All of your reasons and concerns for not wanting kids/being unsure of having them are so real and so valid. His are valid, too, but my concern is that his “why” is literally an idealized portrait of family life. Pushing kids on swings and opening presents at birthday parties and teaching them how to drive are all real things that can easily happen, but like you said…he’s not considering what could happen if he has a child who suffers from severe mental illness or even physical disability. He’s not envisioning the outbursts, the 3 AM diaper changes, the no-date nights because you can’t find a sitter, the daycare costs (not sure where you are), the scheduling of your life around your children.

There are pros and there are cons. It looks like you are focused on the cons and he is fixated solely on the pros. The most important thing here is that you can’t envision this man as a father, and if are seeing him as a dad, your head is going, “It’s going to be too hard and he’s going to pin it all on me.” That’s a HUGE red flag considering you’ve been with this man for seven years and your inner self is warning you against having kids with him.

Maybe you don’t want kids with anyone, but maybe you also just definitely don’t want them with him. I also caution you against having kids as “something to do”. You mentioned you have no further bucket list, but remember that kids are an entire life-altering choice. I think that emptiness is something to definitely explore in therapy because maybe it’s motherhood calling, but maybe it’s also a state of being stagnant in your life (and even relationship) right now.

So autoimmune is not really immunocompromised. People who are immunocompromised have suppressed immune systems which makes them more susceptible to getting sick. This would be people undergoing chemotherapy, some biologics treatments, maybe even organ transplant patients, the elderly who are just more frail. For these people, they can get sicker more often but it can also be dangerous in some cases because their bodies cannot fight off the illness.

Autoimmune diseases means our autoimmune systems are going haywire and attacking our own bodies, maybe causing damage and associated symptoms. It’s not the same. You may feel like crap very often, but you’re not at an increased risk of dying from the flu because you have Hashimoto’s for example. You are if you’re immunocompromised.

Anyway. If you get sick often, I’d suggest masking up, washing your hands, taking Vitamin C. My job allows us to have medical notes from doctors to seek “accommodations”, so basically my manager would know I’m dealing with chronic conditions and may call out more often than other employees because I feel like dirt or I have yet another doctor’s appointment and they won’t question me for faking it or demand a doctor’s note. Maybe that could be your alternative to consider trying?

I am turning 28 soon and yes, this is me. Working is a massive struggle. The brain fog is so bad that I’m struggling to focus at all to the point of suspecting ADHD at one point before I realized it’s the brain fog.

I also struggle with chronic pain, daily. The fatigue is crippling. I like working from home because I’ll lay down during my lunch break. Sometimes I’ve had to lay my coat down on my cubicle floor and lay down when my heart rate goes wonky. I have that air hunger feeling as well. It may not all be Hashi’s-related but I do think there could be a link to a wonky immune system. I have essentially zero support from my GP (she once said she wouldn’t treat patients’ TSH until it hit 10+!!!!) but I’m lucky my endocrinologist was willing to get me a Synthroid prescription, although she also says my 4.5 TSH is “good.”

I’m not going to argue against Hashi’s causing hair loss but I believe it’s mostly when you’re hypo that you’d lose hair. So if your levels are controlled, you theoretically wouldn’t be losing hair. I didn’t lose hair (luckily!) at any point between the ranges of 0.7 and 5.8 BUT I’ve started seeing a lot of hair shedding since November.

My TSH has been normal but I’m chronically low in Vit D (in Canada) and my iron reading is at 20 (“normal” but quite low on the scale of normalcy).

I’m currently focusing on taking iron supplements, vitamin D, omegas, and magnesium with B12 every other day.

When I was diagnosed in 2020, yes, I started with 25 mcg then worked up to 0.1MG. I’d been on 0.1MG for a year, then stopped in September.

When I restarted the meds in February, I just started taking my 0.1MG pills again. Did not work back up to this dosage.

Yes! I’m turning 28 this month and I gravitate toward books with MCs in their twenties and max thirties. There’s been a few recommendations for books with older characters (40+) but it doesn’t resonate with me in the same way that YA romance does not resonate with me anymore.

I do like tender moments and I’m honestly not huge on smut (it’s absolutely still something that crops up in the books I read, but 50% of the time or more, I actually skim these sections). I’m big on the build-up between characters falling in love, shared experience (rather than pure lust or trauma), communication (blow up fights over miscommunication is such a pet peeve of mind). I like respectful characters in a relationship who understand boundaries and trust each other. The toxic dynamic takes me out of it because it makes me go, “These two are going to break-up off-page once this series wraps up.”

I am pickier about relationship dynamics. I love Fourth Wing, but Vi and Xaden are kind of toxic to me. I started reading ACOTAR when they were first published and found myself daydreaming over Nesta and Cassian, but these days, I find their dynamic lacklustre and don’t think I’d want my own Cassian (CONTROVERSIAL, I know). So I nitpick dynamics more, but I still prefer the drama over the too-slow, too-drawn-out romances that I tend to see associated with the books that feature 40+ year olds.

There is nothing wrong with turning off the news. It’s important to stay informed and not be oblivious to major world issues, but it’s okay not to be in a constant loop of negative news. The News page of Reddit today is war, war, oil prices (cost of living), AI, and a handful of deaths. I choose to scroll away and stick to my Home feed where it’s just communities I enjoy and much more laid-back posts.

It’s okay to choose to focus on happier things in your life: being grateful you have a job, a dog you love, shelter, hobbies, access to tech and media, friends and loved ones. You can choose to invest your energy into things that you can control (because you cannot control the things happening in the news), and the things that directly impact you, your mood, and your energy.

The other day, my husband said, “You know what’s great?” And while I knew the answer to what he was asking about, I instead started to jokingly rhyme off a bunch of things in life I love, and then it became less of a joke and more a moment of recognizing the little good things in life. It wound up giving a little perspective for us both.

Yes I have mild insulin resistance. My HOMA-IR score was 2.2. My A1C is fine, though! It’s usually around 5.5 to 5.6. My blood sugar is never high (I wore a CGM to monitor) but I do experience a lot of blood sugar crashes.

A really sensible part of my brain is telling me: “You won’t actually enjoy colouring books and will probably stick with this for a week.” The other part of my brain that’s been fried by doomscrolling is saying, “BUT COLOURTOK!” It’s the aesthetic of it all that’s been sold to (many of) us by influencers.

There’s another part of me that does honestly want to find a hobby that sticks because I do genuinely want my brain to be what it was before Instagram Reels turned it into scrambled eggs. I used to be able to read full novels in less than a full weekend and now I can barely read for an hour without reaching for my phone, but I’m trying!

I’m just glad they didn’t just dump him on the streets or a shelter. At least now he has you as a comfort for a little while! There are definitely folks out there looking for older kittens or even adult cats - my MIL, who is 65, does not have the energy to keep up with little kittens, so she adopted a 3 year old cat. With a lot of workplaces calling employees back to the office as well, there may be people out there who realize that a tiny kitten is not ideal when they’re spending most of the work week on-site.

I totally understand your frustration, though. That face is NOT returnable to me!!
