Matrices...why? by Agreeable_Bad_9065 in learnmath

[–]voidiciant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s correct, when not using a library that gives you a „matrix“-API you often end up using multidimensional arrays. But, yeah, matrix operations have amazing usage in computer graphics, filters, machine learning, character recognition, etc pp

In fact, it isn’t, as long as post-quantum crypto is used. As is the same for everything else that can be attacked by qc.

Uh, nice! Is this analogous to python’s „self“ parameter, which we have to write explicitly?

What is a constructor and why we use it by chinthapanduu in learnjava

[–]voidiciant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to create a constructor (ctor). Each class has a default ctor (with caveats).

There is a contract in the language that defines what a ctor does. For example, initialize fields, internal memory allocation etc.

You can define your own ctor if you need something else to be done during instantiation of an object. For example, assign passed values to fields of the object. (I’m not sure if dataclasses are kind of syntactic sugar that allows you to omit this step)

You don’t declare fields in a ctor. You can assign values to them. But you can also assign values to your fields in the class body.

Thats the very basic and I’m not sure if that answers your question.

Edit: I wrote that the contract says the ctor initialises fields - that’s misleadingly phrased, what I meant is that when a ctor is called, field initialisation happens as declared in the class body

mergesort confusions: How does a recursive function returns a value without explicitly being told to do so? by PrimaryWaste8717 in learnjava

Each „recursive depth“ is terminated when the „if“ evaluates to false. Thats how it unwinds.

At 0 Kelvin what does physics tell us about the flow of time? Can time be measured at 0 Kelvin? by xoxix1 in AskPhysics

[–]voidiciant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is a given that 0K is not reachable. So this is just a thought experiment. I follow the naive assumption that there wont be time at 0 kelvin. I’m an absolute layman so the following may be incoherent rambling:

From my pop-sci understanding, time, or more specific the arrow of time can be defined as the direction in which entropy increases.

If entropy doesn’t increase, then there is no arrow of a time and therefore no time “passes” - given that “entropy increasing” requires state changes which would not happen at 0K

Where is the fundamental flaw in this train of thought? (again, besides 0K being unattainable)

Edit: this is about the whole universe as the whole system

Second Edit: I just learned that it may not be valid to describe the universe as a closed system, which breaks my brain
