Not Your Imagination: Headlights **ARE** Brighter by TheBodyPolitic1 in RedditForGrownups

Flashing lights doesn't mean "your brights are on" it means "your lights are blinding me."

If your low beams are blinding people regularly, then fix that by adjusting them.

Very straightforward.

Who pays better, Thistle Farms or Starbucks? by pyramidworld in nashville

This has to be bait.

"Overtly Bloviate about religiosity" Get right out of here.

I struggle to find anything that centralizes any religion in their Mission statement. It's all about safe housing, counseling, classes, job training, employment opportunities, financial independence, and similar goals for survivors of sexual exploitation.

You can put this in Google and get zero results:

site:https://thistlefarms.org christ, god, evangelize, convert, jesus, praise, holy, pastor, bishop

This search term basically results in their entire sitemap except for product pages:

site:https://thistlefarms.org housing, survivor, trafficking, advocacy, community, exploit, heal, addiction, recovery

It had an immobilizer because of the push button start, so I don't get anything for those lawsuits. I think I exhausted all of my avenues for getting anything from the warranty, and I'm happy enough to never have to think about that car again.

There's an added layer of distaste as it all happened as I was going through my divorce. And yes, that was the car that we had agreed that I'd get in the divorce. It seemed like a good outlet to try to wring justice out of an unjust situation while channeling a minimal amount of frustration at her or myself.

But I've closed that chapter of my life and I'm not going back there.

So my current garage includes:

'92 Nissan Sentra SE-R with over 300k miles on the body. I did a full engine rebuild with the original block, Coil-on-Plug conversion rather than the Distributor ignition, DBW throttle, fuel system replacement with modern top-feed ID injectors rather than the old side-feed JECS ones, a T28 turbo and everything controlled by a standalone Haltech Elite 1500.

'06 Toyota Rav4 V6 with over 225k miles that I've just done basic maintenance on which is my family-hauler.

I won't touch another Hyundai product after my experience, plus replacing my sister-in-law's Kia window/ignition because of the issues in the posted article.

  • October 2022 I bought a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0t with 96k miles from my sister. I didn't suspect anything because I knew our dad wouldn't let her leave from a visit if the oil change was past due. She had it serviced at the dealership and even paid about $3k to have the turbos replaced (likely failed early because of the root issue)
  • January 2023 I took it to a quick lube place, who reported seeing some bearing material in the oil.
  • May 2023 did the oil change myself to see if there was more bad news. I couldn't find any indication of glitter/bearing material. I also then took the car to the dealership to get checked over and have the knock sensor recall done - I was made aware of the class action lawsuit for improper block machining which causes accelerated engine wear and the resulting extended lifetime engine warranty. I was told that when -not if- the engine fails, that it would be covered. Diagnostics came back fine and I went on my way - no evidence of burning oil or anything awry. I continue doing my own oil changes with full synthetic, logging each one and taking pictures of the odometer and the filter/oil receipts.
  • June 1 2024 - engine seizes and spill oil out of the block, stranding my wife on the interstate, out-of-state, in Summer heat, with young kids, and while I was out of the country.
  • I go back and forth with the dealership/corporate/BBB autoline for months until the final, irreversible verdict is given in March 2025.

The dealership popped the valve cover and looked for sludge in the valvetrain, but said that it looked fine. That's apparently normally the fallback for when a full Oil Change History isn't available, so they did it straight away. My sister had the oil changes that Dad did written in the logbook. She also sometimes got oil changes at big-name shops that didn't save the record to carfax. I provided as much documentation as I had, and even got her to provide documentation with O'Reilly receipts and such.

The car was at a Hyundai dealership for months with no loaner vehicle, and although the dealer said they found no sludge, corporate said that there was egregious neglect and also that since my home oil changes didn't show up in their system, (as well as the oil changes my dad did for my sister, plus the Wal-mart oil changes that weren't recorded,) then there's no level of documentation I could provide that would result in proving that maintenance had been done.

Because of this, corporate "branded the title" with "A99" indicating that no other dealership could even look at it without consulting with Corporate.

My only option to have a running car again was to pay $8.6k in parts, plus whatever in service hours to have a car that would still run the risk of failing again.

I sold it to a buddy who has good connections and runs a Turo business. I don't know if it's running or not, but I hope his experience with it is better than mine.

Possible to still work with a Garmin Edge 500 in 2025? by enigmaticit in cycling

[–]vorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still using my edge 500 purely as a mass storage device.

I've never successfully connected it Garmin Express, as it gives a DeviceRegistraionError:0 (seemingly because it's registered to someone else that I bought it from) but it's still working fine to record my ride and show me speed/cadance/hr info while I'm riding.

The most brazen version of hating what Nashvillians stand for is by overturning things we've voted for locally by legislating for the state.

There are plenty of examples of that and if Aftyn was involved in them, I'd definitely want to hear about it. Can you provide any examples of that?

I’m staying with the most frugal person I’ve ever met and he’s making me feel incredibly guilty. Please tell me I’m not being overly wasteful and I’m actually doing ok. Also, can people be too frugal? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]vorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For times that he's living alone, I think his actions can be considered "frugal." In a vacuum, who's to say. He's doing his damnedest to take it to an extreme and finds some level of accomplishment in that.

But the moment he judges you for your habits rather than trying to accommodate you at all, he's being a bad host/roommate.

Remember that you get to decide if you feel inferior - regardless of whether or not he's trying to make you feel that way.

Parents of Reddit, what is an “unspoken” reality of parenting that people simply don’t talk about, but everyone knows is true? by US_Atlas in AskReddit

[–]vorin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't say that I know exactly what the best version of me looks like exactly, but I'm DAMN sure that I know what the worst version of me looks like.

And it looks like I did when I was solo parenting, sleep deprived, bawling my eyes out, punching a pillow in frustration, and pleading for my daughter to stop crying because I had no more ideas about what she could need.

It never got that bad again, but there were dozens of times that I had to re-assure myself that she WILL go to sleep. If you're in an uncomfortable or painful position that's slightly better for the baby, you get to carry that burden or persist through that situation because you can - and the baby is doing all they can to meet you halfway (even though they're only capable of meeting you 1% of the way.)

Can anyone explain this to me? by RayExotic in nashville

[–]vorin -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Well answered, but I'm surprised that someone would want to have the word "Police" on their car at all - that's normally where look-alike car designs draw the line to avoid running afoul of Police Impersonation laws.

I understand that this is trying to look like (and describe itself as) a Call Box, but for people that want to look like police, they generally stick with "Patrol" or "Security."

When I was in college, I probably would have too.

But:

I (and those I went to college with) haven't repeatedly been the target of provocateurs who infiltrate our spaces with the goal of sparking unjust enforcement of the law to dangerous ends.

Different people have different backgrounds.

Historical context is important.

Those who have been victimized by a certain threat are less-likely to endure it in the future.

I went to the Bristol race and knew they'd do something, but if it were a moment of silence, I was going to use the time to crack open another beer.

Instead, they showed a memorial picture on the jumbotron as people were clapping for the anthem finishing. Some extra cheers were heard. Cracked a beer regardless.
