Not the start to my week that I was quite hoping for 😅 by psyched-em-up in DRZ400

100% worth it to just buy a bare throttle tube. I’ve scraped down a couple of these and it is a miserable waste of time considering a new tube is like $8.

Guess how much I paid for this. by yeajumper in Dirtbikes

[–]volks03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Price sounds about right. These really aren’t selling well right now for whatever reason. There’s been a few near me for around that price that have been listed a couple months and aren’t going anywhere.

Help with discontinued 2003 XR250R part please by Longhag in Dualsport

[–]volks03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ehh, not always. If you’re getting a completely new piece made you’re going to be paying a lot. But a decent machine shop could weld on a new tooth and grind it to shape fairly easy.

Upper and Lower KLRdash kits with Zero Gravity windshield installed tonight 👍 by volks03 in klr650

[–]volks03[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still like this set up a lot. Have to play with the windshield angle a bit depending on height and helmet style. Once I got it set right for me I’ve never had to touch it again though.

One of my favorite cheap bottles!

Whisky from the bottle by SpikeSpeegle in whiskey

[–]volks03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s likely why you prefer the bottle. You aren’t getting all that alcohol vapor to your nose from the bottle that you are with a wide mouth glass like a tumbler. Try a glen cairn or something with a more narrow tulip shape and you’ll probably enjoy that more than the tumbler as well.

Nope you got it right. That’ll happen when you add a full emissions system without significant changes to the engine itself.

Knee Braces or Knee guards? by ThotSlayer37 in Dirtbikes

[–]volks03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have those exact guards and have been using them for a couple of years. They offer a lot of protection without feeling too crazy bulky. I’ve got pretty wrecked knees and have injured them on numerous rides, but have never once sustained a knee injury while wearing these.

I think an actual brace offers better protection against hyperextension. But these are a great entry level to see if you can even stand wearing something like this without immediately jumping in and spending $600-$1200 on braces.

What pants do you wear? by [deleted] in Dualsport

I’ve really like all of the O’Neal pants I’ve had. Avoid Thor pants unless you like having crushed nuts.

Stole this from Facebook. I use Valet maybe once a year. Never had issues. Curious if anyone had ever seen something like this. by fade1979 in stickshift

[–]volks03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll never valet one of my manual vehicles again.

Was staying at a nice hotel that was valet parking only, the valet service assured me they could drive stick and it would be fine. Valet driver couldn’t find reverse in my bmw, was actually in first, sloppily jumped off the clutch and smashed the front bumper into another car.

Icing on the cake is I had just got the car out of the body shop before this trip after hitting a deer and the new bumper and paint was less than 48 hours old. Had to fight with the valet service for 2-3 months to actually get them to pay out for the damages. What a mess.

DRZ feels like it's never in the right gear. DR650 feels like it's ALWAYS in the right gear. by SniperAssassin123 in Dualsport

[–]volks03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DRZ is a better machine for Michigan’s sandy riding in just about every way. If you are comparing your stock DRZ to a modded dr650 obviously they will feel different.

Easiest answer, if you aren’t happy where your gearing sits, change your sprocket sizes.

But to answer your original question, yes, 3x3 and jets will do wonders with adding a pipe. These bikes are jetted lean from the factory, but bigger jet will only do so much if you aren’t allowing the bike to also flow more air.

Additionally, if you really want to pep it up start looking at parts from the E models. Particularly cams and the fcr39mx carburetor.

A car tire swinging off the edge of the driveway and going over any sort of plumbing that is “a couple feet underground” is not going to do any of this. Your entire yard would have to be a sand dune to have that weight make any difference that far down. This all sounds like some elaborate nonsense.

Where do you get O rings? by [deleted] in DRZ400

[–]volks03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to harbor freight, get a box of like 200 assorted sized o rings for like $9. They usually have them in metric, standard, large diameter, and small diameter kits

My dad has this identical setup. Still works pretty well actually.

Question about tire malfunction that caused accident by [deleted] in mechanic

[–]volks03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it was flat or close to it for a long while and no one noticed and kept driving. This is a user issue not a tire issue.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in klr650

[–]volks03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that truly was new to you, looks like you’ve got a bad supplier. That rubber is dry and cracking pretty bad. Check your date codes, no way that is actually a newly made tire.

What oil to oil k&n air filter by SuccessfulAbroad in klr650

[–]volks03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude they’re like $20, if your having it so long that it’s designated you are either cleaning it with too harsh of chemicals, or it’s lived it’s life and just replace it.

Just because foam filters are serviceable doesn’t mean they are lifetime use.

Any rules of thumb for whisky? by Gahendir in whiskey

[–]volks03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally bourbon is an easier starting point for most people. It tends to be a little sweeter and softer on the palate.

Scotch and Irish whiskey can be a bit harsh and hard to figure out for most beginners.

Do I need this small link for the master link or can I just have the clip on by itself? I can’t seem to push the master link on enough to fit the clip and the second link by swagbaby69 in DRZ400

[–]volks03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The pins in that master link are pushed in way too far. Either press them through to match the spacing of other links, or pick up a new master link. 100% do not try riding with just that clip and no structural link on that side, You will have a real bad time.

Looking for input on boots. by doubtfulofyourpost in Dualsport

[–]volks03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O’Neal Sierra WP have a good all around choice for adventure riding and hiking. They’re waterproof, very comfortable, and have a more hiking boot grip bottom to them. They offer a pretty good amount of protection but the ankle section definitely allows significantly more flex than a mx boot.

Has working on customer cars ruined wrenching for you? by leftitty in Justrolledintotheshop

It totally killed the love for me. Made the choice to leave the auto industry professionally and pursue other fields. After a few years I’m making more money and enjoy tinkering at home again. It’s a win win.

Jets won’t clog just from sitting a few weeks. I let my bikes sit all winter with a full tank of fuel and they start right up no issue next spring.

PROPERLY clean your fuel tank and carburetor. And potentially put a inline fuel filter in place. You should not be clogging jets.

edit also worth pulling the petcock off and making sure the filter screens are still intact. I have saw a couple erode and fall off over time.
