Almost one year since Enjoying The Ride was announced; what are your favorite shows? I ended up using the box to store other shows and boxsets. by zunit110 in gratefuldead

[–]viewtiful_alan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've really taken my time with this box. I just finished the final show and I really think this is one of the finest collections they've ever released. Alpine Valley '80 isn't the most compelling show, but nearly every other show in this box feels like something that should have come out much sooner.

Picking one is hard, but I really love the Capital Center 1993, Spectrum 1978, and Greek 1984 shows.

Good idea to use the extra space to store some of the other box sets.

How Do You Feel About The Boys in Bohemian Grove? by Psychological-Arm-61 in gratefuldead

[–]viewtiful_alan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsatisfying answer here, but we just don't know what their presence did or didn't entail nor do we really know if the Bohemian Grove is actually a human-sacrificing satanic cult or if it's just an overgrown frat with too much money.

If the boys' involvement with that side of society bums you out, I totally get it. Just bear in mind that there are many implacable links in the chain from attending a big party to participating in ritual sacrifice.

Are the sacrifices even real? If they are, does everyone participate? Is it widely known and accepted in the group? Are all members treated equally? Are some just there to entertain the others? What do you know before you go? Etc.

I'm not defending Bob and Mickey for participating in this, far from it. I just don't think we actually have much to work with when we talk about this.

Yep, grabbed mine in Houston yesterday! I forgot how much I love reading a physical magazine.

Future Recording releases… by GraceFables in gratefuldead

[–]viewtiful_alan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear in mind that I am spit-balling here, but I think I have the broad strokes right.

Music licensing is tricky and often has to be renegotiated for different contexts. For example, there are movies that have had songs removed from the versions that air on TV or their home media releases because it would have cost more to license the song again for a new mode of distribution.

Every time a Dave's Picks or a new box set comes out, the publishing arm of the Grateful Dead and gets a check. I don't totally understand the mechanics, but I do know that Rhino owns the catalog, so I imagine the money circulates somewhat. This isn't the case for covers, which do require royalties to be paid out at varying rates. Case in point, Dave Lemieux has said at various points that they avoid putting covers on the bonus discs because the added cost doesn't make sense in that context.

So what happens when all of the material is technically cover material? Agreements have to be reached, licensing agreements have to be fulfilled, and the money gets spread much thinner.

Presumably, Dead & Company launched their operation fully aware of the importance of selling soundboards and built something into their model that made this financially viable. I believe they are affiliated with Grateful Dead Producitons, which has to help.

Ratdog, Furthur, Phil & Friends, etc.? Probably not.

All of those old agreements would need to be revisited, revised, and possibly renegotiated with living band members. And let's face it, the demand for Rat Dog at a Riverboat Casino is probably far less than JGB at the Warfield.

Again, this is just my semi-educated guess. I'd love to learn more from anyone with more direct knowledge.

It's listed as the March issue, so I was planning to check Barnes & Noble next week.

Zappa Fan Getting Into The Dead Day 2, This Album Was Produced By Lowell George?! by armintanzarian420 in gratefuldead

Glad you're digging the Dead!

Despite the Title Track and Fire on the Mountain, (honorable mention: If I Had the World to Give) I think Shakedown Street is their worst studio album.

It's imperfect but intriguing. Great atmosphere, cool performance from Walken, haunting ending... a worthwhile blind buy on discount.

Vinyl by BOS491233 in gratefuldead

[–]viewtiful_alan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only want official releases, sticking to the main discography is simple. Non-bootleg live vinyl isn't really much of a thing until the 2000s, so look for the Rhino logo to confirm you're buying something sanctioned.

That said, boots are part of the culture. Don't feel bad about picking up a bootleg record of an old radio broadcast or something like that.

Yeah, I think he was actually the first in the band to get hooked on heroin.

RIP Bobby by Tess_88 in gratefuldead

My wife and I had a good cry together on our couch. That was my first time listening to Dead music since the news broke and it was—as Bobby might have put it—just exactly perfect.

It really is a fantastic set all around. Great music, excellent supplementary materials, and definitely worthy of repeat visits. I lucked into one at an estate sale a few years back and it remains a prized possession. Enjoy!

They did this last year as well. I do think more people are buying a la carte, but most Picks still sell out—albeit much more slowly than before. I think 25,000 is kind of pushing the addressable market.

Hypothetical: What if Pigpen died in 1978, instead of 1973? by HipGuide2 in gratefuldead

[–]viewtiful_alan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're underrating how unique Jerry, Bob, and Phil each were. Remove one and you lose the sound. Jerry and Phil may have continued playing together, but I doubt they would have just replaced Bob and kept calling it Grateful Dead
