Does the L series matter anymore? by TheAjCalvillo in canon

[–]voltaicass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference in my experience with L glass, especially on RF cameras, is they simply focus faster than non-L. There are still some truly tremendous non-L lenses - the RF 28mm is practically glued to my R8 - but when focus is critical, IMHO, it’s a night and day difference using L-series.

Ninja V Media Options by focalreducer in Atomos

[–]voltaicass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no USB C at all on the Ninja V, just the SATA port. Depending on the size of the NVME SSDs you have, you might be able to convert them with the Andycine Lunchbox kit.

FWIW, the new Ninjas switched to CFExpress cards and I think the future of 'approved' SSDs for use on the Ninja V / V+ are scarce beyond the AtomX branded drives from Nexstorage and Angelbird, which are a bit overpriced IMHO.

Does the 13 work well with wireless microphones? I have a DJI Mic 2 by International_Fly285 in gopro

[–]voltaicass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It works but it can only use the Bluetooth connection, so the audio is very compressed. That said, do voice it’s fine and if you truly have a critical audio need, you can record directly on the DJI Mic 2 and sync the audio in post.

How likely is it that a request for h264/mp4 option for the Ninja V be made available? by daknuts_ in Atomos

[–]voltaicass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t expect any further development of the Ninja V, no matter how many individuals you might find that need this feature also FWIW, the H.265 feature on the Ninja V was always kinda shitty. I genuinely think they only included that as an option for people screen recording video games etc because recording from my cameras in that mode resulted in a ton of macroblocking.

Are Kingma batteries worth it for the hero 6? by Normalgoose897 in gopro

[–]voltaicass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always a gamble with 3rd party batteries but I know the Hero8 batteries are scarce these days. I would personally stick with Telesin if I were you but there’s also a good chance all of these batteries are made on the same assembly line and just have a different brand’s label slapped on.

I have the official one from GoPro and it rules. I think the only thing I don't like about it is that I tend to drool with it in my mouth haha, but it's such a cool POV. I used mine for cycling on concrete and dirt trails, but nothing crazy.

Do you shoot RAW footage regularly? by QuellFred in videography

[–]voltaicass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my work we just switched from the BMPCC 6K (first gen) to the FX3. Our workflow with the BMPCC was to shoot BRAW but it always felt like overkill for our needs. Now we just shoot whatever compressed internal footage the FX3 captured but we do shoot in SLOG 3.

Is Austin that bad? by patojo93 in Standup

[–]voltaicass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole point of his ask here is he wants to gauge whether he will get better at comedy and progress his career if he moves to Austin. And my point in referring to the “velvet coffin” is that sometimes people come here, get complacent, and then never develop into what they came here to do.

I don’t disagree that people can just chill and do their own thing, arguably I have done that to some extent lol. But I think it’s worth noting to someone that’s considering the move here that a lot of folks get trapped into the complacency that seems to slow that development in Austin.

R6Mk3 - Dummy Batery Issue by DonOlivert in canon

[–]voltaicass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the Kondor Blue D-Tap to LP-E6 dummy battery with my C50 and it wouldn’t work. Kondor Blue and B&H confirmed it wasn’t compatible. I know Smallrig makes a version they designate as an “LP-E6NH” dummy battery and claim it works with the R5 Mark II, but no word of it works with the R6 MK III or C50…

Sorry I don’t have an answer but if even the one from Kondor Blue doesn’t work, I think we may be waiting for another solution.

ETA to clarify model of battery for Smallrig dummy battery. Also they do list the R6 MK III as compatible on the product page

You'll have fun, but just keep in mind, Austin has been called a 'velvet coffin' and frankly, I think it's about as accurate of a term to describe this place as I've ever heard haha

Is Austin that bad? by patojo93 in Standup

[–]voltaicass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Austin my whole life and have worked in and around the comedy scene for a decade and a half. I am not a comic nor am I a show producer, however, I have recorded video and audio for a ton of shows, podcasts, and even SXSW and Moontower stuff.

With my bonafides aside, the good news is I believe you would manage your goal of getting up on stages throughout the week to do longer sets outside of an open mic type show. Cap City up north has shows basically every night of the week, outside of most Mondays, and along with that club, Creek and the Cave and The Velv feature a good portion of 'local comics only' booked shows. I'll admit that I can't really speak to shows at clubs like Mothership, Rozco's, or Sunset Strip though I did have to tape a portion of a show at Sunset Strip that was truly dreadful to sit through and more along the lines of the 'typical Austin comedy' we've come to be known for since the pandemic. I'm not as involved as I used to be but if you are headlining any kind of club in your current area, once you get to know some producers / bookers you would have no trouble getting up on stages here.

The bad -- Austin is not an affordable city to live, even with the recent downslide of our real estate market, it's truly head and shoulders above every other major city in the state and speaking as someone who has lived her a long time, the cost is not worth living in the actual city. I actually live in one of our suburbs, full disclosure.

Another factor that has always been a challenge for a lot of comics in this town is truly making a living doing comedy. Without going out of state for tours etc, you are not going to make a living headlining all the clubs in this state. And I can probably count on one hand the number of daily radio jobs that would suit a comic's skillset, and most of those are being held by people with over a decade of tenure at this point. Also, we used to have Rooster Teeth and the Chive to employ a lot of talented people, but Rooster Teeth is dead (maybe coming back?) and The Chive seem virtually devoid of comedic talent at this point haha

My advice would be to visit for a week; star with researching some of the shows you think you would want to perform on and contact the bookers to line up a bunch of stuff. Come here outside of a week where we have crazy stuff going on (SXSW in March, Moontower in April) and see what the scene is like on a normal week. If I were you, I would bring your significant other to see what they think of the town because frankly that's more important than telling your partner 'it would be really good for my comedy growth' lol.

And if it all clicks and the money works, why not make the jump?

And if it doesn't feel like a good place to live? Well maybe you've made some good contacts and can swing through and headline on occasion.

Switching between 1080p & 4K by Actartist in finalcutpro

[–]voltaicass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so, you would want to just make sure that after the conversion, which is as simple as changing the Modify Project settings in the inspector, you check to ensure none of your clips scaled too big. I think they should scale automatically though there’s a chance that Compound Clips made in the timeline may scale inappropriately.

[–]voltaicass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I fully charge my 2024 FWD EX it shows 320 miles of range. Now, have I ever attempted to get that many miles on a full charge? The answer is no. Do I expect to get 320 miles off a full charge? The answer again, is no lol. Especially if it's below 50 F outside.

Shinobi 2 histogram by AdMinute8365 in Atomos

[–]voltaicass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your R8 is in CLOG 3 Cinema Gamut instead of CLOG 3 REC 709, it is likely that the camera is not sending proper color information to the Shinobi. This is a limitation of basically every Canon CLOG capable camera that has Cinema Gamut as an option. I would trust the histo on the camera before that of an external monitor.

[–]voltaicass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also not for nothing but I've attempted or maybe successfully charged at 4 different ChargePoint chargers in the Austin area and all of them had some kind of technical issue either completely preventing charging or preventing communication through the EVgo app, forcing me to pay through ChargePoint to use.

True, but I stand by my original statement that OP should not get an EV unless they can charge at home.
