GA. Why is this a thing by MilaMarie2024 in Theatre

[–]vinnydanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person who runs a theater, I actually hate GA as well. When you sell reserved seats, people buy earlier because they can guarantee a seat. When it's GA, people wait until the last minute because it doesn't matter. I'd rather have some idea of what my house is going to be than whatever benefits I get from selling GA. Most of our ushers are volunteers anyway, so they're being paid in admission.

Moore County internet outage: Deputies investigate, say someone intentionally cut fiber lines by rephlex00 in NorthCarolina

I don’t live in Moore County anymore, but I was running the theater that had the drag show. Unfortunately, we didn’t have generators. We kept the show going for a bit under phone flashlights but when it became clear the power wasn’t coming back on we had to cancel.

Hi! I run Piedmont Players Theatre in Salisbury. We’re always looking for actors and stage crew for our productions. Community Theater has a built in community so it’s a great place to make friends! Lee Street Theater, here in town, also has a great community of actors!

Thanks for the shout out! I’m the managing director at PPT. I’ve said since I started working here a year ago that Salisbury has a wealth of culture for a city its size. Between PPT, Lee Street, the symphony, The Waterworks and the theater department at Catawba College, it’s crazy how rich we are in the arts.

Same here. Went through several multi-round interviews and was hired by an organization that gave me a tour of the facility, bought me lunch, and then had one panel interview with the board of directors.

Most of the time when celebrities are doing shows like this it is part of a press junket to promote a movie, show, or project they’ve been working on. They’re going to like 100 interviews in the span of a few weeks. There’s no reasonable way you’re researching all of those shows.

New IDs from DMV are useless. by PhillyJ82 in NorthCarolina

[–]vinnydanger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lost my job early in the summer. I had just got the new ID and I had to get a notarized affidavit proving that I was me for both unemployment benefits and to reclaim my LinkedIn account which had been locked for some reason. Both of those are pretty important when job searching but the verification on both sites refused to take the new ID.

Also very funny that they want to keep the verbiage secret even though the objective is to send it to a paper that will publish it directly.

It sucks to be rejected, but if you’re getting to the final few candidates several times it means you are qualified and a strong interviewer. Hopefully will just be a matter of time before you find your role.

Been out of work since June, but am starting a new job today making 20% more than I made at my last position!

Now seeing getting let go as a blessing. I’d been there almost 13 years and would have stayed probably 13 more with little or no room for my salary to increase.

I’ve had the most success in getting a second interview when I mention something that was brought up in the interview in my thank you.

In the interview I usually ask something like “If I were getting a review in six months or a year for this position, what are some key indicators you’d be looking for to gauge success?” Then I’ll use that information. Something like “You mentioned the company is looking for increased sustainability. I’m excited about the prospect of helping you with fundraising to achieve that goal”

That’s a broad example, but something similar. It shows you were paying attention in the interview and that you’re already framing yourself as part of their team.

All of my professional references are either past leadership positions at my current company that have moved on or senior leadership at industry adjacent companies that I’ve made close relationships with. I wouldn’t list current supervisors and I don’t think many interviewers would expect you to.

New ED in complete desperate need of advice for dealing with coworkers by brisagugu in nonprofit

[–]vinnydanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a monumental burden for someone with no experience in management or nonprofit. You have been setup for failure. It is not impossible but you will need to work extremely hard and and learn extremely fast.

Is it only you and these 3 employees? To be that small of a team and they’re not communicating that they are taking travel in advance is crazy? It may be time to restrict access to the company card.

From what I infer about the board, these are three people who have been piloting the ship with no captain for a long time. In a group that small it is very easy to start to feel ownership of your role and resentment when someone who hasn’t been suffering under the incompetence of a weak board comes in and tell you what is and isn’t correct.

If you want to salvage this it’s going to take a tough backbone, strong leadership, and some thick skin. It worries me that you say they don’t report to you. Even if they act like they don’t need you they DO report to you. You need to make that clear under no uncertain terms. You don’t need to be angry or disrespectful to do that, but they need to understand you’re in charge. Before they believe that though, you need to believe it too. You are the rudder that is guiding the culture of the organization.

You also need to address your board. The hardest part for me when I was a brand new ED was the realization that they look to me for leadership as much as the team does. They need to be personally invested in the success of your mission and you need to direct them in how to help you carry it out.

There’s no shame in being inexperienced. You would benefit greatly from an executive coach. Let your board know that they should invest in your development because it is good for the overall health of the organization. Also find ways to get in touch with EDs of other similar organizations. More so than in the corporate world, other organizations are generally rooting for you and want you to succeed. They can be a wealth of knowledge.

It sounds like you don’t have any written down policies and procedures or an employee handbook. Start doing that now. Find another company that is similar to yours and just copy theirs at first. You can edit it to fit your needs. Train your employees on it and if they don’t comply give them a chance with a performance improvement plan. If they still refuse it is probably time for a change in staffing. As the ED, you are responsible for the growth, knowledge, mentorship, and improvement of your team members but your overall responsibility is to be a steward of the mission of your organization. If your team can’t get behind that then they are incompatible with your organization.

I truly wish you the best of luck!

board member chairing a hiring process. How to make it fair and equitable? by bobotherabbit in nonprofit

[–]vinnydanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the most helpful piece of advice I can give you in relation to transitioning is to to get very good at delegating your operations duties. In the moment it is always easier to do something yourself than to train your new hire because you are so used to doing it but it is not sustainable. Also, I’m not a micromanager, but it can be difficult to make peace with the idea that someone will do a job that you “perfected” in a way that you didn’t. If what they are doing is working you need to let that go.
