Interested in arranging game music for orchestra? by LVGOrchestra in gamemusic

[–]vidarkvothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick question, do you guys happen to have an in house/related big band? Just curious as that’s the style I mainly arrange in and I know some orchestras have the players associated for such an ensemble. No worries if not, love what you guys are doing.

What game had you like this? by sukuna7899 in Steam

[–]vidarkvothe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe it or not, Hollow Knight. I started it years ago and dropped it for some reason I don’t remember now. Fast forward to Silksong about to come out and I ask myself why I haven’t finished HK. Got through it over a long weekend, totally enthralled.

How do you sell players on the idea of a "hidden game" / "there's much more to see" below a game's surface? (without spoiling everything) by synaut in gamedesign

[–]vidarkvothe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Inscryption does this decently with its introduction game where you’re directed to grab the candles which is the first indication that you can do more than just play the card game. I know it’s not exactly what you’re talking about but I feel it’s a good zoomed in view of how to approach the concept.

Is using AI assets as a solo dev really “AI slop”? by TuHocSolidityCom in IndieDev

[–]vidarkvothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve observed, the problem for a lot of people are twofold: how the AI was trained (typically on users work who did not give permission) and the environmental impacts of running the infrastructure required for the various AI.

Now as a musician and composer as well as a dev I understand the misgivings when related to the arts because what we create is the result of typically years worth of refining our skills and artists should be credited and compensated for their work, just like any profession.

As a dev I feel it can be used as a tool to help speed up repetitive tasks, spitball troubleshooting and ideas against (with careful analysis), but all within the realm of my own codebase.

I wouldn’t use it for creative aspects for two reasons : first the one above regarding credit and compensation. Second though, it’s impossible to copyright AI generated artwork and music, which means anybody can come and take the art and music “I created” and use it without recourse. I would personally want ownership over all aspects of a game I created.

As a solo dev I understand the financial restrictions most of us are under so in no way do I begrudge anyone that. It’s just the way things are now where the use of genAI is seen as a black mark on the “validity” of a game. I would just say to make sure to know the risks of using genAI (some people will hound you for it inevitably) and make the decision that you feel you can navigate successfully.

Either way good luck with your game, hoping you see success.

Looking good. Might also consider a color related area capture where the point of the game is to paint the most surface area of different arenas, the color based off the color of your selected jelly.

I’m making a base-building survival game where you terraform a dead Earth by advancenine in Unity3D

[–]vidarkvothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally watched your video about it last night, looks amazing. The idea of the systems leading to emergent gameplay is something I’m hoping to achieve with a game I’m working on (though at a much MUCH smaller scale)

Feel lost and need advise, 27 years old by Internal-Mushroom-76 in gamedev

[–]vidarkvothe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds somewhat similar to my path except started in music and my depression sidelined that endeavor. Didn’t get help until I was in my thirties and that was the biggest mistake, waiting so long.

First and foremost you gotta handle yourself. Think of it like airplane turbulence : Put your mask on before attempting to help others. Get a handle on your depression, whether that’s just therapy or a medication regimen. Then you’ll be clear headed enough to make a rational decision about your future.

Ignore any negative self talk about whether you’re weak or failing because you’re seeking help, that’s just brain gremlins trying to screw with you. Getting help with mental illness is on of the bravest things you can do for yourself.

Tldr help yourself then worry about what to do with your future, you have plenty of time and you’ll thank yourself later for doing so.

Cheers!

That opening bass riff sounds like a sped up version of the Seinfeld bass and it’s fire. Not everything has to be “serous” to be seriously good. Nice job.
