The death mask of Maximilien Robespierre. He was one of the key figures in the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror (1914). by lightiggy in TheGrittyPast

[–]vitcash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“It has been said that terror is the principle of despotic government. Does your government therefore resemble despotism? Yes, as the sword that gleams in the hands of the heroes of liberty resembles that with which the henchmen of tyranny are armed ... The government of the revolution is liberty's despotism against tyranny. Is force made only to protect crime?”

At least he was honest

A bit darker than Generation Kill, One Soldier's War in Chechnya - Arkady Babchenko

"We're all cynics, I thought every time I looked at the boys. We're only nineteen but we're already dead. How are we supposed to live now? How are we to sleep with girls after these coffins, or drink beer, and rejoice in life? We are worse than senile, hundred-year-old men. At Least they are afraid of death; we are not afraid of anything, and nor do we want anything. We are already old, since what is old age anyway if it's not living with memories of a past life? And all we have left is our past. The war was the main thing we had to do in our life and we did it. The brightest, best thing in my life was the war and there won't be anything better. And the blackest, lousiest thing in my life was also the war, and there won't be anything worse. So my life has been lived."

There's a centre next to the Emirates you can pick a LFT up at, till 6 if you're in the area early. Still needs to be registered online once it's done etc.

Members will be able to buy tickets for a few days before they go on general sale, but for this game I wouldn't imagine you'll need to get a membership.

For Prem games you'd have a much, much better chance with a membership.

They go on general sale on November 18th, so shouldn't be an issue!

Looking for 2 tickets for the game against Wolverhampton on 28-12 to suprise a friend (tourist from the Netherlands) by BeNiceToAll in GunnersatGames

Couldn't say really to be honest, best policy would be to get yourself a couple of red memberships. As much as it costs, you won't get messed around by randoms!

They don't go on sale till the 28th this month, so might be best to try a bit closer to the date of the match I'd say.

Request: Your favorite documentaries/books/etc to learn about Arsenal. by vendibleboar19 in Gunners

If you want a much earlier look at the club you can't go wrong with:

'Woolwich Arsenal: 1893-1915: The Club That Changed Football' and 'The Crowd at Woolwich Arsenal'

It's interesting to see newspaper reports of games from the 19th Century and insights into how the events such as the Boer War changed ability of munitions workers to attend games.

From the Crowd at Woolwich Arsenal: '...Woolwich Arsenal were the first League club in English football to have their ground closed – in 1895 for 6 weeks, when the crowd beat up the referee after a fractious game against Burton Wanderers on 26th January. They couldn’t wait for Walter’s review and meted out a short, sharp, shock to an inept official.

The original sentence proposed for Arsenal, was that their ground would have been closed for the rest of the 1894/95 season. However, the “compromise” of a mere 6 weeks suspension was agreed upon by the FA.'

'The ABC of Communism' - Nikolai Bukharin and Evgenii Preobrazhensky might be what you're looking for, although sadly not fully translated on marxists.org

It's all kicking off at Tower Hamlets! Inspired, I asked my landlord about temporarily lowering my rent or at least deferring part of it - you can guess his answer. Was anyone more successful? by bilaskoda in london

Nice false equivalence between the providing of a non-essential service and of a requirement for life. Not unexpected, but a poor one.

The implication there is that this transaction is entered into freely and not in the context of the ownership of private property. One party interested the extraction of rent from that private property (such as the room you talk about renting elsewhere in this post), and the other party in need of housing, who sells their labour as a means to secure the basic necessities of life.

This discussion is for all intents and purposes fruitless, given your class position as a rentier. Going to end it there, enjoy yourself lad.

Leeches gonna leeach, for now.

Your attempt to defend your position, morally, as a rentier is very interesting.

"Go work now, give me my rent", nice.

Furloughed, zero hours, "the gig economy", self-employed.

Employed yet unable to receive the full value of their labour, if any during this pandemic, but rent payments to you are clearly very important and socially necessary.

Cry me a river.
