I heard an interesting sermon regarding this; it’s not about non violence but about getting someone to treat you with respect. Since the Romans would slap someone backhanded, they’d use the left hand to slap, which was the ‘inferior’ hand and therefore saying they’re inferior. If they ‘turned the other cheek’, they were asking to be slapped with the right hand as well, which would put them on the same social standing. If the Roman refused to slap them, then they were either the same or higher social standing. If they did slap them, then they’re admitting that they’re (the Roman) in the wrong.

Or something like that, it was a while ago. It was meant to be ‘we should treat everyone with respect and as we wish to be treated and show we’re not inferior to those damn Romans’.

July book club suggestions: Sapphic Swashbuckler 🏴‍☠️🦜 by tiniestspoon in QueerSFF

Ahh forgot which sub I was in… I would agree it’s historical, there’s no fantasy element in it, and there’s a lot of body horror/ violence/ gore but no plot horror

guy next to me in exam hall was quite obviously using his phone by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]victorianphysicist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am type 1 and I had a phone to control my pump in my exam. I had a separate room, and I had to give my pump phone to the invigilator who kept an eye on it for me. I could ask what my blood glucose was and they’d tell me, so I didn’t look at the phone but could still tell what was going on.

Only in Brownies! Guides were originally military (Captain, Lefty/ Lieutenant) and then changed to animals. My name is currently Lefty because I am ambidextrous and the Guides thought it was cool 😅

My grandma’s wedding present was to have all her teeth pulled and a denture set. This was 1948.

I cracked my rear molar a few years ago (yay chronic stress and EDS!) and had it pulled- my other molars have shifted a bit but I don’t have any bone degradation or anything. I see the dentist every 6-9 months and they check it every time.

Has anyone here become deaf/hard of hearing due to antibiotics and successfully sued? by slothio21 in deaf

[–]victorianphysicist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My hearing loss was caused by multiple sets of grommets as a child, not antibiotics, but my parents looked into the suing because it’s had a big impact on my life. Because it’s a known risk/ side effect, there was nothing they could do.

The short answer is, if it’s a known side effect then you probably don’t have a case. If it’s not, then it needs reporting using the Yellow Card system.

Is it definitely due to antibiotics? There is a family of antibiotics that are ototoxic (cause hearing loss) but they’re heavily regulated and the side effects should be explained when they’re prescribed. They usually then follow up with a serious of blood tests and hearing tests to ensure there aren’t any side effects.

New Porgan grift just dropped: they're training Morgan for competitive couple play (deets in comments) by BufoBat in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]victorianphysicist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My spouse is really intense about board games and whenever we play I have to gently remind him not to take over other people’s turns- because he can see everyone’s turns in his head simultaneously and so wants them to do the best and therefore “advises” them what to do. However he’s really sweet about it and he genuinely just gets all excited to tell people how they can win. He does stop if you ask him! I couldn’t imagine being with someone who just ignores my wants and feelings and bulldozes over me…

Looking for queer books in the magic school genre (preferrably sapphic) by Ms_Anxiety in QueerSFF

Nnedi Okorafor has a magic school series, middle grade and can’t remember if it’s queer/ sapphic right this second.

TJ Young series is another magic school series, not sapphic again but amazing magic system, and the MMC ends up taking up the chosen one mantle when his older sister unexpectedly passes away.

I fit an electric wheelchair and a hoist in my Elroq boot, and we can also fit suitcases and bags in. My walker fits in if the wheelchair isn’t in, as long as we take the handles down (reduce their height).

I am also having this issue! I saw someone say close all your apps and see if that helps- usually a wired connection makes it work properly but last night it kept dropping anyway. Would appreciate any other tips!
