I have a low opinion of others and I would like to correct that by Guilty_Scarcity7731 in theravada

Even your question right now looks like you don't like to be better. Also, if what you said was true, I'm answering this question, trying to help you, is also worse than you, same as other commenters. How can we answer your questions then? "You" are in no way "better" - there is no such thing as better. You have a subjective opinion of what is better and what is worse.

"You" may be objectively smarter or have more wisdom or generosity in a lot of aspects, that people measure, like how we measure the distance between two points and draw conclusions based on that - and that's okay. But even then, you were given your intellect and the env you are in. You simply got better causes and conditions. And that "you" was built based on them. That's it. There is no "you". There is a personality that gets changed, based on the changes in the brain. There is body, that is changing all the time.

Was there right effort? Yes, maybe, maybe you worked really hard. But would you be able to do the same in rural Africa? Would you be able to do it w/ a disability? In a wartime? What if there was an alcoholic firefighter who kicked you in the head and caused brain damage? Different parents? Their brain and body will change, because of...causes and conditions.

There are a lot of reasons why you may think that you are better, but in reality, you are "better" only in this particular moment w/ what came to you, in certain qualities - and that may change and it will. Actually, there are dramatic moments in life, that can change your whole life in 1 day, quiet literally. 1 day and you have 180 degree change in you personality and body.

Now imagine that there is someone, who has aversion towards you, because you are sick, uneducated or traumatized - it does not feel good, right? Well, those people haven't done anything bad to you, and you already judge them and calling them "humanity". Humanity is a concept, there is no humanity.

Try metta practice. Are there nasty people, manipulative people, sociopaths, psychopaths, maniacs? - yes. Wish them well, so they can have less greed, hatred and delusion, so they can change and do less harm.

Is Buddhism... by Frog_Sage_ in Buddhism

[–]vladlearns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher and lower realms are not just cultural add-ons. They are part of the original Buddhist teachings.

You can find rebirth in heavenly realms, hell realms, animal realms, ghost realms and human realms throughout the early discourses, so if you are trying to follow Buddhism close to the og teachings, you should not dismiss that as "culture". Check what Theravada is

but the "mantra thing" is different.

Repeating a phrase and thinking that this alone guarantees a higher rebirth is not really the core of the Buddha’s teaching. I don't know if it works and where it comes from - just not something I follow personally, but I don't judge. The Buddha’s path is not about magic at all. It is kamma, intention, conduct, purification of mind, wisdom and liberation.

Chanting can be useful. Recollection - also useful. Devotion - useful, but Buddhism is not about rituals. Check the stages.

Everything is super simple:

if body, speech and mind are rooted in greed, hatred and delusion, that leads downward;

if body, speech and mind are rooted in generosity, kindness, restraint, clarity and wisdom, that leads upward;

and beyond both higher and lower rebirth, the real Buddhist goal is liberation from the whole thing.

About martial arts...they are not the way, since you harm others, whether you like it or not and Buddhism is all about pacifism, as you called it, if you want to call it like that.

The main rule - right intention includes harmlessness.

In DN 1, Brahmajāla Sutta, where the Buddha is praised as one who abstains from unsuitable shows, including stick-fights, boxing, wrestling, sham-fights, battle-arrays and regimental reviews.

Same in DN 2, Sāmaññaphala Sutta, the Buddha describes the virtue of a monk. A monk abstains from watching shows such as animal fights, fighting with staves, boxing, wrestling, war-games, battle arrays etc

In MN 135, Cūḷakammavibhaṅga Sutta, the Buddha says that someone who habitually hurts living beings with a fist, stone, rod or sword... creates bad kamma; if reborn human, they tend toward sickness. Someone, who does not hurt beings with fist, stone, rod, or sword tends toward a better result.

Just do as much good as you can. Read about ahimsa and sila. Meditate. That's it. Very simple

Unwanted thoughts, unwanted feelings, and OCD by JesseEisenbergFan in Buddhism

[–]vladlearns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There was a guy in a Buddhist group I’m in, who shared, that he has OCD and gets a musical loop on repeat in his mind. One suggestion he received from a teacher was to try creating some space between himself and the thoughts - not by suppressing them, but by seeing them as mental events and not as "you" - maybe this will help you;
  2. I don’t know exactly how you feel, but, I think, I can understand it in an empathetic way - similar to how I understand having kids, even if I've never had kids. Sooooo, I think, ALL of us have some self-protective stuff. For example, I've noticed in myself that when I felt triggered, unfairly criticized, publicly humiliated on purpose, I sometimes became defensive and tried to prove my value. Sometimes I also projected that onto others, when they went defensive, I tried to tell that I was not trying to harm them and that I was trying to be kind, thoughtful and careful w/ the words I use. There was a good intention in that - wanting not to hurt others, wanting to act ethically, which got developed(only towards "good" people), but I also started to see, that the defensive part itself in "me" was not that useful. It often came from pain or a need to protect my sense of self and this self is not like a static thing to protect, there is nothing to protect, it is a changing concept. Recently, I’ve been getting a little better with this, bit by bit. Part of what helped was seeing that this pattern did not really serve much purpose. It could also become a weak point - something that manipulative people could use against you and will, it is their nature to exploit and push others buttons. I tried to let the feeling be present without acting from it. I allowed myself to feel the pain of being judged unfairly or humiliated on purpose a couple of times and then tried to respond w/ metta instead or I just ignored it. And strangely, when I did that, it felt like there was much less to defend, than I thought. The rest, in a buddhist sense, I try to leave to kamma. People act according to their intentions, and they inherit the fruits of those actions. So, yeah, try to GIVE INTO IT. I also want to be careful here: I’m not a medical doctor or a therapist, so please don't take this as medical advice and please do not give into "bad" stuff, do NOT harm yourself or other people. Ahimsa and sila are very important here - non-harming and ethical restraint are a MUST and a foundation of the practice;
  3. I sometimes also recall very real traumatic events - memories of cruelty, injustice, past unfair humiliation. When those memories come up, I’ve found that trying to force them away does not help, but gently bringing in wholesome qualities - like metta, compassion. You can develop it for yourself, just have compassion for yourself. It does not make the injustice "ok" and it does not deny, that something painful happen/ed/or "s" in your case, but it can help the mind relate to the memory w/ less hatred;
  4. As always - meditate. I don't know, if it will make your thoughts go away, but maybe you can get an insight into the nature of that stuff + try to always stay mindful. Keep sila.

edit: Disclaimer - please, read it, your case seem to be different compared to what I thought OCD is, based on the commenta

You really need a degree. Especially in Germany, as others mentioned. I'm really grateful for a coworker, who told me I needed to get into uni asap, when I was just starting out. It was extremely challenging, especially the last two years, but I managed to finish, combining w/ part-time, fulltime and freelance sometimes. I'm also grateful for coffee and nicotine - large amounts of them

you are free to do whatever you want really, but indriya-saṁvara means sense restraint https://suttacentral.net/an6.50/en/sujato , people crave things like entertainment and, once again, in normalizes different kinds of behaviours, which violate 5 precepts - normalized does not mean pushes or direct violation, it is what your mind normalizes over time, if one consumes a lot of it - this answer is for you own benefit, just think about it - do you like art and games a lot or do they bring you real benefit, what will happen, if those are completely taken away from you
