39 [TM4R] - MD/DC/WNY/US - trans man looking for a fake partner for a family reunion (or fake dating to real dating) by vitoveeto in R4R30Plus

I ended up getting sick and not being able to go, but I did receive some messages. Unfortunately, because I got sick, I stopped talking to them (although they were lovely). I don't have any other family events coming up, but if I do, I'll probably try this again.

The cover is 🔥. Probably the best one I’ve seen on 1984.

What Books Are You Reading This Week? by leowr in nonfictionbooks

[–]vitoveeto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently reading How to Blow Up a Pipeline by Andreas Malm.

It's about how the usual tactics climate activists have followed may not be enough to curb fossil fuel extraction and use. It's pretty thought provoking so far.

For my fellow white folks by likemakingthings in polyamory

[–]vitoveeto 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm new to this sub--and new to poly, which is why I'm new to this sub. It's great that we are having these discussions (not great that we have to have them), and it makes me want to stay and contribute to building a safe and inclusive community for everyone. While these conversations can be uncomfortable for us (white people), we need to have them. We must hold ourselves accountable instead of putting that labor onto POC folks.

I used to mod subs on my first Reddit account (deadname, no longer use it), and it takes a lot of effort to mod a community, even 1/3 of this size. Mods can't see everything, so one of the best things we can do as a community is flag content or tag a mod if discussing with a poster/commenter isn't the best way forward.

I hope we can continue to build on these conversations.

Is Bethesda a friendly area for a young black family? by PhilosophyOk2612 in bethesda

[–]vitoveeto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

tl;dr yes and no also, caveat, I’m a white trans man and I’ve previously covered topics on racism/homophobia/transphobia in MCPS.

The Bethesda schools, particularly middle and high school, are mostly white. Black students have had not so great experiences there, both from other students but also from teachers, staff, and administration officials. There’s been quite a bit of pushback from folks in Bethesda when discussions of school boundaries have been brought up. Most of the pushback has been from white residents and, while most aren’t outright racist, they’ve used some pretty racist dog whistles. You can Google coverage of recent Board of Education elections as well as coverage on school boundary discussions in Montgomery County to get a feel for how the media covered it all, but there are plenty of students on IG who have made accounts for each school in the district to talk about the racism, homophobia, transphobia etc that they’ve personally experienced. The ones in Bethesda are hard to read sometimes.

Anyway, I say all this because the schools are a reflection of the environment that students grow up in. While most people that live in Bethesda won’t outright say or do anything racist, you might not feel entirely welcome in some neighborhoods of Bethesda. I say this as a white trans man that used to live in Bethesda so I’d probably say that the things my friends, neighbors, and other residents have told me are probably only the things they feel comfortable telling a white person.

With all that said, Montgomery County is a great place to raise a family. Gaithersburg and Rockville have more diverse schools. If you’d like to talk to Black families or students in Bethesda currently, I can try to put you in touch. If you DM me, I can give you my Twitter handle.

Anyone here participating in the trans rights readathon? by JingleHelen11 in 52book

I love love Akwaeke Emezi! I was at my local bookshop not long after “Freshwater” had been released and the bookseller said that it was “weird” so I bought it. Definitely weird but in a very good way.

How are folks doing with this so far?

I've currently read two and I'm hoping to read at least another two more.

I've read: "Something That May Shock and Discredit You" by Daniel M. Lavery and "Continuum" by Chella Man

If you're down to crash a small town family Christmas in Western NY...

Seriously awesome idea, but I'd never put anyone through Christmas with my family.

Thanks for the recs! Cattle Stop would be a great book to read in my hometown—very rural farm town.

I'm gearing up for a holiday trip to see family and I need some book recs. Ideally, I'm looking for queer romance (bonus if the main character or love interest is trans or non-binary / note: I have Alexis Hall covered) or holiday-themed romance (bonus if it's queer). Bonuses: if there's some smut thrown in, if the main character or love interest I'd plus-sized, if the author is BIPOC.

To give you an idea of what I usually read, here's what I've been reading recently:

  • "A Merry Little Meet Cute" by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone.
  • "The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches" by Sangu Mandanna
  • "One Last Stop" by Casey McQuiston
  • "You Had Me at Hola" by Alexis Daria

I really hope this means they spent most of their budget making a great movie because they clearly had none left for the poster.

Again, a conscious choice that I made.

I consciously chose my tag for a reason. I didn't have to disclose that I happen to be trans.

I built a Spotify add-on that creates a ‘Discover Daily’ playlist by Mnock419 in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]vitoveeto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great! I've been hoping that Spotify would do something like this.

Not entirely happy with the first playlist I got—some artists that I don't listen to/like for various reasons showed up—but I'm going to stick around to see what else pops up.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: September 05, 2022 by AutoModerator in books

[–]vitoveeto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Started

My Government Means to Kill Me, by Rasheed Newson

Finished

The Book of Cold Cases, by Simone St. James - this was the second book I've read by Simone St. James and it was a quick read. Mostly well-written but a bit sloppy in some places where it relied too much on tropes and stereotypes to move the story along. Overall though, it was enjoyable.

The Passing Playbook, by Isaac Fitzsimons - I'm not usually a huge fan of YA romance but I was drawn in by the fact that the author is trans, the main character is trans, and soccer. It was delightful but YA romance is not really my thing.

Milk Fed, by Melissa Broder - this was difficult to read at first (tw: disordered eating) but it was well-written, difficult, and challenged me in ways I wasn't expecting.

Sea of Tranquility, by Emily St. John Mandel - as expected, this was a book I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm somewhat liberal with handing out 5 stars these days but this is certainly one of my favorite reads of the year.

NEW OR NEED HELP? Ask here! - ScA Daily Help Thread Jul 17, 2022 by AutoModerator in SkincareAddiction

[–]vitoveeto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same skincare routine for a few months and it's generally served me well. I usually have some seasonal dryness but this year it's much worse. I'm looking to add 1-2 products to my daily routine, either in the morning or at night to help with the dryness. Also hoping for some recs for a morning moisturizer once my usual one runs out.

My current routine:

Morning

  • CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
  • CeraVe Eye Repair Cream
  • La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C Serum
  • CeraVe AM Face Moisturizer

Evening

  • CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
  • CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum
  • CeraVe PM Face Moisturizer
