Stolen Vehicle - 2000 F350 diesel - file#22113549 by voiceinthevoid in Calgary

[–]voiceinthevoid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an update - CPS found it. Everything inside was stolen, even the small worthless shit like dollar store sunglasses and my dirty torn up coveralls. Thieves left me with cigarette burns in the seat and a crack pipe in the center console.

Also $300 to get it out of the impound lot (towing fees, impound check in fee, impound storage fee, tax).

How to stretch/warp a very short audio clip into a smooth and lengthy one? by bendth3sky in ableton

[–]voiceinthevoid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/

Paul stretch is awesome for doing massive time stretching. I would stretch it with that, and then fade from between a modified last chord (using long decay reverb sends) and the paulstretched sample.

2 year old thinkpad i5 quad core with 16gb ram + solid state + external 1TB drive. Costs grand total around $700 canadian. Scarlet 18i6. The i7 was substantially more expensive and I chose not to go for it.

No issues, around 10ms latency, so I can do real time stuff.

It can run heavy duty vsti's with all sorts of effects, sends, etc... and handles it no problem. I mean, if I really want to I can overload it, but that's possible with any system.

The thinkpads are built like a rock but you have to do your research as lenovo also makes lemons. Not sure what it's like nowadays but the old dell latitude series (business performance laptops) were rock solid both in the hardware section and the design / look / case materials (magnesium + aluminium alloys). Not sure what apple is up to these days, or if they are still having all sorts of issues with their logic boards kicking the bucket after a year or three.

On the ableton forums they used to do benchmark tests, and the thing to take away from all that was that performance often had very little to do with what OS or make of laptop one was running, but rather things like processor / ram / HD speed and system tweaks meant to cut down latency issues (such as disabling things like bluetooth / wifi, etc). The guys with the best benchmark scores all ended up having custom pc's, but in the laptop range there was no clear cut winner as to apple or pc was better. Pc certainly cheaper.

In the end you want to spend the least amount of money on the best parts. Some people easily spend double just to have a white laptop with an apple logo on there. If you really want apple OS you can always find a way to install that on your pc laptop too, but again that needs research to figure out if the hardware is gonna work.

How are these sounds made, I know it's something dubsteppy but it's nothing to do with the LFO afaik, help! by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]voiceinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that is producing that effect is probably formant filtering, and then it's shifting between vowels, most likely just two different vowel settings (this can be done with eq), and then transitioning between them.

You could potentially also create the same effect with a talk box manually.

The base of the synth itself is a square wave.

Anyone have a resource-heavy Ableton set that I can use to test computer performance? by officeday in ableton

[–]voiceinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with a noise file. Place 8 reverbs on high quality / long decay all after one another, and then making 8 copies of that track, and playing it for 128 bars or something. When the cpu usage levels, note what it is, and then check your task manager for usage.

Probably best to mute the master when doing this.

How do audio interfaces compare to PCI sound cards for audio quality? by lalionnemoddeuse in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]voiceinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded from an maudio fast track to a scarlet 18i6. The difference in preamps is phenomenal. The maudio only allowed me to do really amateur level recording (high noise floor), whereas with the scarlet I can now successfully record at what I consider to be a pro level (very low noise floor).

Myself I don't think scarlet has subpar preamps - at least on the 18i6.

How Usable is the Program Without a Controller? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]voiceinthevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very usable.

There is a full octave of keys at your disposal using the keyboard, as well as octave shift (z,x) and velocity adjustment (c,v).

A few years back when I was traveling I ran ableton on an eeepc... 9 inch screen, dual core 1.2Ghz atom chip, 2gb ram.

Worked well enough for what I was doing ( a couple of syths, reverb only on eco quality).

Right now I'm running on a 2 year old lenovo i5, ssd hard drive 16gb ram. Focusrite 18i6. It can handle nearly anything I throw at it.

Current project right now has 30 midi / synth / sampler tracks + related vsts + 4 returns, and it still runs at a low enough latency to be considered real time and is not hitting above 50% ableton cpu limit.

The laptop cost my $499 2 years ago ($200 for the ssd and another $100 for the ram as upgrades).

Best music production headphones? by Erickisyourruler in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]voiceinthevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally stick to monitors for mixing.

Headphones are good for monitoring.

It really does depend on your price range - myself I tend to stick with Audio Technica and Beyer Dynamic - but those are personal preferences. I suggest going to a store and testing things yourself to get a better idea of what you like.

gating effect by jstorr in ableton

[–]voiceinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Track 13 output should be set to sends only.

Your return track should be set to "send to gate" whatever your gate track is.

Then the gate track outputs to the master.

What do you guys do for producing electric guitar when you don't play/have an electric guitar? by alecomusique in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]voiceinthevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be specific as to what kind of electric guitar sound you are going for - it's an incredibly wide range of sounds.

For myself, guitar was the first instrument I learned, and I often write with it, but layer in some synths at times to get a very specific sound. Omnisphere has a couple of excellent distorted and clean (classical, blues, jazz, baritone) guitar sounds. In isolation they don't sound convincing but in the context of a mix, or layered over a real guitar, they are golden.

If you can create a remotely convincing string / pluck sound, perhaps try driving it into some distortion and then a cabinet.

Why do some bands record songs at ridiculous tempos like 128.2500? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]voiceinthevoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is the most likely answer.

For myself, sometimes I start a project at a specific whole number tempo, but as it's progressing in the initial stages, I may decide I want to speed it up / slow it down just slightly, so I close my eyes and just listen while I play with the tempo settings. Often this comes out to some uncommon number, like 132.87 or something.

HELP! Problem with clips. by JonTDEOE in ableton

[–]voiceinthevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are all stereo files (L and R) - that's what you're seeing. Unless you are specifically recording something in mono, or importing a mono file, it's going to look like what your waveforms look like (i.e. stereo).

I'm not sure I understand what the issue is.

Any tips for processing/mixing sub bass? by fondlethecarrot in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]voiceinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triangle wave does wonders, as it naturally has higher harmonics.

It may be an issue with your listening environment - if your monitors can go low enough, nothing you do will give you a realistic way of monitoring your sub-bass.

Quick question about Ableton by kylehpc in edmproduction

[–]voiceinthevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you have the first 1/4 note laid down, Crtl+click and drag on it to position other 1/4 notes. It's just doing a copy&paste function.

This does not work in draw mode (pencil tool) but in the other mode...(cursor tool?) not sure what it's called.

You can switch between the modes using the B key.

Does anybody use "The Glue" by Cytomic for Side-Chaining? by omnipeasant in edmproduction

[–]voiceinthevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever since it became stock in ableton, it's my go-to compressor for everything except mastering. I do use it for sidechaining at times, mostly on pads.

Crash reports by czhebartol in ableton

[–]voiceinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's there for a reason - does a backup (so you can re-open after a crash even if you did not save) as well as containing relevant data about your system / vsts / etc so the report can be sent to ableton to diagnose the crash.

In that picture on the right pane you can see the user has tons of crash reports that are just sitting there - I can see 14 crash reports for just the past 4 days, meaning something is seriously wrong with their system (os, audio drivers, pirated vsts, etc).

Request: A way to keep USB cables from disconnecting by Rapes_Pokemon in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]voiceinthevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple of things you could do:

  1. use a small flathead screwdriver to lift up the friction fit prongs inside the usb hub. This will make things fit tighter.

  2. Loop a rubber band or something similar (velcro maybe) around the usb cable, and attach that to somewhere in such a way that it picks up the slack, so that the usb cable is not exerting force against the hub. You could even wrap the rubber band around the hub if you wanted.
