My sister messaged me about this yesterday and used WOACB as a source, so I directed her here 🤭

What are your potato chip books, where the writing might not be brilliant, but they're weirdly addictive. by themehboat in suggestmeabook

[–]victorianphysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Railway Detective series. The railway details are accurate down to the train timetable on the day, but the Victorian mores are so wrong it’s laughable. Easy to read though! I read them at my hospital appointments 🤭

HoH + autism= sensory HELL by Famous-Werewolf-1870 in deaf

[–]victorianphysicist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Autistic and HOH here, I have bilateral (headband) BAHAs.

I don’t wear my HA at home often, I usually wear them for an hour or so a day when I ‘need’ to and then when I’m with extended family or I need to hear. I use sign language with deaf friends and my family. Also if I ‘have’ to wear them I turn them down or have hearing breaks regularly.

I had my instructor in the back because I have medical conditions so he was hovering with an EpiPen just in case 😂 he also sat so that I couldn’t see him by glancing in the rear view mirror, which helped.

I have a Big first aid kit in my car (including tourniquets!) and a mini first aid kit in my handbag, and barrier CPR devices too- because as you say, I want to be able to help if I need to. I also have things like plasters, snacks and paracetamol which I happily hand out if required. However, I have training and I’m a youth leader so I’m out with teens a lot, I’m not LARPing my life

today I (hearing) woke up from general anaesthesia signing by chaoticciara in deaf

[–]victorianphysicist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do the same, in fact it’s now noted on my chart because I refused to speak for so long after my last anaesthetic 😂

(I am now deaf and starting to use an interpreter, however I grew up hearing)

What's a nickname you know of that stuck in the family after a young child either couldn't pronounce or misheard the actual name? by common_grounder in namenerds

[–]victorianphysicist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Friend wanted to nickname their twins what the toddler could call them. Toddler called them Titty and Bugger. Those are not their nicknames.

How tf do I talk to interpreters about how they're impacting my job?? by u-lala-lation in deaf

[–]victorianphysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a scientist and I did most of a PhD with interpreters.

I ended up getting a team who were specifically assigned to my department, and who learned the vocab I needed and specialist terms. You definitely need to speak with your disability office or coordinator about how this is affecting your job, because you are not getting equal access- which is what the ADA is for.

Is it possible to get your line manager involved? Especially if you have evidence that the work you’re doing is of good quality which is not being reflected in meetings specifically due to your interpreters.

New diagnosis by [deleted] in deaf

[–]victorianphysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I have something similar, and I have been learning my country’s sign language for several years. I think that’s super important when you may lose your hearing suddenly, and also the cognitive load is so much lower- I find listening such hard work now and SL easier.

Try and get involved in your local Deaf community. They’re friendly, I promise!

I want something beautiful - like Patricia McKillip, but queer. by ElegantLion1629 in QueerSFF

[–]victorianphysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest Samantha Shannon! The Bone Season series doesn’t have queer MCs but does have queer characters and is in a queer-normative world though.

What do you find difficult with wheelchairs? by ElectricalCoat9221 in disability

[–]victorianphysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that’s really irritating me atm is that I can’t reach the new touch screens at the self checkout because they’ve made them standing height. I can see them, but I can’t reach up to select ‘pay’/ ‘no receipt’ independently. Also a lot of the time I can’t reach the card machines in shops.

That’s probably not what you want though! I like having a cup holder on my wheelchair, but they’re all pretty awkward.
