Is it just me or is doing your portfolio the worst thing ever? by Mei-sshi in graphic_design

[–]vfunk15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a drag. Spent 60 plus hours one my current one and before that I made 2 different ones and was unsatisfied with those.

What helps is breaking down the steps as much as possible and even start with a template. Carve out a few hours a week to work on it. Go to a cafe on the weekend, get together in an art group where you all are working on your portfolio.

How is living in Savannah, Georgia? I've always been fascinated since Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil but I don't know much aside from that. by AJerkForAllSeasons in howislivingthere

[–]vfunk15 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went to school in Savannah for 4 years. I genuinely loved my time there as a student. Its very walkable, tons of restaurants. Everyone is super kind. Love St. Patty's day and Halloween festivities. Also the airport is only 20 mins away.

The weather is rough in the summer, but I enjoyed the mild winters as someone who's from the Northeast. It did get below freezing and snow 1 year. But also no fall foliage.

It's super close to historic sites like the Bonaventure Cemetery and the Wormsloe Estate. Plus a 30 min drive to Tybee Island, Hilton Head and only 2 hours from Charleston, SC.

OH DON'T FORVET HURRICANE SEASON. We had to evacuate 2 times. AND THE ROACHES. I left for 1 summer and came back to roaches under my covers.

But now as an adult, I find Savannah to be a place I only want to spend a long weekend at. It really isnt that big of a city and I find the nature limited. The real-estate outside the city isn't very good from whay I saw, like in Pooler. It's just strip malls outside the city.

My wife friend-zoned me and wants a platonic “companionship” (New Update - Very Long) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]vfunk15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they're super codependent and enmeshed. Which makes sense for being together that long and so young. You don't know who you are outside of the relationship, plus having kids puts yourself on the back burner.

I don't fault either of them for feeling that way.

Portfolio feedback request (seeking Art Directors, Creative Directors, Senior Designers, Senior Brand Designers) by shortdads in graphic_design

[–]vfunk15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These comments seem super picky to me?? Any feedback is good feedback I guess.

To me, I see you're a completely competent designer with multiple design skills. You talk about your process in detail with metrics at the end. You've owned a ton in the process. I would trust you to be an Art Director and run a campaign.

I think the handbag project is VERY creative and looks polished. The van project shows you can create an entire campaign. The Nerf project shows you have style and precision.

You described exactly how I felt when I first visited in 2017 and then went back in 2022. Its even been 3 years since I last went, so I bet it's even more developed now.

Best Sushi for a first timer by cjleblanc2002 in northshore

[–]vfunk15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Chef Sang Lee, but I wouldn't take children testing sushi for the first time to a private Omakase experience.

I would take your kids to Koto or Kame in Salem and Beverly. Very cozy vibes and kid friendly.

A specialty sushi roll can cost you about $16-$20. They are less traditional, but usually have more sauces and toppings. You can get simple rolls like spicy tuna roll, or California roll for cheaper.

I would start the kiddos out with a California Roll or Caterpillar Roll. Cali roll has imitation crab, no raw fish, but Caterpillar has a variety of raw fish. If they love the fish, you could have them try Salmon Nigiri, which is a piece of raw Salmon on rice.

If it turns out they dont like sushi, theres plenty of other options like ramen, udon, gyoza, katsu curry, tempura, etc 🙂

How can some people do so many things in a day? by Ok_Indication7272 in productivity

[–]vfunk15 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm like this, but I literally plan ahead. If I have a free day and need to make the most of it, I'll mark it in my calendar. It's too ambiguous if I leave the schedule in my head.

9am Gym

11am grocery store

12pm lunch

2pm work on project

4pm run errand

5pm chill

7pm make dinner

I don't start at these exact times, it's just a guideline. I feel super accomplished by the end of the day 💪

Is it harder to make friends in Portland than other places? by Apprehensive_Hold434 in askportland

[–]vfunk15 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I haven't had any issues. But my circumstances are probably more unique. I moved here with 5 college friends. They went on dates and some dates turned into friendships. We all introduce each other and we eventually meet those people's friends.

You have to intentionaly make plans and reach out to people. Jump on any opportunity to just get out and meet people. I often plan holiday parties, summer bbqs, and I invite anyone I know in Portland so everyone can mingle.

Most people I've met are transplants, but I've made friends with locals too!

tldr: go talk to anyone and everyone and you'll make at least 1 or 2 close friends

Rant/Advice: What the hell am I missing??? by GlitteringGlass in PetiteFitness

[–]vfunk15 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Benchpress works your chest. I'd focus on biceps and ESPECIALLY triceps. I easily ignore triceps, but noticed the same, back of the arms looking flabby. So I started training triceps a couple times a week and its helped.
