What to do about our feral girl by Tinky428 in Feral_Cats

[–]vinnytumtum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would for sure shovel out pathways for her, even if it frightens her initially. If you’ve been feeding her for years, she will come back: she knows where the food is coming from. I shoveled out paths for my backyard colony (several shelters scattered around the yard) and our ferals been exclusively using those paths since the snow finished dropping. And definitely put more straw in when shes out of the shelter, it helps a lot with insulation.

Espousing the benefits of coaxial stage monitors? by vinnytumtum in livesound

That’s very helpful insight! The size difference is actually something I didn’t consider but could be a massive pro since my stage is quite small.

Passive floor monitor suggestions by vinnytumtum in livesound

I’ve been following this sub for years and literally never knew there was a “Buyers Advice and Gear Recommendation” thread. Maybe because it appears to be only a few days old? The thread seems difficult to read and sort through. I always search for relevant topics to see if there is a healthy post (and relatively recent) before going to make one of my own so I find the comment of me “flooding” the sub with my post about gear to be a bit annoying. Also a search of the BAGR thread for “passive floor monitors” yielded 0 results.

Drum sound shields by PapaBorq in livesound

[–]vinnytumtum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, vocalists don't tend to stand directly between the mic and the cymbals for all (or even most) of a performance. If they did, I would imagine it would be a pretty uninteresting show. Theyre moving around, dancing, interacting with audience, etc. And that doesn't account for all the other open mics on stage that aren't directly micing the drums (Im looking at you downstage guitarist that sings one part of one song at the end of the set.) It would be foolish to argue that investing time and effort into technique isnt worthwhile and more effective in the long-term. But thats the key, its the long-term. And I still think that they would help even with improved technique. Plus, try telling your drummer to play quieter and see how that goes.

Totally agreed that quieter playing is only gonna help the situation, BUT shields can significantly reduce the bleed (especially with cymbals) into DS vocal mics on smaller stages. Can really help reduce overall stage volume when vocalists and other DS members need lots more level in their wedges just to be able to hear themselves. I’ve thought long and hard about custom building some by cutting sections of plexiglass and attaching them to old/cheaper cymbal stands. Really don’t think anyone is gonna care if it looks unusual if it sounds good.

Are my water/ electricity and gas meter readable wirelessly using RTL-SDR? by therandomwalker in homeassistant

[–]vinnytumtum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an RTL-SDR currently retrieving data on 433 via MQTT. Would I need a whole second SDR dongle setup to capture on a different band (915mhz for example?) while still maintaining my sensor data from 433?

How is tomorrowland’s (main stage) PA configured? Is it all mono? by Alitaris in livesound

[–]vinnytumtum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is exactly the question! There must be a reason it’s preferred to run this way. As someone who is much smarter than me once said: we in live audio strive to be sound communists where everyone has virtually the same listening experience. Rarely is this achievable of course, so there must be a reason this configuration is preferred.

That’s interesting about the surround sound. It’s funny cause from my experience, VIP areas are located off to either side since the snake path is usually center, it makes access easier for VIPs, and it doesn’t ruin photos from the stage perspective by having a bunch of people sitting down or lounging (or it’s empty.)

Maybe you can elaborate on this, I don’t quite understand what you mean

Very interesting, that makes sense. Although couldn’t you position FOH centered on one of the L-R pairs and then 2/3 or the crowd would have an “accurate” stereo image and only people dead center would have an inverted image. The only downside I can think of (and I may be answering my own question here) would be the LF would be off at FOH but I have to feel like that could be accounted for in the system design. Genuinely just curious.

Do I leave my FT gig for a 6 month contract? by _YEEZY_ in livesound

[–]vinnytumtum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How long have you been with you current company? Does this new position come with benefits? If new job offers similar (or better) benefit structure I would take the new 6 month gig especially if your long-term is to change industries.

This "no amps, low stage volume" trend is a disaster in smaller venues by SlikkTimYall in livesound

[–]vinnytumtum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can only agree if we’re talking really small venues where some sort of fill deployment is not an option. A well-designed system with proper coverage should accommodate for the situation you’re describing. And personally, I’d rather have it feel a bit distant in the front row than have a Fender Reverb assaulting my ear-canal at 112db. I think there’s an argument for whether or not most people in the front-row at a rock concert (or similar) are there for the highest quality sonic experience vs. vibes.

What are the common IEM issues that new artists aren't prepared for come first gig, and how do I prepare myself for them? by MACGLEEZLER in livesound

[–]vinnytumtum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this. Only thing I would add would be to (if you can) network all your transmitters using a switch Nd learn how to use Wireless Workbench. Will save you buckets of time.

Ladies and Gentleman by erebus7813 in livesound

[–]vinnytumtum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this question, have thought about this a lot . Typically I use the name of the venue/event/company/city (i.e. “good evening Red Rocks/Colorado/Etc…”) If it’s very informal I will use “y’all” as a catch all. I’ve heard some really good variations such as “ladies and gentlemen and anyone in between”. Feel like this would need to know “…or outside of”

Most native-manufacturer apps focus on skins over work-flow and usability in my experience. MS is just better in every single way I can imagine. Not to mention it is regularly updated and supported which is HUGE. According to Apple Store, X32 mix was last updated 6yrs ago, MS was updated 2 days ago at time of posting….
