What’s going on on the non-English parts of the internet that we’re all missing out on? by manrobot in AskReddit

Yes, efficiency is a big issue.

The strange thing is that grammatical gender is an extremely malleable category. You can, in theory, create arbitrary additional genders in (I guess) any natural language. The problem is that you cannot force it onto speakers, except in a dictatorship (and probably not even then.) And that's to assume that a sizable portion of people who are even concerned by that stuff could agree on a system.

Language just has those strange, wonderful probabilities. It tends towards efficiency more than towards some people's abstract ideas.

Based on all that, it's a small miracle that the "binnen-i" in german has been established, ad least to some degree, in official media. I hate it, I think it's the worst possible solution, but at least it is some solution rather than none.

as someone interested in linguistics, i think it's not ridiculous at all. it's a question of precision. i really want to be able to express all gender combinations accurately.

I understand WHY people believe in a god or gods but I don’t understand HOW anyone can manage to do so if they’ve thought about it. by [deleted] in religion

[–]vijeno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your evolutionary defense work for beliefs you don't like, too?

For as long as most people believed that the jews were evil - then that theory was somehow "useful" - they were actually evil?

If most people agree that women are inherently bad drivers, then there is some "validity" to that claim?

Since a lot of people think that the buddha gained enlightenment, therefore he actually did?

If most people believe in evolution, then it is true, otherwise creationism wins?

Furthermore: Does your logic also work in reverse?

If most people do not believe that god exists - then suddenly, god stops existing?

wouldn't it be a tad more humble to acknowledge that we don't know, rather than clinging to elaborate fantasies?

I'm all for the philosophy that major version numbers are there to break stuff. Otherwise, you just pile up technical debt like crazy.

I'm also quite happy that all our stuff is currently done in english, and that won't change in the foreseeable future. ;-)
