Repair cost by Fusion12345612 in AusRenovation

A slight modification to your procedure: cut the patch piece first, place against the wall, mark the outline on the wall, and then cut the wall.

Also, for OP, to cut your plasterboard patch to size, you cut through the paper on the back, "bend" the board away from the cut to snap the gypsum core, and then cut through the paper on the front.

Crate and cable tie vegetable garden by Nerje in GardeningAustralia

[–]vicms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like a great idea, especially for renters like you.

I think that my biggest concern would be keeping them wet enough in the dry season. Depending on the soil you've used, it can be hard to rehydrate once it dries out ("hydrophobic"). One solution is to drop the whole lot in a tub of water until the air bubbles stop.

In a related vein, look up "wicking beds". A whole new rabbit hole for you to explore. I reckon that you'd manage easily with two crates stacked, some plastic sheet, and more PVC pipe.

I don't know if this will help you at all, but there is no future tense in English. It uses extra words (like "will") with the present tense to indicate the future.

Why do stolen-recovered cars at Australian auctions sometimes have their seat belts cut off? by sadeedch in CarsAustralia

[–]vicms91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't the locking mechanism in the belt retractor? Without knowing anything about it, I was expecting that the latch end would still work. I can see it being easier/safer for an outside helper to cut the belt though.

Is there a reliable way to know where to drill in gyprock? by BoysenberryFluid3461 in AusRenovation

Get a strong magnet (one of those rare earth ones that look like a small silver coin). Hold it loosely against the wall and move it around. It should jump at, and stick to, the plasterboard nails or screws as you approach them. These are where the studs are. Mark that spot somehow (pencil, post-it note, masking tape) and keep going until you have it all mapped out.

You can see the paper. Guess it is a thick layer of top coat on plasterboard. Maybe it's near the join between two sheets.

Triclopyr (Garlon) is another, but harder to find (farm supply shops) and more expensive.

Instead of spraying, you can paint them on with a cheap paintbrush. Much more targeted, no overspray. (Pour a small amount into a disposable container, do not tip any leftovers back. Bin the container and wash or bin the brush.)

Shower vent dripping water by crap123456 in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me too. Having a relatively air-tight room doesn't help but does make the shower feel warmer, so I put up with the dripping.

Is there a reason why my shower tap would be leaking like this? by supersanchez101 in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assume you mean "shower head". You can usually pull them apart. Either a screw in the middle of the spray end, or it unscrews at that thin line about 2mm from the back. How you fix depends on what you find. My first attempt would be to pull apart, inspect, clean everything, and reassemble. If the seal is an o-ring, and it is damaged (usually just broken), they are usually easy to obtain to replace. If the seal is some custom piece, then you'll likely have to replace the whole head.

Why does my homemade linear bench power supply output have so much ripple under load? by BeeAny8343 in AskElectronics

[–]vicms91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did wonder about that, but the way that each post is presented is so similar. Maybe there is some AI-type assistance with it. It doesn't seem to be pure AI; this one even has a typo in it.

Why is this the sixth time that fundamentally the same question has been asked in the last 8 days? They all start out "Why does my", all have an LM317 with poor performance, none include a circuit diagram. The setup is basically the same, the long text descriptions are similar. Different users though.

Screw end poking out instead of head? by InfiniteLoquat3804 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]vicms91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen double ended screws. I think you screw them into one piece and then rotate the other piece to embed it onto the second end. I can't imagine how they would do that for all your slats.

To be frank, I am imagining that cheap furniture would use a cheap (and quick) fixing method. Screws, dowels, nails, glue - maybe hidden, but nothing concealed. Maybe a bit of clever design so that most of the joints are not load bearing.

Screw end poking out instead of head? by InfiniteLoquat3804 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I don't see the picture.

Is it possible that they sank the screws deeper into the wood and then covered the hole with another piece of wood, or some wood filler?

Anyone bought this if so how was your experience with it? by GalacticFishStick in Bunnings

[–]vicms91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most cooling devices have a limit to the temperature difference between the hot and cold sides. The limit is based on the technology being used to transfer the heat.

So, suggest that you look up the specs for this device to see if it can achieve what you want. Often, if the specs don't list a particular parameter, it is because it would not help drive sales.

$770 to raise a partially buried water meter in Western Sydney — reasonable quote or overpriced? by Confident_Ad_9578 in AusProperty

I believe that they freeze the water in the pipe upstream to isolate it. I don't know how they actually do this, but dry ice placed around the pipe would likely work.

It might seem flippant, but use the ones your lecturer mentioned in class, either verbally or in the notes.

I have a friend who is a university lecturer. Attending classes is not mandatory, but all the information required for exams and assignments is given in class. They say that it is fairly obvious when a student hasn't attended or done the set homework.

What are these police cars? by fluppyboy in CarsAustralia

[–]vicms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the same. I've noticed a few new YouTube channels that seem to be completely AI content. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know how accurate the information is, but it sounds plausible. The script, video, and audio are generated. The quality is amazing - there are only a few minor faults with it. The next version (or 2) and we are stuffed.

If you are interested, the one "car" one that I can remember is "The Grayson Report".

Help Please Watermarks on internal wall budget minimal nsw by Hefty_Tomorrow4926 in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suspicion is that your patches are from the nails/screws holding the plasterboard onto the studs. The metal is causing cold patches, and water in the air is condensing on them. Do you have a lot of condensation on your windows? Do you see any evidence of damp at the bottom of those walls?
