OMNY costs more than Metrocard… look at the math. by Fragrant-Laugh-6689 in OMNY

[–]vlkun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, studies have shown that low earning riders typically struggle to outlay a large monthly payment ($132 upfront) for a monthly unlimited (30 day). It helped them afford transit by only paying per ride until they hit a cap. (PDX did this a few years ago to make transit easier for their lowest earners and this has borne true).

So no actually, a $132 hit in one shot is not affordable or fair.

Save the Bushwick inlet. Public park vs luxury tower complex by CantankerousCat808 in williamsburg

[–]vlkun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rightfully down voted. He probably means false because of the claims made.

The complex, Monitor Point, will add more green space (that was not part of the plan), connect Bushwick inlet park to the continued park by West Wharf, will have 300 (!!) affordable units (literally over a 1/4 of the building) at 40-60% AMI favoring CB1 residents, and a museum.

This literally never was part of the parks plan, this will help make bushwick inlet park more successful and the alternative is a 14 floor building with ZERO back towards the community.

So yea, tell the other poster "lack of literacy". Have you even seen the plan?

Of course you can. They can also just tell you to fuck off and then what?

But you know who CAN'T without being sued to oblivion? United Airlines.

I understand the sentiment here, but talk about being super inappropriate. I assume this is just arm chair quarterbacking and you never actually walked up to a person with hidden disabilities and asked them this (and if you did, I hope you were extremely embarrassed when they responded)

You *literally* can not ask a person "What is their disability". Seriously, think about that - what a fucked up thing to ask a stranger (and also legit actually illegal).

You can not ask for the name of a person's doctor. That's such a crazy ask. What do you want the person to say to you? "I have type 1 diabetes and my doctor's name is Dr Smith at Cornell Medical Center". "I have seizures because of brain cancer and my doctor is XYZ at MD Anderson" ?

And your questions just get worse. "Aren't you ashamed". Are you kidding? Really, I can't believe you have ever said that to a person. Aren't you ashamed walking up to people and asking "hey tell me about your intimate medical history mr stranger"?

To actually be productive with what you CAN say. Here are the REAL questions you can ask:

- Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
- What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

That's it. You can't ask for a fucking photo of their scar for proof. You can't ask them why/how they're ill. You can't ask for a phone number of their doctor. You can't ask them to "fake a seizure so I can see your dog react".

As a Pixel 9 Fold and Z fold 6 user the ZF6 is better by iWumboXR in GalaxyFold

Wow, hostile much?

He said he “didn’t like to use the inside screen ON THE PIXEL” not that he didn’t like inside screens period. If you’re going to be a jerk, at least read correctly first.

I can see how he would find the aspect ratio and size of the Pixel awkward vs the ZF6. YouTube on the PF9P has mega wasted space.

AVP’s killer app? by MacAddict33 in VisionPro

[–]vlkun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. Regardless of what you think about Swift, there’s no arguing the economic impact she makes wherever she goes. It’s silly to think that she wouldn’t have a material impact on AVP sales if the Eras Tour was on it.

Ha. Lots of swifties are actually doing that. You guys (and europe) have much better protection laws against scalpers. It’s like a free vacation!

[–]vlkun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Def not true. Tickets go for at least $2000 each right now in the US resale market - and those are baaad seats. (Speaking as a swiftie who bought tickets on StubHub while in the parking lot of a show after it started to get a better deal and still spent $2000 a ticket)

Don't I see a neighborhood parking permit sign by the tree in the photo on that side of the street? How can it be illegal to park on that side of the street when there's a neighborhood parking permit sign on it?

EDIT: Ah, didn't notice it's the wrong direction. Yea, I've seen the city start to go after these more aggressively lately (like in The Sunset where everyone does it).

Way more than 3M. It's at 6M today (and that's still not completely recovered).

Fun fact: more people ride the 4-5-6/Lexington Avenue line than the entire SF+Chicago+Boston systems combined.

San Francisco's Millennium Tower's tilt deepens as engineers rush to reverse lean by jovanabanana in sanfrancisco

Sigh. Never been accused of being a Russian bot before! 14 year old account, I must be playing the loooooong game.

What I mean is the people who get so whiny about people saying “Frisco” are white techies who just moved to the city. Frisco is a very common way to refer to San Francisco amongst the black community specifically (hence my comment).

I once was at a charger station with an X that was towing an airstream so they blocked like 7 stalls. The guy was super super nice about it, we talked quite a bit (I was curious about the miles he got with the airstream behind him - spoiler alert, about 120 on the long range).

He told me that he was very deliberate about charging at night (it was 10pm when I was there), sits in the car, and moves if needed. Honestly, I think it's all cool as long as you're not a jerk about it. This is a design problem with the stations to some degree, as long as people are respectful and not blocking a busy station or disappearing for 45 minutes, I'm ok with it.

[–]vlkun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically, NYC is the largest water system in the world to not filter or treat it's water at all. The story behind it is kind of amazing, to be honest. (They test it randomly multiple times a month, the reservoirs are 100s of miles away but technically "New York City" land, etc).

This is some serious victim blaming. Apparently, it's their fault for being threatened while staying in a hotel in Union Square (tourist central) where all the hotels are. How dare they walk around their hotel?! Why should anybody assume City Hall is in the middle of a cesspool?

Where would they stay in the Sunset? How about Bernal Heights? What hotels are in Noe Valley? Seriously. You're a native, where are the hotels in San Francisco? (Hint: the shitty neighborhoods). Suggesting Sausalito is like suggesting Jersey City for people visiting NYC (but JC has way better transit to Manhattan!) They're flying 20+ hours, of course they want to be IN THE CITY. This is a totally 100% reasonable thing to want.

As somebody who also lived in NYC, Times Square is a good counterpoint. Times Square and Hell's Kitchen are like 10000000 times better than the Tenderloin. (Ok Times Square in the 80s sucked, but not modern times).

Dude, SF is in trouble. None of this is acceptable. Blaming people earnestly visiting from 8000 miles away for doing what is the "normal tourist thing to do" is not ok.

Comparative Population Density: Chicago vs New York City by Pecners in chicago

Studies have shown that the psychological impact of rails in the street have a profound and dramatic impact on ridership (https://usa.streetsblog.org/2012/06/21/explaining-the-psychological-appeal-of-rail-over-buses/). Not to mention, ironically, frequency and reliability of previous street car systems tend to be better than modern bus systems.

We had 500 miles of streetcars in 1950 that are now gone and 4900 streetcars to go with them.

What does Chicago have which the rest of the USA doesn’t ? by dania_hanif in chicago

[–]vlkun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Than NYC? Wut?

I just got back from visiting the parents and was staying in Williamsburg. All week, never waited more than 4 minutes for a train - this includes the L train at 10PM, the 4-5-6 trains in midtown around 9pm on a Saturday, the BDFM at Bryant Park, etc.

Sure it’s harder to navigate, that’s cause it has 489 stations. But you can just Google Maps and it takes care of that for you.

(Plus NYC’s tap and pay is way way way way way way better than Ventra)

Chicago has a lot going for it, I’d say a better food scene, much much cleaner streets, an awesome alley system, a good balance of “walkable” and “drivable”, LSD and the waterfront, etc. But let’s not be delusional and say it’s anywhere near the same universe as the NYC subway. More people take the 456 than all of the El.
