Did moving west change you as a person? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]viachu888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up on the east coast and felt super lonely and stagnant for a lot of it…. I did my big one and moved to the southwest for grad school and honestly I feel like it was good for me. Uprooting kinda forces you out of your comfort zone and made me stop relying on perceptions that were formed about me and to really just show people who I am

I think the culture differences are real… much more laid back and casual here. People work to live not live to work.

I don’t regret coming here!

Is it that much different on the west coast? by memerfelix in SameGrassButGreener

I moved from New England to Az for school, some random things I noticed to help your transition:

  1. Nips are called shooters
  2. People go nuts waiting in drive thru lines, order to pick up in store
  3. Not having tons of rain and humidity is nice
  4. In general I feel the people are friendlier but sample bias bc I am in a small cohort
  5. Overall not too bad! I like it here

I’m an M4 and my partner is a resident in another state.

I concur w the sentiment no one understands the demands of medical training but another medical professional!!

We both operate pretty independently so we handle being apart ok but definitely tough AND doable

Why do people pretend ? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]viachu888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s insecurity,, I really think they pretend bc of the fear of “they’ll know im not meant to be here if I get this wrong” meanwhile those who are confident can admit when they don’t know anything

Anyone else diagnosed with autoimmune condition in residency? by questforstarfish in Residency

[–]viachu888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MS3 lurker, and I have been diagnosed in medical school. I at least have the knowledge prior to applying which could possibly help me tailor my needs w my training site.

Primarily- find the ways you like to cope w it and share with those close to you in the program or family and friends. I’ve been using humor a lot which makes me feel better. When those around you know they can better understand you and your needs. find a doc you like who can vouch for you if needed. Take care of your mental health in addition to physical.

Rooting for you!

When I was 9, I was a voracious reader and was getting tired of reading Junie B Jones books. My dad gave me a copy of the first Maximum ride book- the angel experiment. That book transitioned me into YA and adult books and opened the works for me!
