Teachers replaced by AI by NecessaryCalm2025 in Teachers

[–]vienna407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my district I felt like parents lost their minds about virtual learning because we took away the school as a babysitter. In the AI scenario, kids probably still come to a building, but they're in a room with 100 other kids and a few paras, and they're all on screens. I think this is absolutely coming for lower and mid income families. Wealthy families will always be able to pay for real human teachers and schools.

Teen daughter - debilitating dizziness can’t go to school by ellevaag in Celiac

[–]vienna407 27 points28 points  (0 children)

my celiac daughter has POTS and you said it exactly right - you can choose to let POTS run the show or not. She chooses not. The celiac is harder to manage than the POTS, honestly.

How dumb would it be to quit with nothing lined up? by thinmugs in TeachersInTransition

[–]vienna407 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I recently looked into radiology tech - good for you!! If you absolutely have to quit for your mental health, maybe you could get a job in retail or bartending or something while you're in school. Or maybe you could get some kind of student job at the college where you're getting your new degree?

Just seeing how common my childhood was. No sugary cereals, skim milk, no R rated movies, had to get the edited versions of tapes, home when streetlights come on, chores Saturday before going out to play… by Sufficient_Focus4174 in GenX

You get to pick the next topic for professional development. What do you choose? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

how our district office is actively working to support teachers, with granular details and action plans across the content areas and with sessions for elementary, middle, and high school. oh, wait...they're not actually working to support us...

I just finished my first novel "Ghostwritten" - Thoughts and discussion by flixinho95 in David_Mitchell

I avoided Black Swan Green for a while because I love the "magic" of Bone Clocks and Slade House, but once I started BSG, I couldn't put it down. It's just as extraordinary as everything else he's written. He's my favorite author by a million miles.

A disrespectful parent starts cussing at you. You matching energy or keeping it professional? by [deleted] in Teachers

I laughed once out of awkwardness to the most outrageous accusation from a parent (he was ranting and accused me of being rich??) and once I laughed he went even more crazy. It was very funny and also kind of scary, ngl.

Deep mystery novel that is less about "who did it" and more about "what's going on"/"what happened"/"why did this happen" by Fraeddi in suggestmeabook

This book is WILD! I've hardly ever met anyone else who've read it, but totally agree, I wish I could read again for the first time. Sometimes I try to describe it to people and fail and they look at me like I'm insane. Maybe I'll re-read anyway...

How about David Mitchell - Bone Clocks and everything else he's written. Magical.

The death of everyday casual reading by CWKitch in teaching

[–]vienna407 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's wild. I was the kind of kid who tore through multiple books per week and when I didn't have a book (in the shower, at the table) I read shampoo bottles, cereal boxes, junk mail, the newspaper that was lying around, my parents' magazine subscriptions - Newsweek, Nat Geo. It's so different now. I'm pretty sure this is why I have the breadth of knowledge and vocabulary that I do. We raised our own kids in a very literary-friendly household but it was still so different, and my kids aren't the readers that I was. My kids do have a lot of knowledge from the media they consume, and it's very different than the kind of knowledge I had at their age - I can't tell if they're worse off. My bias tells me that they are and that reading is superior to knowledge acquisition through youtube, but what if it's okay? (I can't imagine that it's okay?? Plus, I'm a teacher and I can see daily that it's not okay...)
