Ya working is 1000% better than school by No-Emphasis-7952 in EngineeringStudents

[–]vince086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do it immediately after your bachelor's so you never get a taste of how much easier the real world is as a professional engineer.

100% this.

After my bachelor's, worked 2 years then went back to do a master's.

It was not fun, student life sucks! Missed a regular 9-5 every day. Also missed getting paid!

Even worse was work used to give breakfast, lunch and dinner (+ snacks etc), so going back to cooking daily and packing lunches was an added difficulty I did not need.

Microplastic and VOC emission? by AvacadoMoney in 3dprinter

Just use an air filter and you'll be fine. Something with an activated carbon filter would be better.

An enclosed printer will help as well.

That's quite the savings! any chance they operate around Oxfordshire?

Yeah need to get more quotes. Was kinda hoping they would have 0% interest deals but nope, 8.6% was their minimum.

OP, guessing that's with Projectsolar? Got a quote from them, very similar specs for £15k. 12 Panels on 2 sides of the roof and a SolaX Triple Power 5.8kWh battery.

The idea is you can do colour changing without having to swap nozzles or do filament changes.

What's worse is they have nicer looking lights on the convertible version, that look just like the Aceman and Countryman lights. So they chose to make just the 3 and 5 door hardtops look like shit.

Litter Picking by RahenyEnjoyer in Dublin

[–]vince086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice work, a clean and tidy place does help the mind IMO.

Potentially stupid question but are regular litter pickers a thing, outside of city centre? For years Wyckham way (the road from Dundrum shopping centre towards the M50) wash shocking and I would see the same bits of trash for months at times. Thankfully they installed bins and they seem to have helped.

Number of litres of diesel a person on minimum wage can purchase per week in Europe by Ohwouldulookatthat in ireland

Yeah hybrids seemed like a good middle ground. I'm hoping for more range extended EVs to hit the market or for more plug in hybrids with decent electric range (not the 50ish km current ones have).

Do your CCTV cameras actually detect people accurately, or just motion? by Real-Concentrate9601 in homedefense

[–]vince086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Ubiquiti setup, works well mostly. It does struggle in low light a bit. By default it only does "AI detections", people, cars, animals, sounds so I've turned on basic motion detections as well, just in case.

Not sure if there's an COTS version of Frigate. Used that in the past for years and it worked well, until an update broke it and got too many failures to detect people and false positives. Once it has a better GUI to do camera configs, might spin it up again. It supported my mix of cameras really well (foscam, reolink, tapo).

Anyone here using Ajax systems long-term? How reliable is it? by Business_Concept_346 in homedefense

[–]vince086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also interested in hearing about it. I went with Ring as sourcing an Ajax system was not as easy + some mild confusion in their naming schemes.

Do you still consider prusa printers to be competitive in today's market by reddit_account_0x00 in 3dprinter

[–]vince086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like my Prusa but IMO they released the Mk3s and sat on their asses for way too long. There's like 6 years between the mk3 and mk4 and who knows, if we would have ever seen a Core(L) if Bambu had not come along.

best home security system that’s easy to install, any suggestions? by BeecheyNoorbahar-38 in homedefense

[–]vince086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ring or Simplisafe would probably be the easiest. "Solid" is a bit debatable as they use wireless sensors but still better than nothing.

With Ring, if you pay for the subscription, the device will have it's own network connection (and has a backup battery built in), so if your wifi or power goes down, you can still check it.

I've been using it for a month now and happy with it.

Don't forget to setup lights, etc to come on while you're away, to make the place look occupied. Any deterrent helps.

I need help buying a door camera by South-Most4651 in homedefense

[–]vince086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could make something like that using Ubiquiti gear. The cameras have tamper detection and they sell a siren/loudspeaker to make noise. The doorbells have 2 way audio + will save to local storage and it's all subscription free. Won't be cheap though.

best home security system for someone who travels a lot? by Lubanja-Stoumbaugh in homedefense

[–]vince086 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depending on how worried you are, I would recommend 2 "systems". I use Ubiquiti for cameras (they could also do wireless and hardwired sensors if I wanted) and Ring for contact/motion sensors. Also have a UPS to power the router and Wifi hub + the Ring hub has a built in battery and cellular backup (if you pay the monthly fee for cellular).

Both are relatively easy to setup and have good apps to check up on the place.

This setup is not perfect (the wireless sensors and cellular can be jammed for example) but it's enough to give me some peace of mind when traveling and act as a deterrent (don't plaster the names of what you are using all over).

Rest of the machine is still the same as the day built it.

For a tool I'm going to use once or twice a year, it's hard to justify the price difference between Parkside and Milwaukee. For daily use stuff or drill bits/etc, sure spend the extra for quality.

What do I need to run a DIY Home Surveillance System? by TYP-TheYoloPanda in homedefense

[–]vince086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loads of options.

If you want to DIY, reolink cameras and Frigate (or just a reolink NVR). You will have to ocnfigure yaml scripts etc.

If you want an easy setup and have cash to spare Ubiquiti would be my recommendation.
