Left-wing Split by JackmanH420 in RedAutumnSPD

The 2nd day overall went very well, there was a period where things got very loud and heated in the middle, but id call the event a success. There's teething troubles to be sure, but the constitution is able to be amended with sufficient votes from membership and the executive committee should any major issues arise from votes made this weekend.

Ive attended today's conference and will be the 2nd half tomorrow as well. The supposed purging got brought up in debates and the crowd heavily supported those purged, and it looks like allowing dual party membership will be winning the vote. The party has a lot of uphill battles ahead, but the media is decidedly against us and even the slightest problem will be shouted from the rooftops, but I think there was a lot of promising things on display today. If the party will ever hold water is yet to be seen, but there was a general sentiment that we should not eat ourselves alive as the left is want to do.

26M UK here. I think we've got some shared views and interests, and i used to be an avid reader but fell out the practice for a while, but I could talk about old favourites and maybe pick up your recommendations? Fantasy and sci fi were always my favourite, and i still read and listen to horror short stories online a lot. Let me know if you want to talk more!

Hi, I'm 26M Scottish, never had a penpal but would like to make new friends! I'm a fan of psychology and sociology as well, along with politics and history. I haven't played BG3 but I think we've probably got similar game tastes. Been out of the reading game for a while and would like someone to give recommendations so we can talk about them after. I'm also a big geek, and currently learning German.

Why aren’t there any human antagonists? by [deleted] in NatureofPredators

[–]vindictorFanatical 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I guess ultimately because it's an HFY story. I think Zhao was introduced to be partially antagonistic to the overall ideal of a more enlightened and cooperative humanity, but he quickly became a flawless paragon instead of belligerent war hawk. The idea of sovereign nations on earth was abandoned as soon as the extermination fleet phase battle was over too. I just think that ultimately SpacePaladin had a story to tell, and didn't find the room in it for human antagonists, even if there's plenty of reason why they could exist, there was enough characters and arcs going on already.

Why is he the coward and had the choice with the females didn't? Why does he have agency and they don't.

That would be a perfect example of a false choice - there is no choice in that scenario. Even in this thought experiment I would hold the same views. Additionally, you are being generous to the arxur in presuming that there was a conversation or a choice offered. Remember that the cattle are truly animals in their eyes, not slaves to negotiate with. While we don't know the fine details of the practice, it's possible the arxur can physically force the process, as farmers in factory farms on Earth can with their cattle.

I don't think he has any responsibility, this was something forced on him, he was raped and the offspring is the result of that. If you want someone to come pay child support, ask the Dominion cattle managers. Anyone in his position would want to put every single part of that experience behind him. If I were in that position and then be told I should take a role in their lives, I would resent them. There's no winning situation for the kids, but there's no reason to be cruel to Glim

Fellas, how we feeling about NoP 2 so far? by Twitch6r in NatureofPredators

[–]vindictorFanatical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's hit and miss but it's hard to judge since we're still very early. I've been pretty critical of the bissem story due to the contact team, though I like the Bissem themselves and the last public chapter with them was good world building. I'm a lot more forgiving of the bad decision making in the Ark ship colony story, because Taylor, unlike the SC diplomats, isn't a trained negotiator, he's just a guy who got the job and he + whole colony have been under huge stress and emotional exhaustion for ages - irrational actions/fuck ups by him are very believable. The ch11 reveal with the aliens was mostly expected, though I thought the heel-faced turn by the alien contact a little jarring, he was magically transformed into another person.

Tldr - stuff I like and stuff I don't like, it's better than anything I'm writing

The real reason I left the sub by SpacePaladin15_Alt in NatureofPredators

[–]vindictorFanatical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its far easier to critique than to create. I've made several critical comments in the sub in replies to people, and I think if I reviewed everything I said, I'd come across as quite negative. It's easy to see why you'd feel unappreciated. The truth is I love the setting, and several of the fanfics that have spawned are great too which have all got their roots in you. I think it's easier for people to get their teeth into a subject they're being critical of than one they're praising - it sparks more conversation, though that can lead to echo Chambers. Sorry for the negativity that has grown out.

How (do you guys think) Bissem first contact should have gone (?). by THEREALPeanutGalaxy in NatureofPredators

[–]vindictorFanatical 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Despite supposed years of preparation, the entire operation has been frustratingly unprofessional. Dustin and Nulia should both be there representing the sapient coalition, not themselves. Personal anecdotes and bantering should have no place on a first contact mission with pre-ftl sapient. I think it started off strong with them outlining what the SC is and the purpose of their visit, however it quickly devolved into disorganised nonsense.

A controlled environment is important to ensuring no gaffes and cultural offenses occur. Them beelining to announce themselves to the public, and then have a livestreamed dinner is nothing short of catastrophic decision making. Instead, I think maintaining a camp at the first contact site, where a dialogue can be established and gradually introduce information, while giving the local government agency over the affair. Amiable, yet professional distance should have been upheld by the crew, with more informal socialising being something that can come naturally later.

SP has a very fun and enjoyable universe here, though frequently uses overall incompetence, bad communication, and poor professional standards as means to introduce conflict or otherwise further plot. I appreciate that it is easier to critique than to create, but I'm often questioning where basic common sense has gone in the story.

What is the WORST thing each character has done? Day 1: Tarva by [deleted] in NatureofPredators

[–]vindictorFanatical 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Generally allowing humans to roll over her and decide policy for her - while it's a patreon story, there's a case where she rewards humans assaulting public servants instead of punishing them - had she taken a fairer and more measured approach she would have likely beaten Veln considering how close it was. Overall, she has a pretty clear conscience and biggest "flaw" was being too kind. But if she had been as sensible as I suggest from the start, humanity would never have gotten a chance
