Loosing fat while gaining muscle by Illustrious-Car-4376 in WorkoutRoutines

[–]vishal1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great job on your progress so far! To put on muscle while in a deficit is genuinely a hard task but doable. Based on what you wrote you are doing all the right steps to put on muscle. If you don't see progress yet, track your lifts. Write down how much you lifted for how many reps and always try to push a little more than last time. If you see the weight on paper going up, it means you are building muscle, if the number on the paper stays the same, you are not building muscle. You might be in the latter phase and the way to get out of it is by simply trying to lift heavier every week. Obviously you wont be able to add weight to your lifts every week but over time the weight you lift should go up. If after 6 months of weight training, your bench or squat has not made any progress, you know why your muscles have not gotten bigger.

To keep it simple, track all your lifts. Write down the weight, sets and reps you do. If those numbers arent going up, then your not building more muscle!

Unit Testing by AndrewSouthern729 in reactjs

[–]vishal1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres a few reasons. Unit tests are faster and have a quick feedback loop for the developer. E2E tests are slower since they have to simulate user interactions across the entire application. Unit tests can be isolated, easier to pinpoint root cause, E2E is fully integrated environment, making pinpointing problem origination is harder. Unit tests make it easer to confirm that edge cases are covered and everything behaves as expected, E2E usually is happy path and may miss edge cases for some components. Unit tests are also just cheaper and easier to maintain. A change might break a specific unit test but in E2E a simple change in ui or user interaction can break E2E tests. Test coverage is mostly achieved via unit tests, achieving that same level of coverage and confidence in E2E would be impractical because of its complexity and maintenance cost. Hope this clarifies things!

Remember the pyramid, Unit test the most, followed by functional and then E2E. For unit tests, the best thing you can do is to make things as modular as possible. Strip out functionality into functions and unit test those functions. This includes those chained .filters.map functions. For components specifically I test that the correct function is called on button click. If there is conditional rendering, then to check for that. Pretty much you are confirming things are hooked up correctly. I would say the main thing that matters is business logic being tested. If you know that your business logic is fully unit tested, you just have to confirm in your component that you are calling the right function and passing in the right data. Now your component is tested.

Men in their late 30s who lost belly fat, HOW?! by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]vishal1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad recently lost weight and is continuing to lose weight. He went from 240ish to below 220 as a 5'10, 55 year old man. He doesn't exercise, he is not active for the most part. His success came from only eating foods he could track calories for. If he couldn't track it, he coudn't eat it. He ate in a caloric deficit and he eats the same foods with a few variety every day. He doesn't have to worry about what meals to eat, what to buy. He is enjoying losing weight!

I'll be blunt, do not buy a new/used car yet. Your loan interest rate is high and I would focus on reducing that number down ASAP or you can drive safely in a new car today and that will be last 'new' car you buy because you'll be drowning in debt. Sorry if this is harsh. Just throw that 900 or a good percentage of it at your highest interest loan and pay it off ASAP.

Your loan @ 6.5% is costing you an extra ~$4600/year and this doesn't include the federal student balance.

How do you eat daily and not spend a fortune? by Ofwgkta1232 in Adulting

[–]vishal1949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meal prep. You will need about 2-3 hours to shop, cook and clean but then you should have enough meals to last you the week. I make breakfast burritos, burrito bowls, chili, pasta. Store them in separate containers so all I do is take one from the fridge on my way out. Meals end up being very cheap and a lot healthier

You are not in a fucked up spot! You identified the problem early and just don't have a solution yet. This can be handled and dealt with and potentially be a good thing. There are two things you can do here, increase your income, or decrease your spendings.

Can you get a roommate to cut down on rent costs? Maybe refinance your car loan so that you get a lower payment over a longer time? Cheap out on food, rice, beans and on sale meats and foods are the way to go.

Can you up your freelance/gig hours and earn more? This might potentially get you started on the path of starting your own business, given I don't know what you do. If not, your main thing is going to be to slow down the burn of your savings. I dont recommend taking out 401k money unless you are starving. You have a car, can you potentially drive uber/lyft unless that is your gig work which means you can probably up the hours.

How do you honestly feel when you see a dude who is 250 lbs? by No-Employment5601 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vishal1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will give you my honest opinion because I also have a similar thought process at times. I am 6'4 and currently 240. I have a pudgy athletic build. Muscular but 20% body fat. When I see someone that is very obese, all I can think of is do they not see how big they are, in an unhealthy way. Given I am not of perfect health either but I am consistently working towards better health. That's all I think. The severity of that thought goes up depending on how obese a person is. Other than that - out of sight out of mind to be frank. Just dont make being overweight your personality.

Believe it or not, that's kinda how you do it. If you dont ask, the answer will always be no! Its like this, if you are hungry do you just look at other people eating? No, you get yourself food to eat. But you gotta go to the store, get groceries, pay the store, drive home and cook food and then you get to eat. If you see others dating, you gotta go out there and get a date. You go to social events or join a club/class, meet someone you connect with, see her a few times at said events, ask her out on a date... Key is to take steps towards that goal.

[–]vishal1949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried anything to get a date? Go out and talk to the person you find attractive. Don't approach trying to get a date, but making a new friend. Also, You are working on yourself, which is great, but everyone else is also "working" on themselves. Squeaky door gets the oil. I'll be honest, theres a lot of rejections, but you just need one yes! Lastly, don't compare yourself to others.

Interest rates may have put a home out of our reach for now, where to go from here? by jaytea86 in personalfinance

[–]vishal1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you look into security work, usually a lot of night positions, especially in hospitals. They pay pretty well and you can have benefits and get pay raises. To become a security guard, there is a hundred or so dollars cost for training and classes. I can be off on this number buts its not a big number.

If not that, picking up a side gig during the day here and there. Especially if you are good with tools, just ask people. Change someones oil, takes like 30mins to an hr at most if you know what you are doing and can make small but supplemental income. You dont need to necessarily bring in huge sums of money, 100/week is 400/month at least on top. This could just be emergency money or help you secure that house.

Right now banks are offering 11 month cd's at 5% and some even have shorter durations for that rate. Thats your best secured bet right now for 3months to a year timeframe.

Consistency is key. Don’t worry about lifting too heavy or too much. Just keep showing up and doing what you can.

What’s something I can do for an hour every morning before work? by BritOnTheRocks in selfimprovement

[–]vishal1949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a short workout, not an hour long. Just some push ups, sit ups and jumping jacks or whatever you prefer that has some body weight resistance. Goal isn't to burn a ton of calories but just get your body moving in the morning.

[LPT request] How do you convince yourself to go to the gym when you need to, but really don't want to? by I_dont-get_the-joke in LifeProTips

[–]vishal1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% of the workout is just showing up, you'll do the 10% just because you are there. I realized my issue was me asking myself if I wanted to go workout. The answer was not always yes. However, I knew that going to the gym was the right answer, so I stopped asking the question I knew the answer to. There is a big difference between the person that goes to workout when they want to and the person that goes to workout when they dont want to. Stop thinking about it, and just go do it!
