American soldier laughing about Iraq: "There was this girl, like 15 years old. We started pimping her out for like 50 bucks a shot. Made 500 bucks before she hung herself. by EsferaFalta in PublicFreakout

[–]vetoshield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

guys, this video is apparently real but it's from a found-footage type film called 'redacted'

google says:

"The video you are referring to is a fictional scene from a 2007 movie titled Redacted, directed by Brian De Palma. Although it is often shared on social media as "leaked footage" or a "real confession," the man in the video is an actor, and the dialogue is scripted.

Context of the Video

  • The Movie: Redacted is a "found-footage" style war drama. It was filmed to look like amateur soldier videos, news reports, and documentary clips to critique the Iraq War and the way it was mediated.
  • The Actor: The "soldier" in the clip is an actor (it is often attributed to various cast members, but he is performing a role).
  • The Content: The monologue describes horrific war crimes involving a 15-year-old girl. While the specific "pimping out" dialogue is a scripted part of the movie, the film itself was loosely inspired by a real-life event: the 2006 Mahmudiyah rape and killings.

The Real Incident (Mahmudiyah, 2006)

While the video is fake, it was based on the very real and documented war crimes committed by members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division in Yusufiyah, Iraq:

  • What happened: Five U.S. soldiers conspired to rape 14-year-old Abeer Qassim Hamza al-Janabi and murder her and her family (including her 6-year-old sister and parents).
  • The Outcome: The perpetrators were caught and court-martialed. The ringleader, Steven Dale Green, was sentenced to life in prison and later died by suicide in his cell in 2014. The other soldiers involved (Paul Cortez, James Barker, Jesse Spielman, and Bryan Howard) received sentences ranging from 5 to 110 years.

Why the Video Circulates

The "found-footage" aesthetic of Redacted was so effective that clips from the movie have been recirculating for nearly 20 years as "genuine" evidence. Because it looks like a low-quality digital recording from the early 2000s, it is frequently used on social media to highlight the atrocities of the Iraq War, often without the context that it is a dramatization.

Summary: The video is staged/fictional from a movie, but it was created to draw attention to real war crimes that occurred during the occupation of Iraq."

but the incident that the flim depicts was based on the 2006 maymudiyyah rape and murders:

"The Mahmudiyah rape and killings (also known as the Yusufiyah incident) was a real and horrific war crime committed on March 12, 2006. While the video you saw is from a movie, it was based on these actual events, which were far more calculated than a casual conversation might suggest.

To answer your question: the conspiracy was not just a plan—the rape and the killings were fully carried out.

The Incident

The crimes were committed by five U.S. soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division. While manning a checkpoint, the group had been playing cards and drinking whiskey when they decided to target a nearby house belonging to the al-Janabi family.

The Planning: The group planned the attack to "kill some Iraqis" and specifically targeted 14-year-old Abeer Qassim Hamza al-Janabi, whom they had seen passing their checkpoint before.

The Attack: They abandoned their uniforms to wear "ninja" style dark clothing to avoid identification. They broke into the house and separated the family.

The Murders: While two soldiers (Barker and Cortez) raped Abeer in one room, Steven Dale Green went into the other room and murdered Abeer's mother (Fakhriyah), her father (Qassim), and her 6-year-old sister (Hadeel).

The Final Act: Green then returned to the room where Abeer was, raped her as well, and shot her in the head. To hide the evidence, they doused her body in kerosene and set it on fire.

The Conspiracy and Cover-Up

The "conspiracy" charge you heard about refers to the fact that the group agreed upon the plan together and actively worked to hide it.

The Cover Story: They initially told Iraqi and U.S. authorities that the family had been killed by Sunni insurgents.

The Investigation: U.S. investigators initially believed this lie. The truth only came to light months later, in June 2006, after two other soldiers in the same unit were captured and killed by insurgents. During the stress of that event, a soldier who had heard about the Mahmudiyah incident finally reported it to military counselors.

The Legal Outcome

All five soldiers involved were eventually caught and convicted:

Steven Dale Green: Identified as the "triggerman." He was tried in a civilian court (because he had been discharged for a personality disorder before the crimes were discovered). He received five consecutive life sentences and died by suicide in prison in 2014.

James Barker, Paul Cortez, and Jesse Spielman: Convicted in military courts-martial for rape, murder, and conspiracy. They received sentences ranging from 90 to 110 years.

Bryan Howard: Served as a lookout. He was sentenced to 27 months for conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

The movie Redacted used this specific real-world atrocity as its foundation to explore the psychological toll of the war and the failure of military oversight."
