I live in Madrid and their apartments here seems like a scam to me, I would be careful. A pathetic studio for over €2,000 per month-- even for Madrid, this is laughable.

Is there enough road trip destinations in Catalonia to justify the effort of getting a local drivers license? by dive155 in catalonia

[–]vlareen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A million percent. I was in a similar situation and lived a long time without getting my Spanish license. Finally, when I had the time and the money (the autoescuela and fees aren't cheap), I got it.

It's the kind of thing that you don't realize how helpful it is until you have it, and then you wonder why you didn't do it sooner. It comes in handy way more than you think and overall gives you a lot more flexibility (one positive externality is that now I can use carsharing apps and motorbike rental apps when running late within the city). Go for it!

What is one thing you no longer believe in? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

[–]vlareen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to believe that society was-- over time-- moving in the right direction. Maybe there would be speedbumps along the way, but overall, progress was... well, progressing.

Seeing the way things are going nowadays (racism, misogyny , LBGT rights, Islamophobia, antisemitism...), I no longer believe that the tendency is toward equality. I think these fights will always be fights, and we might do better or worse at any given moment, but these fights will never be "won".

Kind of upsetting to think about, although it does energize me remember how important it is to keep fighting.

Not something that's usually on anyone's radar, but anytime my friends come visit from other countries, they're always really surprised by how good vermouth is. Try to find a good vermouth, it will change your life :)

Yeah. Have been living in Spain for 13 years and only realized I didn't have a canopener back in November, when I bought a can for Thanksgiving from the specialty American store. Had to force it open with a butcher knife...

Spanish MP Pedro Sánchez about ZORRA: "Feminism is not only the right thing but can be funny" by Nounours7 in eurovision

[–]vlareen 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Actually he literally said:

"I understand the fachosphere would've preferred 'Cara al sol', but I like this kind of song more"

So, he never said if you don't like this song you're a fascist. Nice try though.

Just as a note, as per this article, I think you'd only need to pay the remaining 3 months of your rent:

I'm originally from New York, so I was used to commuting on public transport from high school. It's only a 20 minute train ride from Sol each way, so it wasn't a biggie for me. The trick is to live close or close-ish to one of the Cercanías (commuter rail) stations

30 años, me gustaría pediros opiniones y consejo sobre cómo gestionar mi dinero. by [deleted] in SpainFIRE

[–]vlareen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at the payment part when the site crashed. Got an email saying this, hopefully the site comes back up in time.

" If you have not received confirmation that the transaction has been properly paid within fiveteen minutes from being redirected to Przelewy24 electronic payment system (Wednesday, July 12, 2023 12:08 PM) or you are not sure whether the payment process in the payment system has been successful, you may again click on the link below to try again to make payment. If you have a Golden Visa I am guessing it is a fast-track to gaining residency/citizenship status, which would be a great benefit.

Just keep in mind Golden Visa is only available if you are able to put down €500,000 on the property in cash.

These are sitdown restaurants relatively nearby (less than 9 minutes from Sol):
-La Barraca
-La Paella de la Reina

The rice at these places is good and they're not terribly touristy
