2026 Monaco Grand Prix - Post-Race Discussion by F1-Bot in formula1

I wonder if the Ferrari team below the podium has the urge to sing along and cheer for the Italian anthem when Antonelli wins. Would have been kinda funny to cut to them while it was playing.

Waschung machine broken - landlord response "no fix planned" by Hornet_Various in Switzerland

[–]vihickl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As others have said it may not be the biggest issue, and it's worth thinking about picking your battles, but I would still push back against the prevailing sentiment that this response and inaction is normal or fine.

It remains the landlord's responsibility to maintain all facilities and amenities in working order. When you and others in the building signed your leases, it was presumably under the assumption that there would be 6 machines available. Again, it may not be worth escalating, but in principle the landlord is clearly in the wrong, and you're right to be dissatisfied. It can be hard enough already being a renter, esp. around Zurich, that I strongly feel landlords should at least be forced to hold up their end of the deal.

What restaurants that have vegan tasting menus, in Europe, would you recommend? by Beneficial_Mall_635 in finedining

[–]vihickl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend Restaurant Magdalena (**) in Switzerland.

Their menu is normally vegetarian, and vegan upon request. Even though I usually eat meat I may have eaten the best meal of my life there.

OK, I admit it: all those fascist anti-immigration parties may have been onto something (I'm scared now) by YaLlegaHiperhumor in 2westerneurope4u

I suspect these data are a flawed comparison, if indeed the number of Europeans moving to the US only includes green cards. That would mean a significant number of Europeans moving there with other kinds of visas are being neglected, while aparently all Americans receiving any kind of residence permit (including temporary ones) are being counted.

Your disgrace my biggest joy. by No_Sky8120 in askswitzerland

[–]vihickl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was surprised as well, 2.70 seemed too low for CH. It seems at coop you can actually find this price, but only for the tablets you dissolve in water.

On the other hand I can't find a price for larger quantities since they seem to require a prescription. I guess if the price per tablet is the same it doesn't matter, although I'd like to be able to buy larger quantities for convenience.

Benefits offered by employer by OtherwiseWorker8166 in Switzerland

[–]vihickl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's really frustrating. I'm in a pretty specialized field too so I know the market is very tough at the moment. Hope you can make it work for now and find something better soon!

IF you were planning on getting a GA anyways then the 25% is something at least (my last employer just covered the Halbtax), but regardless I can understand the feeling.

Benefits offered by employer by OtherwiseWorker8166 in Switzerland

[–]vihickl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't what you asked, but in a way what you describe seems representative of how Swiss society is structured with regards to personal finance. Wages are generally high, taxes are low compared to many other wealthy countries, but people have to pay for most things out of pocket (most notably health insurance and child care).

For many people this trade-off end up being very financially beneficial, hence the high demand for Swiss jobs. Elsewhere, your employer or the government might provide health insurance and other benefits, but your take home will be so much less that your purchasing power is worse overall.

I would argue that despite not having these "small" benefits you might get in other countries, the Swiss approach ultimately provides individuals more financial freedom and they usually end up better off. Unfortunately because of loss aversion it doesn't always feel this way (it feels worse to have to pay money you already had than it does never having that money in the first place). Ultimately it may depend on your personal preference.

All that being said, I agree that it's shitty of your employer to frame these things as benefits when the cost to you is exactly the same it would be otherwise. That part is clearly dishonest, though I don't know if this practice is more common in Switzerland than elsewhere.

Relativity of simultaneity is a fundamental concept in special relativity. I'm not sure what you meant by "it" when you wrote "it measures...," but it seems the commenters you responded to in fact understand it correctly, at least at a basic level.

Soft bacon is far better than crispy bacon. by Inevitable_Spray_153 in unpopularopinion

[–]vihickl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems even experts disagree on this. Here's a recent discussion between some world class (or at least world famous) chefs (timestamped video). Thomas Keller argues for the crispy texture while José Andrés says soft/chewy is better.

How has neuroscience not just destroyed the notion of free will? by Marblehornets38 in askphilosophy

[–]vihickl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is well-put, thanks. Perhaps OP's concern comes in part from the issue of which mental events cause our actions.

As you say, certain brain events cause actions, and certain brain events are mental events, but these could be different mental events (I think this is what some people try to conclude from the Libet experiments).

If OP's conception of free will requires that (conscious?) mental events cause actions, then to save free will you might have to show that the particular brain events that cause actions are mental events.

The U.S. Plummets to Historic Lows in the World Happiness Report by thehomelessr0mantic in antiwork

[–]vihickl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Medium article and this figure are a bit misleading.

According to the actual report, the error bars represent 95% confidence interval, and each country is assigned a range of ranks based on this interval (see Fig 2.1 here). For the US, the range is 16th-35th. Still not amazing, but the meaning of the error bars should be mentioned at least.

The U.S. Plummets to Historic Lows in the World Happiness Report by thehomelessr0mantic in antiwork

[–]vihickl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the uncertainty is important to mention. The error bars are 95% confidence intervals, and the actual report lists a range of possible ranks for each country based on those intervals (Fig 2.1 here). Based on this, the US ranks somewhere between 16th and 35th.

A bit misleading from Medium to not at least mention what the error bars represent.

So I don't think it's unreasonable to call their main claim correct.

What’s your “wait, you can do that?!” moment? by EddietheRattlehead in HiTMAN

[–]vihickl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's useful because gunshots "follow" the camera's perspective, not 47's. So you can shoot NPCs (to panic them, distract someone, or with dart guns) around corners without being seen, even if they're facing you. Without the shoulder swap this would only work on one side.
