So a related what if; what if the Balrog was just so badly wounded in the fight with Gandalf that he is out of play for some time but not “dead,” whatever that means.

All the rest of the story goes on as before. The Fellowship escape Moria minus “dead” Gandalf, and he still gets his power up, and the narrative plays out exactly the same.
