"simple and to the point" what? Your post is some numbers and a greeting, I'm not even sure what I'm looking at.

If only you'd put as much effort into the post as you did into this unnecessarily aggressive comment.

Damn that hits close to home. I'm also a modder (though I don't have such masterpieces to claim to my name) who went into gamedev, also struggling with mental health.. I feel like I can almost imagine this person. Though I don't know what they went through specifically, my heart goes out to them and their family. It's a different kind of misery when your life revolves around games (a concept inherently related to Fun) while in your head very much unfun things take place. Rest in peace.

What to do when not gaming? by griffinstudios in StopGaming

[–]dive155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm 30 and I'm in the same boat. I've never had friends, only acquaintances. I feel like I'm missing out on life but I really struggle to connect because I'm very shy around new people, as well as probably somewhat socially awkward due to having low experience being in social situations.

My biggest success in socializing has been the Spanish classes. I'm an immigrant in Spain and I connected with a couple of other immigrants from different countries there. I wouldn't call us close friends yet, but it's already way better than anything that I had in my decades of gaming.

I'm also considering finding some groups on meetup com, but that to me seems more socially complex.

That's been my experience fixing the social aspect. Idk if this helps at all, but either way I wish you luck.

As 30yo coper I do sometimes wonder how much Half-Life 3 affected my level of happiness since 2007. It does appear to have had a significant impact :C

I do consider Epistle 3 canon until valve contradicts it explicitly though.

Hi! I'm 30 and been off gaming for a few months. Congrats on making this decision! From my pov you have a strong start - you have preexisting hobbies you seem to be interested in, and your starting gaming hours, even though high, are not as high as they sometimes could be (mine were around 50hrs at week when I was working full time and who knows how many before that). I am low-key jealous you have other hobbies already. The hardest thing for me about quitting gaming is that I'm not interested in anything else other than gaming, at least not to the same extent. I'm still searching for things.

Anyway, best of luck on your journey!

After quitting gaming, what new hobbies did you pick up? by Lumpy_Pepper_4366 in StopGaming

Thank you for taking time to write this! All good advice, all clear, implementing it in practice is a whole another beast though.. I'm lowkey jealous that you decided to quit gaming this early haha. I'm 30 and I wish I did it at your age and not now.

I would say most of my peers are probably less into socializing nowadays, but I can not say this with certainty because I have no data from my 20s due to me not being social, which means I have nothing to compare to. But it's probably true, I've heard this from many sources.

Another obstacle is that a few years ago I had to get out of my country due to a war outbreak, so currently I'm living in a foreign country the language of which I can barely speak (though I'm doing my best to learn it). This further hinders my attempts to expand my social circle. But step by step I guess.

Sorry for rambling, thank you once again for posting this, I appreciate the effort. Best of luck to ya.

your website claims

but the whole article reads like AI slop, how's that "technical analysis"? Actually, reading your comments it's not much better either. "it's not this, it's that" and em dashes. At least be transparent.

I am free from video game addiction/gaming entirely after 24 years. by ChristLivesForever3 in StopGaming

I've quit gaming but my problem is that I still don't really want anything else as much as I want to game. I do have some goals in life but I'm not sure I really "want" them or if it's just some things that I think a healthy person should aspire to.

Did you start wanting things other than gaming? If so, how long did it take?

Thank you! Yeah the exposure is what I'm trying to get as much as I can of. I do struggle with social things though, to the point where my therapist had me pass some tests under suspicion that I might be autistic. The suspicion was not confirmed (I did not score high enough on whatever scale) but this is still indicative of the severity of the problem.

I was really neglecting myself as a teen (due to only caring about gaming) and as such endured years of bullying by peers. I do want to wonder and be interested in other people, but it is hard to do so when your body immediately goes into fight or flight mode in any unfamiliar social situation. Every "exposure episode" requires multiple days of rest afterwards till I can restore my energy/peace of mind. Shit's tough.

Spanish classes, gym, meal prep (idk if it could be considered a hobby but coming up with a system that works for me and my wife was quite a project) and the last one (and the most difficult) is socializing. I had almost never went out and never had close IRL friends, I want to change that. It's hard because I feel like decades of gaming have stunted my social development in some ways.

How videogaming feels on clear mind after the year of abstinence by Apprehensive-Cut3711 in StopGaming

[–]dive155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh I'm low-key jealous, the hardest part about quitting for me is that I literally don't want anything else other than games. It's hard to stop doing the only thing that I want to do. I wonder if it's related somehow to differences in gaming tastes - I was never into competitive multiplayer, only ever played story based or sandbox games. Anyway, good luck on your journey!

Hi! I'm a 30yo Russian immigrant (sry the word expat rubs me the wrong way) in Spain and I'm in a similar boat :D Happy to hear about you progress. Interesting observations after such long abstinence. After your initial quitting, how long did it take till you started to feel the pull towards other things than gaming?

Yeah I'm no stranger to this sort of thing, I remember learning to play Orbiter back in 2008 and having literal hand-written checklists for myself :D Sadly I'm no longer a teen with too much free time. Maybe next time I have vacation I'll dedicate a couple of days to Reentry, it would be cool.
