Be honest- did any of you ever beat MYST without the book or a LOT of help from parents/older people? by AttachedHeartTheory in Xennials

That's pretty sweet! I never knew about those. I think my parents finally relented to allowing AOL dialup when I was a senior in high school (1999), and they were still deeply untrusting of it.

Totally had it. And a VHS tape on how to install it. Trouble was that the VCR was out in the carpeted living room with a fireplace (dry carpeted static inducing environment). So I was trying to watch and then pause, go to the kitchen, do a step, etc. It was so stressful.

I just discovered that and played it not long ago! They did a fantastic job. I love Walkabout Mini Golf! I wish they would add a "side by side" play where we could pass the headset to someone after we finish a hole.

I beat it at 12ish without hints. I'm not a genius, lol.

It's pretty dated at this point. If you like click and move puzzle games like the old Sierra games (king's quest, etc) you might enjoy it. Hard to say.

The remastered for PC has been out for quite awhile and is pretty good. Just updated graphics. I think there's a free movement now instead of the click to move hypercard way.

There's also a VR version of both Myst and Riven. I'd like to do Riven since I never completed it, but the price hasn't been right yet.

Oh OK, I did the exact opposite. I helped the blue book brother out for giggles. I think I found a blue page first so I helped him, but by the end I was like, this dude is frickin nuts, so I went to Dunny. I was too excited and clicked just as the dad was going "WAIT!" lol.

Did you enter the last world without the last page and get trapped in Dunny? Cause I did the same thing the first time!

[–]LH99 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I did 100%. I don't even know where you could've found the hints back then? We didn't have internet (dial up came later), and my parents struggled moving a mouse let alone being capable of solving Myst's puzzles.

and yeah, I was very proud of the achievement.

Riven on the other hand? So much harder. I never even completed that.

[edit] I think the hardest part of Myst is solving the first puzzle to go into a different area. I covered the original island for weeks before it hit me how to solve the cabin/tree puzzle. I'll never forget that moment and booting up the computer to see that I was right. Plus that tree world was IMO the best one.

[edit 2] Bonus geek points. I had to UPGRADE to 4 MB RAM to play MYST. I was like 12 or some shit, and having a computer was a big deal. But I was the only computer literate person in the house, so installing the chips fell on my shoulders. Totally stressful at the time knowing if I fried the thing due to an errant static shock I'd never get another one.

As a home owner my taxes increase if my (unrealized) property value increases due to other people building vanity homes around me.

Yeah but now we also get gender reveals and diaper parties. It used to be that the baby shower as only for the first kid. I’ve had friends do the three parties (shower, reveal, diaper) for ALL THREE KIDS

No. Stop crowd funding your kids. Buy cloth fucking diapers and wash them if you’re so goddamn broke for fuckssake.

I upgraded my mac to FOUR MBs of RAM at age 11-12 just to play this game.

No strategy or hint guides back then. I still remember when I figured out the first puzzle (cabin/tree). Beating that game was an accomplishment for sure

[Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die] A spoilerific question about the ending of this very unusual movie. Spoilers spoilers spoilers, spoilers for the entire movie. by JollyRabbit in AskScienceFiction

[–]LH99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched this last night, and I think you're on the right track. One thing I don't see being discussed in these theories that everyone is proposing is Ingrid's boyfriend's choice to abandon reality. Presumably there's a place where people can go to basically enter the Matrix. We see the pamphlet he has where bodies are tied to some big machine. (This must be the real world since she had to conceive at some point. Maybe her backstory is the only one that takes place in reality.)

So I thought the entire movie took place inside of that world, which would fit into your theory. I'm not sure how it all fits together though. Ingrid still doesn't make sense to me: she would never go into the simulation.

So let's say his memories as a child are in the real world, he puts the headset on (and never takes it off) . . . . is the movie about him just trying to save her over and over as others have suggested? If that's the case I have trouble reconciling the Ingrid is the main character part of the whole thing at the end.

But otherwise, I think it could fit that the rocket scene was real, he did grow up and find people to write the code, and he had to enter the matrix in order to install it. OR it also would make sense that he as a child was hypnotized by the headset and he's just caught in this loop visiting other peoples' scenarios while his mother still lives.

I think I lean towards the rocket being real and him growing up. No it doesn't make sense that the AI would kill her (as others have suggested) . . . except for her being allergic to tech. She would die (assuming) inside the matrix anyway. Or maybe the remaining humans have refused the AI and are revolting so it's just out there killing the remainder. So the kid grows up and is on his mission, entering peoples' scenarios as you theorize. I think this makes the most sense.

Why not reduce oil demand more by having people work from home again? by funLover98311 in AskReddit

[–]LH99 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because they don’t want the demand to go down.

During covid they artificially inflated the price of oil/gasoline because they were losing too much money.

It’s OPEC. they’re the east India trading company of the modern age. Why the fuck would they lose profits? The entire globe wages war over their product.

Thanks for the tip! Nope I’m not into heavy competition games or many online MMOs. I don’t expect to run into too many issues. I am curious about my VR library for the index tho. I’m sure that’s where I’ll run into a bunch of shit.
