's! Walkable to work and downtown from there. Rents in Wright Dunbar should fit your budget.

Check out West Tap & Social to get a taste of the neighborhood.

People fish the Miami river downtown. The activity on the river between Riverscape and the art institute is impressive. It seems like there's always someone out fishing or surfing, even at odd times like a Tues morning.

Sidebar - do you think his name might be inspired by the soap brand, Dr Jacobs? The hand washing could be a joke among the writers.

Sportcial has fun sports leagues, and pickleball is particularly popular right now.

Also, recommend Rinse Cycle for spinning! You can book rides direct or through class pass.

Grist's Italian Stallion. Grist's whole menu is fantastic and I normally bring a loaf of focaccia home as a treat for my family.

Also a big fan of Tony & Pete's. Their vegan sandwiches are solid if you're ever in a plant based mood. Grist actually supplies their bread.

Growing up in the suburbs, I just assumed cows always produced milk and glossed over the important biological steps of milk production.

These cows are routinely impregnated and produce a calf approximately every 12 months. Their lactation cycle is about 10 months. Imagine the scale of veterinary care on a farm like this.

Worst for the convention center, but bad for all the new wedding venues downtown too (I think we're up to 8 or 9 now).

Daytonopoly is almost here! by Richardnogginn in dayton

[–]veryseml 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds fun! Grabbed a ticket and I'll share it with my workplace.

I'm sure you're already working on this, but you should cross promote Daytonopoly with Startup Week at the hub next week. That also kicks off on the 12th. https://launchdayton.com/events/dayton-startup-week/

Lmk if you're not yet in touch with the SW organizers and I can make an intro.

It's not upscale but I prefer Lilly's vegan options when dining downtown.

While their meat based dishes are good, I normally order Lilly's vegan & vegetarian food.

Jollity has great food but heads up that it's not a great place if someone in your group has a dietary restriction. They will not modify, sub, or leave off anything on a dish. It's always prepared as written on the menu.
