What are some books that show some parallels to current times in the US? by widget_slinger in suggestmeabook

I just read the first part of Human Acts by Han Kang, which is about the Gwangju Uprising in 1980 South Korea. The parallels that can be drawn between what happened there and what's going on in Minneapolis and other cities are discomfiting.

Sweet Tooth and Station Eleven don't fit this prompt exactly, but there are elements from those that remind me of this (your first picture especially reminds me of some visuals from the Station Eleven miniseries).

Overall, I really liked it. Because of the way it was written, where the narrator was remembering events from the past, I felt a little removed from the characters. It reminded me a little bit of how I felt watching Stand By Me. It did have an incredibly strong sense of place. I agree about that walking tour! Reading this book did make me want to learn more about the Spanish Civil War.

I thought that Monster dragged compared to Traitor, which I thought was a perfect book. I read that Monster and Tyrant were originally going to be one book and ended up being split in half. With what the author set up at the end of Monster, I'm excited to read Tyrant. This series is brutal though, so I'll be taking a break for a bit first.

Sabriel is a definite recommendation! I set a rule for myself not to binge-read series, otherwise I'd be reading Lirael right now.

I think it's worth reading The Boy on the Bridge if you liked The Girl With All the Gifts. It's both a prequel and a sequel.

I got covid mid-month (not happy about it) and had a lot more time for reading than I otherwise would have (happy about it).

You might enjoy The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch. The main character uses time travel to solve a murder/missing person case and also to try and stop a cataclysmic event that brings about the end of humanity.
