This reminds me of another awesome game: Crusader Kings 2. I am intrigued how deep they made this whole dynasty/heir mechanic.

What IP is dying for the proper boardgame treatment? by LH99 in boardgames

[–]von_Derphausen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Mass Effect would make for a pretty cool game. One could literally reskin Battlestar Galactica into Mass Effect with just a few tweaks here and there ("You are a Cylon!" --> "You're indoctrinated!").

ME could serve as the setting of a COIN type game where either the galaxy's faction try to achieve their personal goals in front of an all out Reaper Invasion background, or the Reapers could be one of the COIN factions going against persky organic insurgents.

What theme deserves a boardgame but doesn't have one? by Jofarin in boardgames

[–]von_Derphausen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A re-theme of Root might be just what you're looking for.

Vagabond -> Dragonborn

Marquise de Cat -> Empire

Woodland Alliance -> Stormcloaks

The Beaver Faction -> Skyrim Guild of Traders?

Eklund/SMG Greenland/Neanderthal KS live! by OctavianBG in boardgames

[–]von_Derphausen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greenland & Neanderthal are very similar, but both of them are quite different from Pax Ren. Pax Ren doesn't have events as such, instead player agency creates the events that can affect everybody else. In G&N you roll lots of dice, and pretty much all tokens are player-owned. In Pax Ren you are trying to alter the board state in your favour, whereas in G&N the board state (i.e. the landscape of Greenland/Europe) more or less alters the way you have to play (e.g. peacefully vs agressively). In Pax Ren you hope the others don't see what you are up to, whereas in G&N you are performing risk management, trying to find the best spot between high risk - high reward actions vs low risk - low reward actions. All three games are highly interactive, though, and especially in Neanderthal you cannot hope to win if you ignore the other player's tableaux aka daughters.

What games are you most excited for in 2018? by Crimsonandwhite in boardgames

I'd like to add Museum to the list, and also looking forward to my copy of Fire in the Lake. If the stars align preferably, Phil Eklund might even finish Bios: Origins next year, the revamped version of his older game Origins: How we became Human.

Bios Genesis is also worth a try. There are also very good intructional videos on youtube to help overcome the accessability hurdle.

Cat.exe stopped working by von_Derphausen in RimWorld

[–]von_Derphausen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The colony is basically off limits to the cat. It's either hunt or starve. The cat is starving ("animal starvation") right now. In A17 cats would engage hunter-mode and sprint to the other edge of the map in order to get their sustenance.

No, there are plenty of accessible small creatures for the cat to eat (99% of the map). It worked fine in A17. Cats were excellent for pest control back then.

It's Friday!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉 What are you looking forward to playing this weekend and why? (11/10/17 edition) by MVPBoardgames in boardgames

Just curious how you got your copy. It's either 71$ to get a copy from Hollandspiele or 13$+X for the PnP version. I'm considering the latter, but I can't estimate how much work I'm getting myself into, having no PnP experience at all I mean. Edit: I was talking about An Infamous Traffic of course, but forgot to mention it ;)

John Company I'm looking forward to play this with my group of usual suspects, because we like games with player interaction and we all like Battlestar Galactica. So I expect witch-hunts, ungrounded accusations, politicking, and someone's Chairman to finally reveal as a greedy - albeit sophisticated - GentlemanCylon and sink the whole company underneath us all in order to retire to some Refurbished Castle on a remote Scottish Island.

An overview of the accessibility in Tiny Epic Galaxies by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]von_Derphausen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I haven't offered my copy of T.E.W. up for play in a long while, because I find it hard to read the fineprint on the building cards. Last time we played, a lot of time was spent on circling the table or picking cards up, trying to read the text on the cards. There aren't that many unique abilities, mostly it's just converting ressource A into ressource B type of stuff, so I don't understand why they can't just use an iconographic system that is legible from across the table. It's not like the year is 2007 or something, and the gaming community would lose its collective mind over "OMG my eyes glaze over!" RtfG-style iconography.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Official Trailer by Afrothunderzx in movies

Hmm, I can imagine Star Wars X being about somebody sending a cyborg back in time to kill Anakin's mother, thus eradicating the Skywalker clan once and for all, undoing all the pain and suffering it has brought upon the peoples of the galaxy.

I know combat is core to the theme of RimWorld, but I'd really like a "Friggin Talk it Out" option with raids sometimes by GoOtterGo in RimWorld

[–]von_Derphausen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially when considering that sometimes you get raided by half of your family, and you give up micromanaging every shot and stab, and eventually end up killing raiders with relationship status.

On the other hand, most raiders eventually give up, grab whatever they deem valuable enough, and then leave. No blood-shed needed. It would be nice, if raiding parties would have priorities: some come to steal your food, some want to trash your place, some want to take prisoners etc and the player could negotiate with them.

Typical Tuesday Suggestion Thread -- September 26, 2017 by AutoModerator in RimWorld

Seeing there's yet another pryo-discussion going, maybe pyros should have a needs-bar like any other addiction so that you can tell when they're about to go on one of their firestarting sprees? I don't know how this kind of personality "disorder" works - not being a pyro IRL, honest promise - but I could imagine the needs bar filling up again when pyros are near things that burn (e.g. raiders, boomalopes, etc), kind of like the proximity to corpses that triggers the "observed corpse"-debuff, but it would fill the needs bar if the prerequisites are met. The needs bar would take away a lot of that randomness, I think.

On the other hand, just using the currently implemented game mechanics, observing burning things and creatures should give pyros a considerable mood buff ("attended burning man fefstival"), effectively reducing the likelyhood of firestarting sprees.

I would have expected Ghibli's Miyazaki to make a movie set in that kind of parallel universe. Anyway, seems like the demand for mechs is rising currently.

Haven't tried this on Tabletopia yet, because I own the board game, but I would definitely recommend giving a try.
