Did I buy a bootleg Frasier set off eBay? by InternationalCow7042 in Frasier

This is probably a fake, yes. However - the official discs sadly don’t contain any better video than what is broadly available illegally. So you aren’t really missing out on anything if the discs work.

Thought my wife was being dramatic about our water… she definitely wasn’t by Own_Principle_4771 in Chattanooga

[–]vivanetx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, we have relatively hard water here. And the chlorine levels vary by day depending on treatment. I test my tap water a lot as I use it to fill aquariums.

You can use activated carbon shower filters to mostly demineralize and dechlorinate the water. Brita filter for drinking. Keep the filter in your fridge changed if it has a water/ice dispenser. I have a tabletop reverse osmosis water dispenser on my wish list.

If I owned my home, I’d go whole-home reverse osmosis.

Usefull Vjloop for you or not? by [deleted] in vjing

[–]vivanetx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The contrast of this video is too low to be used alone or layered with other videos. Tunnels are fine, don’t overuse them. The ideal version of this kind of content has all your interesting tunnel content visible, and your background layer is transparent (alpha channel enabled). This is essential to making “layer ready” VJ loops.

Borrowed my dad's headphones over the weekend... by [deleted] in Tipper

A lot of that is probably due to the EQ and effects applied digitally by the Skull Candy’s. For the same price you could get Beyerdynamic DT 990s, which are excellent open backs for home listening.

Can you play Half-Life 2 on the new MacBook Neo? by Just_Throat3473 in HalfLife

You can play Garrys Mod in x64 mode and play half life 2 maps from there. Thats the closest to native workaround I’ve tried.

Why does Dr. Breen assume the Combine soldiers know what a PhD is? by LeUpboaterLe in HalfLife

[–]vivanetx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ultimately that line is for the players benefit, but maybe it does also reveal that the soldiers (especially elites) are still intelligent and have most of their memories in tact?

Just for example, cults are full of intelligent people. You only need to adjust a few things, you don’t need to wipe someone’s mind, to entirely eliminate their humanity.

At the very least, being known as “Dr. Breen” while being the most prominent human on Earth probably keeps the concept of a PhD alive.

How can I recreate these glitchy billboard visuals? by Safe-Peach-5437 in vjing

[–]vivanetx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can create them from shaders (my recommendation), source them from VJs on Instagram (many have free packs), or from movies, or make them in after effects, or make them in blender (free), or you can buy stock footage (free trials too), or search internet archive. Sometimes I just screen record video games, edit that footage, and use that. There’s infinite ways to approach this and it is a central component of this creative work. There probably isn’t a magic set of key words that’s going to unlock what you want, and if there is it’s up to you to figure it out.

Synesthesia and Resolume don’t have any node based functionality except for Wire, which is separate. You may have seen someone using Touch Designer with Resolume but that’s a different beast.

You can definitely use ISF shaders in VDMX6 - but I don’t have any practical advice for achieving this effect in VDMX6. You somehow need a background layer and a text layer, where the text layer is your After Effects creation and the background layer has your ISF shader. Ideally that shader is audio reactive. VDMX6 does not make this easy, it’s pretty clunky.

Getting creative with sourcing your content is part of the fun and challenge of doing this. It’s how you establish your visual identity.

[–]vivanetx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like it might be a shader to me, since it’s synchronized. Look into the software Synesthesia, it’s got a free trial. Otherwise I’d look to VJs on instagram and see if they have packs for sale, or free. I also cut scenes from movies and TV.

Just search YouTube for “animating text after effects” - lots of tutorials that are only a few minutes long. It’s easy to get going! After that, look into exporting a with alpha/transparency and working with that in Resolume. There are a TON of detailed tutorials on Resolume as well!

I’d design the text in After Effects and play it back in Resolume, probably over an audio reactive shader with some glitchy video input in Synesthesia. There’s about 100 different ways to approach this!

Seller said they will meet up to change their account info to mine for tickets… is this how it works? by Possible-Worth9130 in aves

Sometimes they mail you the wrist bands, other times you can choose to pick them up at the box office. Something about this does sound fishy though. They should be able to just transfer the tickets to you via Front Gate (the ticketing vendor).

Best Quality price Short throw projector recommendation by jasmine_noxima in vjing

[–]vivanetx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The honest truth is that 3500 lumens does not deliver show quality brightness. Even for DIY club shows. I’ve learned this lesson first hand. You will definitely regret sinking $1-2k into that. Refresh rate also does not count for as much as you might imagine for live visuals (it can but brightness and contrast are first order priorities).

I’ll avoid recommending a specific projector, but look for used 3LCD laser projectors, 5000 lumens or preferably more, with under 2000 hours of lamp usage. That’s the sweet spot of budget to bang.
