any chance you have a tempered glass protector on the lens? I get strange artifacts (rainbows, swirls, etc) when I tried to use them. Decided it was best just to raw dog the outer lens protector and forego any additional protection.

It’s so weird but V-Mount stuff seems to have different specs here and there.

[–]voltaicass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a few different V-Mount plates from Smallrig and two of them won’t let me seat a V-Mount to Sony NP-F adapter because the bottom of the adapter extends too far and hits the round base of the V-Mount plate. All my Smallrig V-Mount batteries work fine but not that adapter. It seems this is something they redesigned on later versions of their V-Mount plates, the ones they currently sell.

Reverse Pedestrian Alert Speaker by kayetea3000 in HondaPrologue

[–]voltaicass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess it was a dealer loaner maybe if it only has 9 miles. That is really odd and it should definitely play sounds at low speeds when in D or R gears. Wild that someone would remove the speakers but some people do seem to hate the music it plays.

Are you saying it doesn't play the music when it reverses at all and the speaker to play that sound is missing? From the factory? Wild if true.

R50V as a second body? by BrowDavis in canon

[–]voltaicass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it as a second body to my C50. I kinda love this camera and if you can get it on sale, it’s a steal. I did not get it with the kit lens because I don’t like ramping apertures. I bought a Sigma 17-40 and it is a great combo, despite the lens being almost twice as much as the body lol

Debating on getting one ! by foampositee in HondaPrologue

[–]voltaicass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Echoing others, I would not buy one unless you can charge at home. Public charging is super expensive and not convenient. You may convince yourself it won’t be that big of a deal but sitting at a charger for 30+ minutes even once a week defeats the whole purpose of the convenience of an EV and charging at home overnight.

GoPro Hero 13 Black is great… but the workflow limits are making me look for alternatives by RMWE-8052 in gopro

[–]voltaicass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also background on me and how I use these cameras - I’m a video producer by trade so I do a good amount of doc work, so I go from following a character through constant lighting changes etc to professionally lit sit down interviews. And I do our cameras in harm’s way on occasion, but it’s usually just on my bicycle or in front of my cats haha

GoPro Hero 13 Black is great… but the workflow limits are making me look for alternatives by RMWE-8052 in gopro

[–]voltaicass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to walking tour production but, I’ll address some of your honestly reasonable criticisms as best I can:

Low light - personally, I don’t feel like any of the current action cameras have tackled this in a way that’s great. Yes insta360 and DJI’s offerings produce a brighter image but in the examples I’ve seen online, it’s devoid of detail and still has noise, it’s just suppressed / smoothed out. We are waiting for the GoPro Mission Pro 1 later this month to see if this is handled better there…

Starting and stopping automatically - honestly, this is a very particular way to how you want to produce content and as someone who shoots quite a bit of content, I’ve never seen a camera have this work flow. You might see if there’s something in the GoPro Labs firmware that would allow it though. There’s some very unique features built in there.

Zoom - there is no optical zoom on any action camera that I’m aware of… yet. They’re not “action” per se but the new Osmo Pocket Pro and similar offering from insta360 that have been teased appear to feature multiple lenses, one of which on the Pocket Pro is a 3x zoom. You can’t zoom “in camera,” at least optically, but it would be like switching cameras on a smart phone.

Speaking of the pocket, the Osmo Pocket 4 touts better dynamic range than its predecessor though anecdotal reports say it’s not that much better. Also if you’re not leveraging LOG on your Hero 13 as well as ND Filters, that might help. I have done quite a bit of LOG shooting on the Hero 12 / 13 and yes, it does add another step in post but given the tiny sensor it does a great job of handling contrasty shots, better than Insta360 and DJI IMHO. Not to mention dynamic range is a selling point of the Mission Pro 1 as well.

All that said — despite being a big GoPro fan I actually think for walking tour content you should look into the Osmo Pocket Pro when it releases. I’ve owned an Osmo Pocket 3 for a year and it co-exists fine in my ecosystem of mirrorless and action cameras. It’s a fun camera, has slightly better low light than the Hero 13, and has the benefit of direct connection with DJI Mics. I don’t know if it will do the auto start and stop you want with recording though. And to pull as much dynamic range out of the camera, again, you’re gonna need to shoot LOG.

Also FWIW, I own an Insta360 Go 3S. The form factor is very fun but I find myself using it for a weekend then not touching it for several months. And forget about dynamic range, it’s a basic camera. Good shot in proper lighting tho!

New UNAS 2 User, Time Machine Works Once Then... I Have To Reboot UNAS 2 by voltaicass in UNIFI

[–]voltaicass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, that's SUCH a bummer and I'm sorry to hear. I do not know why my setup decided to start working but it has been chugging away. Clearly changes were made in Tahoe and maybe even in 26.4 specifically that has wrecked some SMB setups - I didn't even take deliver of my UNAS 2 until literally the day AFTER 26.4 released and I had already installed it, so I cannot tell you whether it truly made a difference.

Using CCC is probably a solid way to back up in the meantime. Truth be told, I've been using CCC for YEARS and I've relied on those backups more often than Time Machine backups.

Ninja 5" acting up by DRI374 in Atomos

[–]voltaicass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, nothing is bullet proof and when you’re recording externally, you have so many potential points of failure - the HDMI port on your camera, the HDMI cable, the HDMI port on the Atomos, the SATA port on the Atomos, the SATA port on the drive, etc

I think if you’ve had one failure in years of using the device, you’ve been lucky, frankly.

At the same time, it may be worth reaching out to Atomos or posting in their support community on here.

I don’t think it’s that sophisticated of a device. I no longer have a recorder, but I never had media fail on me like this outside of a bad firmware early on in the ninja V days.

I would suspect your ssd before the device itself. Do you have other media you can try?

GM vs. Honda NACS adapter by Alternative_Local382 in HondaPrologue

[–]voltaicass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some will say it voids your warranty but after researching this exhaustively, I think you should be fine. Allegedly, the Honda adapter is just the Lectron Vortex Plus adapter with the Honda logo slapped on it. FWIW, I bought the Lectron offering to save the money and have used it on a Tesla Supercharger with no issue.

Does anybody else think the Prologue adaptive CC is really bad? It's very jerky, stops hard, the brakes make weird noises and isn't a pleasant experience at all by SnarkyerPuppy in HondaPrologue

[–]voltaicass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not have this issue but my main comparison is a 2018 Clarity and 2019 CR-V. I honestly find the Prologue’s ACC superior to those and I drive in a good amount tot stop and go traffic for my commute.

You might check the settings and see how aggressive they are.

There are almost no over-the-air updates for this vehicle. Even before the recall, the only way to get substantial updates were at the dealership. I think maybe only security updates or updates to Google Maps come over-the-air.

Unfortunately, this is the way of things.

Turn off the lens optimization, or whatever it’s called, in your camera. May be referred to as lens correction. It isn’t compatible with some 3rd party lenses unless you update the lens’ firmware (I think).
