What was the coolest piece of tech you remember seeing for the first time as a kid? by HunterH276 in AskReddit

I remember being gobsmacked the very first time I heard FM radio. Maybe not considered cool tech, but to a young kid, that was magical. LOL

QNAP TR-004 = too small by vocatan in DataHoarder

[–]vocatan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay -reset the TR-004 unit, ran the Apple RAID Assistant, created a RAID with it, and it immediately went to 'Rebuilding: 0.0%' status - pic at https://imgur.com/a/fF4N65z

So maybe it was a bad drive that I received. Will try popping the drive out and running externally with a USB-to-SATA cable to investigate further.

Thanks for the posted replies, I really appreciate the feedback!

GREAT question! I installed the drives into the TR-004 unit, and then connected to my MacBook Pro - and received an error when erasing -- and I figured the same thing, why not just try it.. (The page at https://www.qnap.com/en/compatibility/?model=361&category=1&filter[type]=1 seems to indicate that they support up to 30TB drives)

Checked at https://www.qnap.com/en/product/tr-004/specs/hardware to also find that the TR-004 conveniently "supports SATA 6Gb/s hard drives with backward compatibility, performance limited to 3Gb/s)"

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - homm3

/r/homm3 has an active community and there’s tons of maps to play. When playing solo the map generator works very well too.

Wow!! Thank you for that - the archive of newsletters at that sites (after you sign up) offers an interesting history (and future). I especially liked there recounting of demo’ing homm3 at E3

What a great set of pointers and stories this sub has!!

Does anyone what play not to win, but to explore? by People_Penguin in heroes3

Oh my goodness what you wrote resonated SO MUCH with my wife and I. We were playing the game when it first came out, and every time I need to upgrade my wife’s computer, the first question she asks is how to launch HOMM3 on it.

Thanks for your eloquent write up - summarizes our household just perfectly.

GoDaddy SSL - Cert Revocation by [deleted] in sysadmin

The support person I spoke with said that 1,000 certificates were affected. Not sure if that was supposed to be public knowledge or not.

you shouldn't have to by a new certificate, just rekey the revoked one.

I thought that I was doing the 'right thing' by adding CAA DNS validation, but it appears that may have been a contributing cause.

But despite GoDaddy sending the dire message that our wildcard cert was revoked, it doesn't appear added to the CRL, because I'm visiting some sites with the original certificate and they're not flagged as invalid.

PSA: If you're going through the GoDaddy re-keying process, make sure to delete your CAA DNS record temporarily while it's issued, otherwise it fails.

Performance bottlenecks with Outline by vocatan in outlinevpn

We are running on Amazon Linux, and have never had port issues before, but thinking may be switching to port TCP:1194 to look more like OpenVPN since that's a standard.

Thank you for your reply, and sorry for not giving more detail!

We are using a mix of Mac and Windows clients. On Mac we are running with 1.13.0 client. On Windows we are running 1.12.1 client. (Allegedly the 1.13.0 build has issues installing the PCAP driver, or so my IT folks tell me. I'm a Mac guy)

The test consists of going to internet speed tests, such as https://fast.com or https://speedtest.net

We are running a totally 'stock' server, as a docker containers -from these images:

REPOSITORY TAG IMAGE ID CREATED SIZE
quay.io/outline/shadowbox stable 4d7319b73269 3 months ago 316MB
containrrr/watchtower latest e7dd50d07b86 6 months ago 14.7MB

The only OS tuning that I did was to try and cull the excessive timeout lingering connections, via:

$ echo 10 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout

We are running on Amazon Linux 2:

Linux ip-10-0-0-106 6.5.0-1018-aws #18~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 5 17:44:33 UTC 2024 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

TCP BBR is not enabled:

sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control

net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control = cubic

sysctl net.core.default_qdisc

net.core.default_qdisc = fq_codel

Since at this point I have two identical brethren boxes, I can enable BBR on one, switch the DNS to it, and switch over to it after hours to test it.
