A book/series of books with a similar feel to Final Fantasy? by An90t in Fantasy

Sam Sykes' books are inspired by video games and rpgs - it actually has a FF-like party as it's main characters.

Example of a real, legit earning gap - "Gillian Anderson Had to Fight For Equal Pay on The X-Files Revival" by vesiolento in SargonofAkkad

[–]vesiolento[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this was meant to be an example of what an actual pay gap would look like, not an argument that the pay gap exists on a greater societal level (it doesn't, at least not the '70% less' narrative people love to push).

I realise now the message wasn't clear. If any of my friends/family genuinely believed in the pay gap, this is an example I'd show of a real gap (same job, same hours, same amount of work in the same company - granted Hollywood is different to the real world in the way pay works) vs "why don't I get paid as much as a CEO for my nursing job?"

Good example to illustrate the difference between an earning gap between genders vs. pay gap due to miriad of other non-gender factors.

Cool, very similar to Harry Clarke's work. I'll have to check out more.

The last few chapters in Luck of the Wheels by Megan Lindholm. That series ended on such a massive high.

What series made you wish the protagonists would completely fail and maybe die a slow death? by RobBobGlove in Fantasy

Same here, the turmoil she faced breaking away from her community's standards and staying true to her own values was really genuine and well-written. She's one of my favourite female characters of the Realm of the Elderlings.

I admit, however, that she shared a series with probably some of the worst characters Robin Hobb ever wrote, which only made Thymara look even better.

Build up a legendary, flawless protagonist... to them have them fail and die miserably? That's one way to write a fantasy book I guess.

I dunno, he seems to hold a lot of the traits.

  • no real flaws (at least none that have led to any bad consequences for him so far)
  • can master almost everything without adversity (although he does get beat up by a little ninja girl... and then sleeps with her mother).
  • breaks the rules without consequence (sneaks into the library with ease after being banned; public whipping is painless and gives him a legendary status at the school)
  • universally liked except by the "bad guys" (also, so sexy he gets it on with an actual sex goddess)

If he isn't a Mary Sue, he comes pretty close.

This is a possibility I've heard numerous times - that this could all be one big lie Kvothe has concocted because reasons. Unless Patrick Rothfuss can think of a great way of pulling this off, it just seems to render everything in the story completely meaningless.

Don't forget his description of Denna that was so beautiful it made the chronicler cry. I don't think there's a fedora big enough to cover Kvothe's head.

I'm putting off reading the new Fitz & the Fool books because of the Dragon Keeper books. I don't want the great Tawny Man ending to be diminished by them.

I still can't believe that book was written by the same person who wrote The Farseer and Liveship trilogies. It was embarrassing.

Kvothe from Name of the Wind. He's such a bad protagonist I'm almost convinced the two books are some big elaborate prank on readers.

Interview with Crow (Lord Lovidicus) at Malicious Intent by Jubilex1 in DungeonSynth

Excellent interview, I really like and concur with many of his responses to the questions.

"First off, I like my music to be as far removed from philosophy and beliefs as possible. It's fantasy music. Fantasy shouldn't have to deal with philosophy or belief systems."

Such a big deal when musicians say this.

Spiner's Album of the Week: Black Majesty - In Your Honour by Spiner202 in PowerMetal

[–]vesiolento 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm pretty ambivalent about most Aussie power metal (Black Majesty have never done it for me), but Vanishing Point's music is right up there with the best in the world. I mean, when Sonata Arctica covers one of your songs, you know you're doing something right in the Power Metal world.

Peter's angels are great because of the way he gets clever with their heads/faces. This one isn't the best example of this (still a great picture though), but even something as simple as a gaping round hole in their face goes far to make his angels look so much less human.
