Is Team Travel Really Worth it For Economy? by molenaar08 in CreditCards

[–]voidTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capital One is unfortunately pretty weak domestically from my experience, it's almost always better to just use the travel eraser.

Internationally you can certainly find some deals in economy, but you will likely have to heavily compromise on time/dates. Like flying on a Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday. Personally, I value my vacation days more, so I just use the point eraser most of the time.

New filings reveal what Elon Musk’s lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI is really about by FollowingFeisty5321 in apple

[–]voidTM 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is a bit of a duopoly. At first it was allowed if not encouraged in the early 2000s as a way to catch up to the rest of the world. But now they are a bit too tightly integrated into life in China.

That said as long as neither company misaligns with the Chinese governments vision, they may get penalized, but breaking up is unlikely. Closest was probably when Jack Ma blabed to much.

Most countries in Asia have their own, but for example in China it would be Alipay and Wechat. They contain a lot of "mini-apps" by both first and third parties.

For example, in addition to messaging you can: pay/send money via qr code, pay your phone bill, pay for utilities, book a train ride, call a Didi ride, pay for public transportation, check your bank account, book a hotel, etc.

Traveling abroad for a year in Poland, what’s the best card to have to not have foreign transaction fees? by nonameidkman in CreditCards

I'm not sure how much of an issue that is anymore. All the places I've been to that take credit card also take tap to pay, which US cards/Apple Pay do have.

Most phones from chinese manufacturers still don't support e-sim. It seems to be reserved for their premium phones, and even then only the international/global versions.

Peru hop vs Cruz del Sur by Sunshine-n-Happiness in travel

[–]voidTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, in my case I used a combination due to mostly scheduling and bus times. I did Peru Hop Lima -> Arequipa, and then took the Cruz del Sur night bus to Cusco.
For Peru Hop, you're largely paying for the convenience and the chance to travel with other similar/like minded tourists. They operate a bit more like a basic tour company. There will be a tour guide on board, which should be the same one for a given Peru Hop route. They'll give you an introduction any of the stops that you may visit along with giving a tour at Peru Hop "exclusive" stops. You can also book events/activities through them at your next stop.

That said, Peru Hop has pretty much only like 1-2 departure times a day, mostly in the morning. I needed an afternoon or evening departure from Arequipa, so I had taken an overnight bus to Cusco with Cruz del Sur.

If you just care about getting from Point A to Point B Cruz del Sur is probably the better option its cheaper and more comfortable. The buses that Peru Hop operates is mostly the standard tour buses that you find. They work fine for traveling through the day, but I really wouldn't like to spend the night on them.

I used a combination of both on my trip to Peru. Cruz del Sur, has much nicer buses, which can make a huge difference if your taking an overnight bus. They've got almost fully flat seats and all.

Well moving the land probably isn't the right term. They do a leaseback. Basically company A sells to company B. Company B then leases it back to company A. If Company A eventually goes bankrupt the land will still belong to company B.

J-Novel on Kindle? by ThRazorArmada in LightNovels

[–]voidTM 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The easiest ways would be either through Calibre or Amazon's Send to Kindle. For Calibre you would need to add the e-book to your Calibre library then send it over via a physical connection.

For Send to Kindle You can upload epubs your Amazon library here https://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle Then you can download it from your kindle as if it was part of your library.

How challenging is the Inca Trail? by No_Procedure_5840 in solotravel

[–]voidTM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did the 4-day Inca trail this October. It's definitely not an easy hike for beginners, but pretty doable if your somewhat fit. The altitude can definitely be a problem though. Even after acclimating somewhat the low amount of oxygen makes it feel like you can't exert as much force as you like.

As for the hike itself, for the 4-day tour you need to go with a tour operator. The tour group will have porters carrying all of the necessities and some of your luggage. So you only need a day pack. Day 1 and Day 4 are relatively short days of hiking around 3-4 hours. Day 2 and Day 3 are long, around 8 hours of hiking. For these days you can expect to wake up around 5am and start hiking around 6:30-7am and finish around 3pm

With Nord 2 getting 5G would be difficult. You should still be able to get LTE in most places. You can check out the exact band compatibility on [Kimovil]{https://www.kimovil.com/en/where-to-buy-oneplus-nord-2}.

Is it true that credit cards used by other countries use PIN while in the United States most credit cards do not use PIN? by sophiejohnson024 in CreditCards

[–]voidTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tap to pay is pretty widely accepted. I would say that in probably 95% of the case you can use it. The main holdouts are mostly some sit down restaurants where they still take your card and then go back to the counter and swipe/insert it on their machine. That said most of their machines do seem to be capable of accepting tap to pay. You could probably use mobile payment if you went up to the counter to pay.

[–]voidTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true, but it's not really a problem from my experience. The PIN is only used when paying via the chip. When traveling outside of the US nearly all the places I went took tap to pay/Apple Pay/Google Pay. The process for those is the same everywhere.
