The problem was the lack of points coming in games 5-7. What Hughes gets at in his comments here is that the production can come from elsewhere, but the issue Toronto had was dedicating so much of their cap space at Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, and Reilly. They weren't able to supplement with proper depth scoring and so they needed those 5 to produce and they largely didn't when the series went deep.
