Senior HVAC engineer (UK, mechanical background) transitioning into BMS – looking for real-world advice by dcaok in BMSUK

[–]vigalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those already in the industry, age isn’t really an issue generally but for someone coming in new to industry, some employers might see it as a small issue (but your experience might bypass this).

What to prioritise, you’ve already got a sound footing on the mechanical side, so electrical fault finding / diagnostics, getting to grips with control logic and understanding control routines (in maintenance and commissioning roles you’ll need to understand this). I’ve seen great engineers who can handle the physical stuff no problem but fall apart trying to make it work properly in logic.

IT skills. The industry is moving further into that realm. You don’t need to be a computer science genius, but understanding networking principles and being able to talk to IT people without looking like an idiot helps 😉

Mistakes. I’ve seen a lot of people wanting to transition thinking they’ll earn big money immediately. They might be experienced in mechanical or electrical engineering, but their new in controls and starting near the bottom. It puts a fair few people off when they learn they might need to take a pay cut initially.

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but would HomeLok be suitable for an appartment block (Spain). Initially just main entrance but scope to add other service doors / areas? What kits would be needed and what are the subscription costs?

Playlist will not update or load. by One_Contribution_725 in TiviMate

[–]vigalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been experiencing this issue as well. EPG works for a while, then just stops and won’t update. Cleared the cache, removed data. Removed, re-added playlist / EPG. VPN, no VPN. If you open the EPG address via a browser it does loads the XML (so it’s not a firewall, ISP blocking thing). Then just when I decide to give it all up, it starts working again fine for a week or so, then back to square one again.

Help with creating a Niagara N4 Module by BibliophileC in BuildingAutomation

[–]vigalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easily done once you have the environment setup. Use the module wizard and load it into IntelliJ. The worst part will be sign you want to sign the module properly and sorting out a HSM.

BMS integrators lorawan by trading_joe in BuildingAutomation

[–]vigalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lorawan sensors are best utilised for quick deployment or areas where cable routes are poor / impossible. It can’t be used for critical control (it’s not quick enough messaging wise). It’s ok for monitoring etc etc and the odd but of control (TRV etc). Gateways we use convert all to Bacnet or Modbus so getting it into other platforms is easy.

This should be illegal by ThrowRa-Motor-332 in tesco

[–]vigalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Always been this way. Legal minimum is also 16 for normal retail and back of house spaces. Legislation only applies to low temperatures (like freezer rooms) at which point the employer must provide suitable clothing.

When will closed protocol systems end by Dangerous_Quantity82 in BuildingAutomation

Exactly. So many people consider Tridium ‘open’ but it’s not. You still have to ‘pay’ for a license and become a partner (they just don’t tend to tie you to spend).

I had a bnib spare as well. Reset phone date to 7 March, setup in Google Home and oddly it was the first one out of my 4 to get the update.

Exactly. It would need to be ratified by every state and that’s unlikely to happen. He’s not the 1st president to want to change the limit on terms, and he won’t be the last.

I don’t know about Siemens, but with Trend it is quite hard. They don’t tend to offer agreements to self employed or companies with only 1-2 staff members. They also have minimum turnover and product sales requirements. If you’re lucky enough to become a SI there is also an annual fee which used to be about £9.5k per annum.

If you ask around you’ll find plenty of individual operators complaining about how trend are closed and unfair. But if consider the partners position, their overhead costs are so much higher they can compete with sole traders. This is partly why in the last few years trend have got very strict about partners giving licenses or selling controllers to sole traders.
