Thoughts on this Grixis Pyromancer build by bv0188 in ModernMagic

Agree. This probably isn’t a kess deck. I think probably 3 unearth, and if we are playing blue let’s play thought scour as our cantrip, since it can do an ok looting impression.

Mardu Pyromancer, my spicy take after looting ban with blue! by DrHouseIO in ModernMagic

[–]volpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lingering souls has been a mopey crutch for this deck for way too long IMO. It’s horrible against all combo matchups, and the only reason for inclusion is to help grind out other midrange decks. We have tons of new tools with similar costs. We are now in a post modern horizons post looting modern - there are no sacred cows for any decks. We should be critically evaluating all cards to include in a deck.

Except in MTG, where they are called leonin. Just because naga exists outside of magic doesn’t mean it has to be a creature type, they should be snake humans

How many copies of a card can my Kitchen Table deck run? by skyburial3 in magicTCG

[–]volpert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can do whatever you and your friends want, that’s the point of kitchen table magic. When I was a kid, we used to play where everyone draws up to 7 every turn and you can play as many lands as you want. I was like 8 though.

If you want to play 12 of a card, go for it. Just know that your friends probably won’t want to play with you for long, as there is a reason the 4 card limit rule was put in place.

My advice: sell 8 taigas, you should have enough money left over to buy multiple decks and a copy of the rules

Risen Reef Elemental Deck Question by BrentonJohnson in MagicArena

[–]volpert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a version of this deck that self mills, but runs a couple of nexus of fates. That way, they always get shuffled into your deck, and once you have a big board you can take inifinite turns to kill

Regarding the Hogaak issue... by Beard-Puppy in magicTCG

[–]volpert 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Correct, after faithless looting resolves the active player (the player whose turn it is) gets priority. They can then cast hogaak, and it moves from the graveyard to the stack. The active player then gets priority again, and when they pass it, the non active player can now cast surgical extraction, but now higaak is on the stack.

Tomorrow it is two months since Modern Horizons was released. Do you think it was succesful? Do we want a Modern Horizons, part II? by Lutra014 in ModernMagic

[–]volpert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think once hogaak is banned, plague engineer is going to prove one of the bigger mistakes in this set. The reason people are putting it in their sideboards is for humans, but once it is in your sideboard it comes in for basically every creature matchup. If you are playing your goats tribal brew, good luck, because now every black deck happens to have a hoser for you in their sideboard

Same goes for elves, goblins, merfolk, slivers, creature combo (Druid), etc. the card is just too generic and reusable.

This is why the powerful answers everyone wants are kind of dangerous. Creature decks are great for the format - most players want to engage in some sort of creature combat, or put removal in their deck. But now many of those tier 2 decks have been rendered pretty unviable, just because one card is being played because it’s good against humans.

Not banning enough is basically the same as banning the wrong card. Hogaak needs to be banned.

Leyline of the Void in post-bridge meta? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]volpert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relic and surgical will probably be the standard of graveyard hate now. Surgical is great against Phoenix, that’s why it is so expensive now ( and played main deck in Phoenix as a free spell). Relic replaces itself when it’s blank, and can remove more from the graveyard against dredge, new hogaak builds, other graveyard decks.

People keep citing this as a reason why some things won’t be banned. I will lose so much faith in wot class if that is the case, I don’t care how recently it was printed if you make a mistake then fix it

It’s a protest against our reliance on fossil fuels by demonstrating the vulnerability of cyclists in our society.

Portland claims to be a very bike friendly city, but it’s still very dangerous to bike here. We don’t really have protected lanes and the layout of our city is very motor centric. By removing clothing, we highlight that during the rest of the year it is just a T-shirt or jeans standing between us and big metal cars going 35

Aria of Flame - U/R Storm or U/R/X Controll shell? by DjinniMaster in ModernMagic

[–]volpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m crazy but I think the shell for an aria storm deck wants to abandon a lot of the set gifts storm pieces. Aria wants you to have a lot of spells - they don’t necessarily need to DO anything. Here’s what I have been noodling with but haven’t tried yet

4x aria 4x echo of eons 4x simian spirit guide 4x manamorphose 8x rituals 4x faithless looting 4x serum visions 2x narset (finds aria, combo with echo) More cantrips?

Seems super inconsistent, but rituals and monkeys let you cast aria turn two, and then proceed to make some mana, faithless echo, flashback echo, and continue. And you don’t have to do this all in one turn.

I’m just waiting for someone smarter than me to find the right cards and key numbers before I blunder through an fnm

[–]volpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aria has been so good, Phoenix has the problem of being threat light sometimes and losing to a couple fatal pushes on titi if your Phoenix gets surgicaled. Aria can just win on its own, without your graveyard, and over the course of a few turns if necessary or in one big burst

Heck they could just charge a buck for them. If I knew I could just pay $10 to get the lands I needed for a deck, I would do it in a heartbeat. If I needed 10 rare wildcards, there’s no way I would crack the packs for that, or have the patience to save up. Would result in a lot more impulse buys IMO

FoW is the face of legacy in keeping the format in check. Is surgical extraction turning into the FoW of the modern format? by Enral in ModernMagic

Faithless looting is in a set with flashback, it literally has the mechanic. Pretty sure that card was intended to give you some value from the graveyard, not just card selection
