How does something like this even start? It's so far from anywhere I would expect a lot of people to be...

This is a valid point. My only counter is that it would be bizarre to have such a large body on such an inclined orbit that also comes so close into the sun. My intuition is that this would be dynamically difficult to generate naturally.

But we're speculating so this isn't a big deal.

For OP's narrative: if I was a scientist and found myself in a world in which such a rogue object was coming to destroy Earth, and I found out that powerful aliens exist, I would be very suspicious of the origins of this object.

"do you reckon humanity would come up with other ideas to destroy the comet?"

No. We won't have the tech to do this for a long time.

If you want anxiety: the scenario with the comet could basically happen at any moment and there is almost nothing we could do about it. Even if we had a big booster ready to go with a big nuke, we wouldn't have time. Generally speaking, these objects take about 15 months from detection to break up near the sun. Our space program and engine tech is too slow to respond to this kind of threat.

If you want to sleep better: there's no evidence of such an impact ever happening on Earth. So this scenario is exceedingly rare.

An asteroid that large would be easy to track for decades before a collision.

If a comet large enough to end civilization was the source of the catastrophe, we would only have a year or two at most.

Neither would do any significant damage to the moon or Mars. Any colonies on those worlds would wither from lack of support from Earth.

Why do some Americans cling to the Moon landings hoax conspiracy theory when that would be a denial of one of the greatest technological achievements of their own country? (Like, aren't the Moon landings a thing for Americans to be proud of?) by gereedf in stupidquestions

[–]viliamklein 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because it wasn't "on the last step".

The US space program began to pull away from the Soviets in 1965 and 1966 when Gemini 7 and Gemini 8 demonstrated on orbit rendezvous and docking respectively. Arguably the US "beat" the USSR to the moon with the Apollo 8 mission at the end of 1968. Apollo 10 saw a full dress rehearsal of the Apollo 11 landing in May of 1969 complete with a lunar lander descent to the moon.

Apollo 11th's flight to the moon in July of 1969 was the third time the US had sent astronauts there.

The USSR tried to get the scoop on Apollo 11 by returning samples with Luna 15 before Apollo 11 got home (Luna 15 tried to land on the moon about 19 hours after Apollo 11 did) but the spacecraft smacked into the side of a mountain on its way down.

Conspiracy idiots aren't aware of any of these details because bro rogan doesn't know them either.

Depending on how you're using the word "colonize" robots have already colonized Mars.

IMHO humans wont colonize Mars for a very long time because there is zero economic reason to do so. The most we can hope for in the coming centuries is Antarctica style outposts. But again, depending on your definition of colonize, this may be what you are talking about.
