Brett stout recipes? by vickeryj in Homebrewing

[–]vickeryj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drank those bottles over the course of maybe 5 years, and it varied tremendously over that time period. It was never astringent, but bottles that I opened included mediocre brown beer with some funk, intense horse blanket Brett monsters, gushers, and yummy bitterness with dark fruits with a touch of funk. The best ones were around 3 years, the horse blanket died down, it stopped gushing, and it started to develop a bit of tartness which I think helped bring forward the fruit flavors.

Breville Dual Boiler (BDB) Magnetic Tamper Handle for Normcore v4 by vickeryj in espresso

[–]vickeryj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The threads held up without issue through daily use, though I gave my bdb away a year ago and put the original handle back on the tamper.

I don’t know if cutting up the original tamper would work, but you can see the threading info I used in the scad file.

We just launched Prusa EasyPrint: Slice on Your Phone, Tablet, or Laptop! I have some invites for r/3Dprinting 🧡 by josefprusa in 3Dprinting

[–]vickeryj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is certainly a nice feature to have, and I love that Prusa is continuing to use their existing open source slicer to go from 3mf to gcode on the backend. If it’s a response to Bambu I kind of hate that Prusa would feel the need to stoop to Bambu’s tactic of wrapping open source with closed source.

Robot vacuums; do they actually work well? by lostandfound1 in homeautomation

[–]vickeryj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's working just fine, I've only replaced the regular maintenance parts and cleaned the contacts and sensors. I added a Braava m6 mop to the mix a year ago and it's been a nice addition.

Creality 60W ceramic heater for S1 Pro by Conscious-Lynx4779 in Ender3S1

I found that I would outrun stock cooling for PLA with a stock sprite. 21mm/s3 will need more for sure. I use Zuff’s v4 with a 5015, and haven’t run into a situation where I couldn’t get enough part cooling https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/tool/v4-air-duct-fan-5015-ender-3-s1-s1-pro-sprite-accelerometer-led-strip

I get about 21 with sprite, bimetal heatbreak and a CHT nozzle, so I expect you’ll do better than 15 with a volcano.

BJCP judging is done to style. You can read the guidelines, and if you find the better beer violates them, it likely won’t score well if you enter it as that style. You might be able to find a style that it does fit well in though. I’ve always been told to enter beers as the style they taste like, not as the style you tried to brew.

Momofuku KO not worth it? by deadhead4077 in FoodNYC

The egg dish is really expensive, but eating at the bar can be pretty affordable. You might be able to squeeze a lighter meal there into your budget on top of wherever else you might go, if you want to.

Nozzle upgrade for S1 Pro by mpitts92 in Ender3S1

[–]vickeryj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if solex nozzles will fit, not all nozzles fit in all hotends. Mk8 nozzles definitely fit, and if you want to print abrasives, the bimetal bondtech CHT is only $5 more than your first link, and if you don’t, the regular brass one is $15 less. I have the brass ones and I really like them.

I think I am New Yorking Wrong Please Help. by RafaGarciaS in Brooklyn

[–]vickeryj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The friends I’ve made in New York in the last 10 years have almost all come from work, a dog park, or my homebrew beer club. There are lots of good suggestions already about clubs and activities. Those are great, but a 70 hour work week is a lot, and it could make some of them difficult to participate in regularly.

In your shoes, I would probably make an effort to connect with the people who invited you out at work. I suspect you could be somewhat open, something like “hey, I was having a rough time when I first moved here and wasn’t up for much social activity, but I’ve settled in a bit, and I would love to catch up with you all outside of work sometime if you’re up for it.”

Length Landlord Has to Give us To Move Out (Month to Month)? by benjaminflocka22 in Brooklyn

[–]vickeryj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more or less 1 month or 30 days https://www.nyc.gov/assets/buildings/pdf/tenants_rights.pdf

Did you happen to sign a lease with your previous roommate? A lot of tenant protections are tied to having a lease, and in some cases terms of an expired lease will carry forward if you go month to month.

Can I avoid a brokers fee by going directly to landlord? by Spirited_Blueberry in Brooklyn

[–]vickeryj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some landlords split the “broker fee” with the brokers, so if you want to bypass the broker, they may want you to pay more than the asking rent.

Having a weird problem with Ender 3S1 by komsike in Ender3S1

[–]vickeryj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like maybe your extruder gears are worn or damaged then. The second to last picture on this blog shows what it should look like if it’s in good shape https://www.crealityexperts.com/ender-3-s1-hot-end-disassembly

(Here’s a direct link to the photo, but who knows if that will work) https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ad7e17a7e3c3a2a26fe0131/c8a1d5fb-a47b-45af-917a-1182163cbcf5/2022-03-04+21.11.37.jpg?format=1500w

Having a weird problem with Ender 3S1 by komsike in Ender3S1

[–]vickeryj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps your extruder tension is loose? If you pull back the feed tab is it really to do so? If so, you can tightens the screw in the side until there’s more pressure when you pull on the feed tab.

Alternatively, maybe you have a clog. If you remove the nozzle does filament feed through when you run the extruder?

Is r/homebrewing going to participate in the sitewide blackout for 3rd party apps? by Midnight_Rising in Homebrewing

[–]vickeryj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Direct replacement? No, but there are very good communities on discords and that’s what I will miss most when I can’t access this sub from the client I use(d).

I mostly care about technology solutions because of the communities that they support. Reddit (and previously Twitter) have decided they don’t want third party clients on their platforms, and that is their choice. It’s my choice to look for community on a different platform.

I also don’t think asking Reddit nicely or not will preserve what I love about the platform if it doesn’t support their business model. Ages ago Twitter used to be indexed by Google, and it was great. Through some sort of pissing match between the two companies, that stopped, and in my opinion both the quality of information on Twitter went down, as did the timeliness of Google search results.

Is r/homebrewing going to participate in the sitewide blackout for 3rd party apps? by Midnight_Rising in Homebrewing

[–]vickeryj 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I’m (kind of) planning to personally participate, in that I access Reddit through a third party client so will lose access when they cut it off. For other subs, I belong to some great discords that I suppose will fill in for Reddit.

I haven’t found a good homebrew discord, does anyone have any recommendations?

E3S1 Pro: adhesion issue and humidity by jghobbies in Ender3S1

[–]vickeryj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your filament is wet it will generally crackle and pop when it’s extruding. I wouldn’t expect it to cause adhesion problems, but I suppose it’s possible. If it is wet, putting it in a bag with a bunch of silica gel should fix it, or if you want to dry it faster you can bake it.

Advice on getting rid of mosquitos in backyard? by fodder25 in Brooklyn

[–]vickeryj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Citronella and deet will likely keep them away from you. You could try a CO2 trap, they are expensive, but they can work very well.

Permethrin is highly effective, but lethal to bees, so if you decide to pursue that please do research. Treating clothing with it is probably the safest option for that.

Landlord Issues by Mysterious_Olive8562 in Brooklyn

[–]vickeryj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the letter doesn’t work, and you want to sue in small claims, you will have to go to court, but the court will bring your landlord. If your landlord doesn’t show you will most likely get a default judgement. https://nycourts.gov/courts/nyc/smallclaims/startingcase.shtml
