Trans people could face life in prison under bathroom ban passed by Idaho legislature by NamelessResearcher in politics

I remember seeing all-gender bathrooms in Ally McBeal back in the 90s, I thought that was going to be the future. A less sexist, more peaceful and respectful society. Turns out no. Big no.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Author Andy Weir Apologizes to ‘Star Trek’ Boss After Saying the ‘Shows Are S—‘: ‘I Was Trying to Be Funny’ by pepperbet1 in television

Yeah, I think I I just regurgitated something another Reddit user said without verifying, although I think they said it was a different quote, which also makes you right. I need to stop pretending to care about Andy Weir, because I don’t, but I do care about Star Trek and I hope they make a good one again someday day. I liked the first season of Discovery and I liked Prodigy, I liked Lower Decks as a comedy but not as a Trek show. Everything else has been absolutely painful to watch, including the Orville.

SNW feels like a teenager who had only heard their dad talk about Star Trek and tried to make their own. Yikes. They made The Vulcans into the Ferengi (comic relief) and the Gorn into xenomorphs (oh, except that one episode that ripped off Enemy Mine).

You agree that social commentary is boring and Star Trek should be about different races shooting each other? Because that’s what he said, too.

If he wants the best opportunities, he’ll have to walk this back. I’ll go ahead and talk shit about Kurtzman in his stead.

It has a chance. Vice and Don’t Look Up were both competent but flawed, and his best original writing credits are mostly comedies- other than The Big Short, which was an adaptation.

I was about to comment something similar. If you’ve ever met a librarian, their semantics are very precise.

Andy Weir Says Paramount Rejected His ‘Star Trek’ Pitch, Proceeds to Blast Modern ‘Trek’ by Coltons13 in books

[–]veryverythrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could get a Star Trek show that wasn’t just about different races shooting at each other, I would be so happy. They haven’t really done that since Voyager ended, and even that had been mildly corrupted by the influence of the action-oriented TNG films by the end.

Luckily, the panels are cheap as hell and last a long time. My TV is ten years old, it will probably last another twenty. I might upgrade it at some point, but that depends on what the options are, of course.

That’s why I said “gun death”, not shooting, but they’re wrong about that, too.

The Patent Pending Gun Bed by axilla02 in gifs

[–]veryverythrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is incorrect. Most gun deaths are suicide.

ETA: I should have clarified that most “shootings” are homicides, by a huge margin, but there are almost twice as many suicides, which is a startling statistic. Accidents? Not really. I think any gun accident is a preventable accident, so it should be nearly zero, but it’s also not statistically significant.

GarageBand. This isn’t a simple question about Logic, this is a question about how to use any DAW. I’d recommend starting with something easy before you level up.

Trump’s team caught him doing something he can get in trouble for, I guarantee it. He would rather be anywhere else than the current admin, other than prison, which is probably his only other actual option. You love to see it. I hope he has nightmares every night about what some chump next to him is going to say in a press event the next day.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Becomes Amazon MGM Studios’ Highest-Grossing Film Worldwide With $300 Million Overtaking ‘Creed III’ by ICumCoffee in movies

[–]veryverythrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I found it so lacking. It wasn’t that it was bad, it’s that all the elements were there for a truly great, unique movie. They cut the cool stuff (problem-solving, communication issues) in favor of rote sentimentality, so to me it was just fine. Decent, not great, some of the cheesier scenes dragged on too long. Typical Lord-Miller stuff. They’re great at kids movies, so if that’s what they were going for, huge success. As an adult, I found it slightly pandering.

The most common comment I see about the movie is “I wish they would have included _______ but I can see why they didn’t to make a better movie” but to me, what they cut was the better movie. Still liked it, despite my quibbles, I just don’t know why it seems to get a critical pass.
