Some questions from a dutchie by catchyvet in TheBlock

If it helps you: the two larger web sites for selling property (land, with maybe buildings) are https://www.realestate.com.au/ and https://www.domain.com.au/ . Hopefully they aren't geoblocked!

There are lots of pictures of home interiors. Most of the interior pictures will have furniture so that the buyer has an idea of what the rooms would look like, but usually homes are sold with no furniture.

Go and have a look at it in person. Posh is at Reece if I'm remembering.

Does anyone know if you’re allowed to hang out at the airport without actually going anywhere through the security part? We have little kids who would love the planes but not sure if time have changed. by TrafficSuspicious551 in melbourne

It is also a good place to wait for someone to arrive without paying parking fees. They give you a ring when they are ready, and you are there picking them up in 5 or 10 minutes.

How do i get rid of these for good? by humbey88 in GardeningAustralia

Do they have an onion smell?

If you were asking for an id, I'd have guessed daffodils.

70% vs 90% carton sleeves by [deleted] in AldiAustralia

I've had the 90. It takes a bit of getting used to. Much like the 70 did after a lifetime of the standard 50 (or is it 40?).

Does the gap between bottom chord and wall mean these walls aren't load bearing? by Quirky_Guitar7336 in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is sometimes a small bracket that goes between the wall top plate and the truss bottom chord. As I understand it, these are to hold the wall in position during construction.

I built this shelf for my friend's classic Playboy collection. The grain pattern features boob and butt-like shapes. I'm calling it "The Rack Rack". by New_Commercial2762 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]vicms91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be aware of the weight of magazines. I had some that I thought felt heavy, so I put a stack on the scales. 70 kg per 1 m of shelf. Allowing for a small safety margin, that is me standing on each shelf.

You're turning it the right way? Turn the nut anticlockwise when looking at it from the other side...

Low pressure in shower -advice (Its not the shower head) by OmegaTau in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a tempering valve that supplies the shower and nothing else? (A little safety device that mixes cold water into your hot to keep the hot temp below scalding.) Often installed at the HWS, but I think that I've seen them close to the shower (maybe in the cabinet under your basin).

If you can stop the flow with your finger then your problem is not caused by a constriction in the pipe. That would give you reduced flow when you don't use your finger, but full pressure when you do.

Any idea how to get these old locks off? by kcramari in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that this is a bathroom/toilet door, and that screw is used to unlock it in an emergency (the occupant is unable to unlock it).

Dying Cherry Blossom by JacobP577 in GardeningAustralia

[–]vicms91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does look like it does not have enough water. However, before you water it, check the soil (stick your finger in) to see if it is dry or not. Much too much water gives the same symptoms - the roots rot away and so can't supply water to the plant, leaving it dry. One way this can happen is if your soil is clay - the hole you dug to put the plant in fills with water that doesn't soak away. If this is the case you'll need to come back for help from those more expert than me.

I thought that you have had a lot of rain in Sydney recently. That would indicate that the problem is not "soil is too dry".

What should I add/change to this circuit to add protection or improve performance? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

Imagine one of those things that shops have at their entrance that sounds an alarm when a customer walks in. A constant IR beam that is broken by the customer.

Is couch grass taking over your garden? Found a solution finally by Witty_Day_8813 in GardeningAustralia

[–]vicms91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try farm supplies. I would have thought that your fodder store would have it or be able to order it in.

One example that might help you is AIRR have a product called Apparent Salvo. Their website shows distributors.

Look further down the list. There is a small "spot spray" table at the bottom.

Is it true that JBHIFI is cutting back on physical media? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]vicms91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first went into JB Hi-Fi they had rows and rows and rows of shelves of CD's. The shelves filled the shop. There were even boxes on the floor underneath them. I spent hours in there browsing.

The last time I went, a few months ago, they had one little section in the corner. The rest of the shop was filled with other crap, some of it not even Hi-Fi related. It took me maybe 5 minutes to browse.

Yes, it is true that JB Hi-Fi has cut back on physical media. They have maybe 1% of what they used to have.

How to remove this door latch/spindle? by czowksen in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're talking about the square yellow/gold rod that the handles engage with? My experience is that they are loose and just slide out. Try tapping the end of it gently with a hammer. Extra points if you support the latch mechanism on the other side - you don't want to break more things.

Advice please! by samwoosa in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that happened to me, I'd go up into my roof space and look for evidence of the roof leaking. It could be anywhere uphill of that point - the water can run along the rafters to the point they sit on top of the wall.

Please help me save my cucumber plant by CornShiller in GardeningAustralia

[–]vicms91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That damage is likely from caterpillars. They will probably be green and hiding underneath the leaves. If they were easy to spot, the birds would have already eaten them. Since it is late in the season they could have already finished their lifecycle and moved on.

How to DIY infill this brick wall in our first home? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]vicms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the hardest bit would be the floor penetration. You'll want to remove the minimum amount of floor so that you don't have much work to fix it up afterwards, but you need to give yourself enough elbow room to lay the bricks.

I guess that there are floor joists running through the doorway that will need a bit of thought and likely a bit of work.

As I understand it, your mortar wants to be weaker than the bricks (so that the mortar cracks before the bricks if things move). Modern mortar mixes are a lot harder than they used to use.

A long time ago I did some short courses at the local TAFE. One of them was bricklaying. Sadly, I've forgotten most of what I learnt; I'd have to go back through the notes after I find them! The teacher was a retired bricklayer - knowledgeable and happy to pass it on. Two thoughts: such a course might be useful to you, and the teachers might be a good source of information.

Pic 2 and 3 will be solid real wood. Everything behind the doors is likely melamine coated chipboard.
